"Vivid, lucid, and well-written. I came away with a better understanding of how the specific realities of being 'submissive wives' are negotiated, constructed, challenged, and transformed."—Lynn Davidman, author of Tradition in a Rootless World "Griffith's deft portrayal is a unique and important contribution to the study of Pentecostal spirituality and a compelling model for the retelling of women's religious experience in twentieth-century American culture."—Margaret Bendroth, author of Fundamentalism and Gender, 1875 to Present

Rich in historical events and colorfully written, this fascinating account of women in the church spans nearly two thousand years of church history. It tells of events and aspirations, determination and disappointment, patience and achievement that mark the history of daughters of the church from the time of Jesus to the present. The authors have endeavored to present an objective story. The very fact that readers may find themselves surprised now and again by the prominent role of women in certain events and movements proves an inequality that historical narrative has often been guilty of. This is a book about women. It is a setting straight off the record -- a restoring of balance to history that has repeatedly played down the significance of the contributions of women to the theology, the witness, the movements, and the growth of the church. An exegetical study of relevant Scripture passages offers stimulating thought for discussion and for serious reevaluation of historical givens. This volume is enriched by pictures, appendixes, bibliography, and indexes. Like many of the women whose stories it tells, this book has a subdued strength that should not be underestimated.

Prophetic Sons And Daughters written by Deborah M. Valenze and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1985-12-01 with History categories.

In a study important to the fields of women's studies and English literature, as well as to the religious and social history of Britain, Deborah Valenze argues the significance of a cottage-based evangelicalism that responded to the transformation of England in the nineteenth century. She goes beyond previous treatments of popular religion by offering a glimpse into the lives of humble people for whom a domestic form of religion became the focal point of daily activity. In addition, she opens up a hitherto unknown aspect of the history of nineteenth-century women by demonstrating the importance of working-class female preachers--vigorous ministers who risked their physical well-being and reputations by traveling widely on their own and speaking publicly to audiences of both sexes. Using local histories, memoirs, and the history of Methodist sectarianism to explore conditions confronted by evangelicals, Dr. Valenze concludes that cottage religion provided the basis for domestic and spiritual ideals of laboring families during a period of tremendous upheaval. She shows how this ideology enabled women to challenge the institutions and values of industrial society and to exercise their power in both private and public spheres. Originally published in 1985. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. One day, Frankie Roberts hears a preacher pronounce that a woman’s place is in the home, not in the pulpit. But this mother of four daughters and wife of a pastor in New Jersey won’t hear of it; she knows she has a special calling. In 1959, Frankie packs up her children, leaves her husband, and moves to Sioux City, Iowa, to start a ministry. In this memoir, one of Frankie’s daughters, the author Debra Roberts Torres-Reyes narrates her mother’s story. Availing herself of both humor and honesty, Torres-Reyes describes being raised by Pentecostal Holiness Ministers and living with a fanatical preacher mother who inflicts both physical and verbal abuse on her offspring. The author reflects on how the church’s views and actions—speaking in tongues, casting out demons, and dancing in the spirit—caused her to grow up with poor self-esteem, to suffer panic attacks, and to live in constant mental and emotional torment about The Rapture, demons, the devil, and hell. The Evangelical’s Daughter describes how Torres-Reyes ultimately breaks out of a self-destructive lifestyle, joins the military, and later attends college and law school, finally becoming an attorney. This is one woman’s true story about finding God and leaving religious dogma behind.

Cultures in our world often endorse the acceptability of beliefs and behaviors that God does not approve of. Can a man be wiser than God? The answer to that question from the Christian biblical perspective is "Absolutely not!" Viewing women as objects of lust and not people of value who Jesus sacrificed His life to save and redeem is one of the problems of this world we live in. This Christian fiction novel I wrote aims to shine the light of Jesus Christ on the consciousness of the reader, partly in an attempt to uncover and expose the lies of the enemy about the consequences of sexual sins. There is only one truth, and that is found in the gospels of Jesus the Messiah! There are some that want people, and women specifically, to be blind to the destructive nature of sin because misery loves company and because a predator wants prey. The fact is that there are many great reasons to obey God in this area of life, including preventing sexually transmitted diseases, eliminating the possibility of an unwanted pregnancy or abortion, having the support of a God-fearing spouse to manage the difficulties of life, and raising children together, and even financial security because of the commitment and trust in a Christian marriage that is truly devoted to God. In this book, you will read about a prodigal daughter named Magdalene. I'm sure that name is familiar to Bible readers. Magdalene's various experiences through her journey of life, which I created as an expression of literary art, illustrate the importance of making good decisions when tackling real-life issues in our world today, such as those mentioned above. Even more real is the Savior of this world that Magdalene encounters, who welcomes her as a loving Father. The parable Jesus teaches us in Luke 15, found in the Bible, inspired me to write this book. When Magdalene accepts Jesus into her heart after an encounter with a special person sent to her by God, Magdalene also learns to take accountability for her own mistakes. In this way, she finds forgiveness, repentance, and a closer relationship with Jesus that brings her a new and better life. Magdalene leaving her old life and turning toward Jesus is the exciting part of this book! I am not going to give any spoilers because I want you to read this book and find out for yourself what happens. I wrote this book for the saved and the lost, so if you are a prodigal son or daughter, then this book is for you too. My hope is that some women might read this book who identify with Magdalene's lifestyle at the beginning of the book and that those readers feel the Holy Spirit calling them to make a decision to live by faith in Jesus Christ, as happens to several characters in this book. Jesus is real! God loves you no matter what you've done because of His goodness, not because any of us can ever earn His love and goodness! God's grace is always a gift! For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not a result of works, so that no one may boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9 NASB)

Bestselling Author Reveals How God Empowers Women for Leadership and Purpose Christian women are often led to believe they are God's afterthoughts--as if they were created inferior to men or destined by God to play a secondary role in life. Not so, says bestselling author J. Lee Grady, father of four daughters and a leading international voice confronting the abuse of women. He counters that the Bible's message is neither sexist nor patronizing. Through sharing the lives of 23 mold-breaking biblical women, Grady shows how God enables his daughters to do amazing, even impossible things. He also reveals the empowering, yet often-overlooked, gifts God longs to give each of his daughters--gifts like wisdom, fruitfulness, leadership, family, and boldness. When women learn to receive each of these, and more, as a divine inheritance, they will live the fearless and beautiful lives of purpose God desires for them.

Hands Off My Daughter Have you ever asked yourself: "How can I protect my daughter from the pull of our culture that declares sex before marriage is normal and acceptable?" You are not alone. Many Christian men face this dilemma. They fear for the future of their children-daughters and sons alike. In this frank narrative, Bill Pittenger reveals the world's deceptive propaganda and philosophies that contradict biblical principles for godly living. He challenges fathers and men of all ages to resist these fallacies. He calls for Dad to accept the helm of the family ship and guide her through the winds and currents of our culture. Bill Pittenger is a cross-cultural minister, teacher, and cartoonist with an MA in social science. He and his wife Shirley taught high school for over twenty years in Bolivia, South America. Bill is active in his local church teaching, mentoring younger men, and counseling married couples in conjunction with Shirley.
