Excerpt from The Ethic of Jesus According to the Synoptic Gospels Of monographs on the ethical teaching of our Lord there are not many as yet; but the subject receives treatment more or less ample in works on Christian Ethics in general, as well as in those on New Testament Theology; and some guidance to these treasures will be found in the footnotes. Neither Jesus nor Paul developed a formal ethical system, yet each left a moral legacy that forms the core of New Testament ethics. In this book, Frank Matera examines the ethic found in the teachings of Jesus and Paul. He explores the broad range of moral concerns found in these writings and finds an identifiable unity that underlies the ethical teachings of both.

Excerpt from The Ethical Teaching of Jesus This book originated from a course of lectures, which were prepared for the students of the Union Theological Seminary, in the fulfilment of my duty as Professor of Biblical Theology. The field of Bib lical Theology may be divided into three divisions. Biblical Religion, Biblical Faith, and Biblical Ethics (see General Introduction to the Study of Holy Scripture pp. 604 sq). After the completion of the courses on Biblical Religion and Biblical Faith I undertook an inductive study of Biblical Ethics. This I found to be a comparatively unexplored field; for most scholars have devoted their attention to the central theme, the Biblical Faith: many to the Re ligion of the Old Testament; but few to the Ethics, either of the Old Testament, or the New Testament; and these few have for the most part considered the subject on the basis of selected passages for homi letical or practical purposes from the point of view of the ethical Philosophy, which they held. My atten tion was first given to the ethics of the Old Testa ment, after which I made a complete inductive study of the Ethics of Jesus. This study was revised sev eral times as the lectures were repeated to different classes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Go And Do Likewise written by William Spohn and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-09-01 with Philosophy categories.

What does Jesus have to do with ethics? There are two brief answers given by believers: "everything" and "not much." While evangelical or fundamentalist Christians would find authoritative guidance in the words and commands of Jesus as recorded in the New Testament, many mainstream Christian ethicists would say that Jesus is too concrete or narrowly particular to have any direct import for ethics. In this book, Williams Spohn takes a middle way, showing how Jesus is the "concrete universal" of Christian ethics. By forming a bridge from the lives of contemporary Christians to the words and deeds of Jesus, Jesus' story as a whole exemplifies moral perception, motivation and Christian identity. In addition, Spohn shows how the practices of Christian spirituality--specifically prayer, service, and community--train the imagination and reorient emotions to produce a character and a way of life consonant with Christian New Testament moral teaching.

Excerpt from Conscience and Christ: Six Lectures on Christian Ethics HE present lectures were delivered as the Haskell Lectures in the Theological Seminary of Oberlin College, Ohio, during the autumn of 1913. They would have been published earlier but for the war. They were delivered very much as they stand, with a few omissions. I have thought it best to add considerable notes and appendices rather than to enlarge the lectures to an extent which would in several cases have involved complete re-writing. Answering the call of the Second Vatican Council for moral theology to 'draw more fully on the teaching of Holy Scripture, ' the authors examine the virtues that both flow from Scripture and provide a lens by which to interpret Scripture. By remaining true to both the New Testament's emphasis on the human response to God's gracious activity in Jesus Christ and to the ethical needs and desires of Christians in the twenty-first century, the authors address key topics such as discipleship, the Sermon on the Mount, love, sin, politics, justice, sexuality, marriage, divorce, bioethics, and ecology

Excerpt from Ethical Christianity: A Series of Sermons Nothing is more remarkable and, from one point of view, more encouraging than the fact that every attack which has been made upon the Christian religion has been founded upon a total misconception of its nature. In our own day a great many persons, both educated and uneducated, have imagined themselves to be opponents of Christianity. But when their arguments and denunciations are carefully examined, it is found that what they have rejected is some perversion or caricature. Nothing is more common than to hear persons talking about "giving up" Christianity who have never had any real Christianity to give up; or, to speak more accurately, who have never given up anything really Christian which they were fortunate enough to possess. A short time ago one of the great apostles of Positivism astonished mankind by announcing that he had been a Christian in his youth, and then proceeded with the utmost naivete to disclose that by being a Christian in his youth he meant that when he was a boy he held certain metaphysical dogmas with respect to the creation of the universe and the nature of the soul!
