An essential collection for any admirer of Harold Pinter, this brand-new, updated edition of his own selection of his poems and prose includes three never-before-published pieces, the most recent of which he wrote in January 1995. Included are love poems, political diatribes, short stories, character portraits. Some are intimately connected with plays; others are intriguingly allusive, and all of them share Pinter's lean, taut, and sometimes jarringly original use of language. Katherine Burkman has said that "like Shakespeare, Pinter is a poet," and in this single volume we see that Harold Pinter is not only, as Irving Wardle has written in the London Times, "our best living playwright" but one of the most accomplished writers in the English language today.

This Reader's Guide synthesises the key criticism on Pinter's work over the last half century. Andrew Wyllie and Catherine Rees examine critical approaches and reactions to the major plays, charting the controversies which have arisen in response to Pinter's critiques of political and sexual issues. They consider criticism from the press and academics, on the themes of Absurdism, politics and gender identity. By placing this criticism in its historical context, this guide illustrates a transition from bewilderment and outrage to affection, fascination - and more outrage.

“One of the most essential artists produced by the twentieth century. Pinter’s work gets under our skin more than that of any living playwright.” —New York Times Upon its premiere at the National Theatre, Betrayal was immediately recognized as a masterpiece. It won the Olivier Award for best new play, and has since been performed all around the world and made into an Academy Award-nominated film starring Jeremy Irons, Ben Kingsley, and Patricia Hodge. Betrayal begins with a meeting between adulterous lovers, Emma and Jerry, two years after their affair has ended. During the nine scenes of the play, we move back in time through the stages of their affair, ending in the house of Emma and her husband Robert, Jerry’s best friend. “[Betrayal] deals with the shifting balance of power in triangular relationships, and with the pain of loss. . . . Pinter probes the corrosive nature of betrayal . . . a world where pain and loss are explored with poetic precision.” —Guardian “Betrayal is an exquisite play, brilliantly simple in form and courageous in its search for a poetry that turns banality into a melancholy beauty.” —Newsweek “There is hardly a line into which desire, pain, alarm, sorrow, rage or some kind of blend of feelings has not been compressed, like volatile gas in a cylinder less stable than it looks . . . The play's subject is not sex, not even adultery, but the politics of betrayal and the damage it inflicts on all involved.” —Times (UK)

Pinter In Play written by Susan Hollis Merritt and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990 with Drama categories.

Pinter in Play provides a survey of diverse readings of the Harold Pinter canon organized around and presented in terms of the major critical schools of the past twenty-five years, from New Criticism to deconstruction to poststructuralism. Reflecting on the cultural, personal, sociological, and philosophical contexts of these diverse critical perspectives and the critics who express them, this book is equally about the act or the art of literary criticism and itself an important work of literary criticism. Drawing on interviews with Pinter scholars, Susan Hollis Merritt shows how critics "play" with Pinter and thereby seriously enforce personal, professional, and political affiliations. Cutting across traditional academic and nonacademic boundaries, Merritt argues that greater cooperation and collaboration among critics can resolve conflicts, promote greater social equity, and foster ameliorative critical and cultural change.

A collection of political essays, poetry, and dramatic works by the Nobel Prize–winning playwright and author of Betrayal. Throughout his life, playwright, poet, and political activist Harold Pinter has consistently cast light on the hypocrisy of power and those who would defend the status quo for the sake of their own security and comfort. Awarded the Wilfred Owen Prize in 2004 for his poetry condemning US military intervention in Iraq, Mr. Pinter has succeeded in combining his artistry with his political activism. Death etc. brings together Pinter’s most poignant and especially relevant writings in response to war. From chilling psychological portraits of those who commit atrocities in the name of a higher power, to essays on the state-sponsored terrorism of present-day regimes, to solemn hymns commemorating the faceless masses that perish unrecognized, Mr. Pinter’s writings are as essential to the preservation of open debate as to our awareness of personal involvement in the fate of our global community.

The Weasel Under The Cocktail Cabinet written by Binnie Brand Yeates and has been published by Booktango this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-12-26 with Literary Criticism categories.

Why were Harold Pinter’s plays met with so much disdain in the early years, when he has since been acknowledged as one of the greatest British dramatists of the twentieth century? In this study, Binnie Brand Yeates examines and compellingly demonstrates, through Pinter’s striking theatrical skills and the behaviour, motivation and language of the characters in the plays written between 1957 and 1964, the probable cause of the alienation, and leaves no doubt that, though controversial, Pinter has in fact always been an extremely powerful and accomplished playwright. One of the first commentaries ever written on Pinter’s plays, now with a 2013 Postscript covering 'The Hothouse' and selected plays written between 1978 and 1991, this is an original, thought-provoking and eye-opening interpretation, an essential reader for students, theatre lovers and Pinter devotees alike. “What Binnie Yeates offers here is not just another set of thoughts on Pinter's early plays, but one that captures a snapshot of the growth of his reputation in the mid-sixties. Based upon a dissertation that Binnie wrote in 1966, she effectively summarises the first key phase of Pinter’s writing up to and including the career-defining 'The Homecoming'. With little dedicated Pinter scholarship available at the time of the original study, Yeates considered Pinter free from too much critical noise on her subject, and did so predominantly through considering character and motivation. She offers thoughts on Pinter's signatures of menace, status and game-playing, and how his work affected audience through specific uses of language and the impact of disorientation. The work captures an admiration for the playwright in a passionately articulated defence and appreciation of his plays, and reminds us of a time when his reputation was still being defined.” Dr Mark Taylor-Batty Senior Lecturer in Theatre Studies, University of Leeds; Executive, International Harold Pinter Society

Harold Pinter written by Graham Saunders and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-06-05 with Performing Arts categories.

Harold Pinter provides an up-to-date analysis and reappraisal concerning the work of one of the most studied and performed dramatists in the world. Drawing extensively from The Harold Pinter Archive at the British Library as well as reviews and other critical materials, this book offers new insights into previously established views about his work. The book also analyses and reappraises specific key historical and contemporary productions, including a selection of Pinter’s most significant screenplays. In particular, this volume seeks to assess Pinter’s critical reputation and legacy since his death in 2008. These include his position as a political writer and political activist – from disassociation and neutrality on the subject until relatively late in his career when his drama sought to explicitly address questions of political dissent and torture by totalitarian regimes. The book revisits some familiar territories such as Pinter’s place as a British absurdist and the role memory plays in his work, but it also sets out to explore new territories such as Pinter’s changing attitudes towards gender in the light of #MeToo and queer politics and how in particular a play such as The Caretaker (1960) through several key productions has brought the issues of race into sharper focus. Part of the Routledge Modern and Contemporary Dramatist series, Harold Pinter provides an essential and accessible guide to the dramatists’ work.

PINTER ET CETERA, edited by Craig N. Owens, is among the first volumes published since playwright Harold Pinter's death to account for the many ways his poems, plays, fiction, screenwriting, and public statements have have influenced the creative work of artists and writers worldwide. It collects nine essays by nine scholars from five nations, each approaching Pinter's work from a different perspective. Together, these essays offer a compelling argument for thinking of Pinter not merely as a unique writer whose individual genius has introduced the world to a particular aesthetic, but more importantly, as an artist working within numerous traditions, influencing and influenced by the work of painters, installation artists, film directors, photographers, poets and, of course, theatre-makers. PINTER ET CETERA is a bold step toward expanding our understanding of Pinter and establishing its importance beyond the absurdist stage. Contributors include Judith Roof, Ubiratan Paiva de Oliveira, Kyounghye Kwon, Mark Taylor-Batty, Michael Stuart Lynch, Jeanne Colleran, Andrew Wyllie, Christopher Wixson, and Lance Norman.

Essay from the year 2014 in the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: PhD, University of Tehran, language: English, abstract: The Caretaker (1960) by Harold Pinter, as a successful play in the twentieth century, reflects the incommunicability of language. In fact, Pinter has depicted the failure of communication, implying that language is at the verge of crisis. In order to analyze the elements that play role in revealing the non-essential quality of language, Jan Blommaert's Critical Discourse Analysis that describes the mechanism through which language and linguistic patterns act in social system can be helpful and efficient. This efficiency lies in investigating the common grounds of language and social studies. In the play, the incommunicability of language is drawn by the inequality the characters are involved with, the choice they have in using the language, the archive they use when choosing their language as the representative of determination. Furthermore, the personages have different voices in the work. The function of voice is controlling discourse. The voices that the characters employ in the play are directly related to their inequality formed in social system and to their identity constructed in it. Speaking of identity, it is accounted the major concept for which the figures, consciously or unconsciously, struggle. Identities are formed through interactions and can be subjected to change by switching from one discourse to another. Generally speaking, the present paper intends to unveil the incommunicability of language in The Caretaker by Harold Pinter through studying some of the devices of the CDA as explained by Jan Blommaert.
