Computational intelligence is a well-established paradigm, where new theories with a sound biological understanding have been evolving. The current experimental systems have many of the characteristics of biological computers (brains in other words) and are beginning to be built to perform a variety of tasks that are difficult or impossible to do with conventional computers. As evident, the ultimate achievement in this field would be to mimic or exceed human cognitive capabilities including reasoning, recognition, creativity, emotions, understanding, learning and so on. This book comprising of 17 chapters offers a step-by-step introduction (in a chronological order) to the various modern computational intelligence tools used in practical problem solving. Staring with different search techniques including informed and uninformed search, heuristic search, minmax, alpha-beta pruning methods, evolutionary algorithms and swarm intelligent techniques; the authors illustrate the design of knowledge-based systems and advanced expert systems, which incorporate uncertainty and fuzziness. Machine learning algorithms including decision trees and artificial neural networks are presented and finally the fundamentals of hybrid intelligent systems are also depicted. Academics, scientists as well as engineers engaged in research, development and application of computational intelligence techniques, machine learning and data mining would find the comprehensive coverage of this book invaluable.

Evolutionary algorithms and metaheuristics are widely used to provide efficient and effective approximate solutions to computationally hard optimization problems. With the widespread use of intelligent systems in recent years, evolutionary algorithms have been applied, beyond classical optimization problems, to AI system parameter optimization and the design of artificial neural networks and feature selection in machine learning systems. This volume will present recent results of applications of the most successful metaheuristics, from differential evolution and particle swarm optimization to artificial neural networks, loT allocation, and multi-objective optimization problems. It will also provide a broad view of the role and the potential of evolutionary algorithms as service components in Al systems.

Over the last two decades the field of Intelligent Systems delivered to human kind significant achievements, while also facing major transformations. 20 years ago, automation and knowledge-based AI were still the dominant paradigms fueling the efforts of both researchers and practitioners. Later, 10 years ago, statistical machine intelligence was on the rise, heavily supported by the digital computing, and led to the unprecedented advances in and dependence on digital technology. However, the resultant intelligent systems remained designer-based endeavors and thus, were limited in their true learning and development abilities. Today, the challenge is to have in place intelligent systems that can develop themselves on behalf of their creators, and gain abilities with no or limited supervision in the tasks they are meant to perform. Cognitive development systems, and the supporting cognitive computing are on the rise today, promising yet other significant achievements for the future of human kind. This book captures this unprecedented evolution of the field of intelligent systems, presenting a compilation of studies that covers all research directions in the field over the last two decades, offering to the reader a broad view over the field, while providing a solid foundation from which outstanding new ideas may emerge.

This book presents selected papers from the 23rd Asia Pacific Symposium on Intelligent and Evolutionary Systems (IES 2019), which was held in Tottori, Japan, on December 6–8, 2019. Today, various types of intelligent system can be found everywhere. However, none of them can be developed or understood from only one perspective. As such, this book collects unique ways of thinking about intelligent systems. It discusses evolutionary and complex adaptive systems, which have been useful approaches for tackling intelligent systems. It also examines the recent developments in the field of artificial intelligence that are driving research on intelligent systems. Addressing topics related to intelligent transport systems, machine learning and neural networks, data science and decision analytics, evolutionary and nature-inspired computation, and agents and complex systems, this book is a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners wanting to develop or understand intelligent and evolutionary systems.

Preamble The emergence of machine intelligence during the second half of the twentieth century is the most important development in the evolution of this planet since the origin of life two to three thousand million years ago. The emergence of machine intelligence within the matrix of human society is analogous to the emergence, three billion years ago, of complex, self-replicating molecules within the matrix of an energy-rich molecular soup - the first step in the evolution of life. The emergence of machine intelligence within a human social context has set into motion irreversible processes which will lead to an evolutionary discontinuity. Just as the emergence of "Life" represented a qualitatively different form of organisation of matter and energy, so will pure "Intelligence" represent a qualitatively different form of organisation of matter, energy and life. The emergence of machine intelligence presages the progression of the human species as we know it, into a form which, at present, we would not recognise as "human". As Forsyth and Naylor (1985) have pointed out: "Humanity has opened two Pandora's boxes at the same time, one labelled genetic engineering, the other labelled knowledge engineering. What we have let out is not entirely clear, but it is reasonable to hazard a guess that it contains the seeds of our successors".
