My plan has been to be as concise as possible to keep the running note of theoretical and in strumental progress and development before the reader; also to be non-technical where plain language would answer. Mention has been made only of composers and matters, who and which have actually moved the art onwards; and, inasmuch as one topic alone of the subject - say Form or Orchestration, could not possibly be adequately treated in the space allotted for my entire story, I must be pardoned if I have seemed to slip away from important points. Excerpt from Music and the Romantic Movement in France The study of the evolution of art and music in connection with contemporary social and political conditions has been urged on the ground that an understanding of the general life of any period is necessary to a svmpathetic understanding of the artistic production of that period. Some argue, on the other hand, that the study of art is, in fact, a study of the history of man and that it illuminates the study of history rather than vice versa. The truth is that, in studying either art or history. Certain general causes appear which in uence the development of both artistic and political ideas. Whatever we learn about these fundamental causes - whether in art or history - the knowledge we gain can always be helpful in unravelling any problems of art-development or of history that we try to solve. For the general underlying causes behind the changes which came at the end of the eighteenth and the beginning of the nineteenth centuries, I have drawn freely, in the present essay, upon various authorities. I am largely indebted to Professor Irving Babbitt of Harvard University, whose lectures have provided the main stimulus for the present study and whose book Rousseau and Romanticism (houghton and Mif in, Boston, 1919) is a definitive exposition of the many phases of the romantic point of view. My effort has been, after giving the reader a brief description of the intellectual background of the romantic period, to set against this background the prominent figures in the niusical life of France, with the double object, first, of placing each composer in the light which the understanding of the background throws on his work, and, second, of showing what each contributed to the main current of romanticism. Excerpt from History of English Music A Few words concerning the origin of this book are necessary. It was already begun during an illness in 1892, and arrangements were made for its publication. But upon further investigation, especially of the early MSS., I perceived that the wealth of most valuable material still unexamined was far greater than I had suspected; so great, in fact, as to modify my previous opinions concerning English music in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. What I had previously written had largely to be rejected, and the whole plan of the work was altered; while three years' study has been necessary before I could let the book be printed. A variety of accidents unfortunately prevented a systematic comparison of every proof-sheet with the original sources of information, a test I had intended to apply; should any mistakes have arisen thereby, they will be duly published as they are discovered, and corrected in future editions. The main hindrance, in this and other respects, has, of course, been my living away from London and the other great repositories of MSS.; but I am able in consequence to have a clearer view of the condition of music in the whole country, of our defects and their causes, than I should probably have acquired had I been a London musician, when it would have been difficult or impossible for me to perceive the effects of centralisation upon our musical life.
