It is the peculiar privilege of our age to have come into possession at once of the entire heritage of the past centuries, with their vast endeavours after ultimate truth, and at the same time of a scientific method for assaying their results. In what I have here advanced I have tried to utilise the advantages of that position. I have kept always before me the idea of religion as at once a principle and a history.
