Excerpt from The Excavations at Babylon The excavations were commenced on March 26, 1899, on the east side of the Kasr to the north of the Ishtar Gate. At my first stay in Babylon, June 3 - 4, 1887, and again on my second visit, December 29 - 31, 1897, I saw a number of fragments of enamelled brick reliefs, of which I took several with me to Berlin. The peculiar beauty of these fragments and their importance for the history of art was duly recognised by His Excellency R. Schone, who was then director-general of the Royal Museums, and this strengthened our decision to excavate the capital of the world empire of Babylonia. By the end of 1899 the Procession Street of Marduk was opened up as far as the north-east corner of the Principal Citadel and a cross-cut was driven through the north front of the Principal Citadel. Excerpt from Legends of Babylon and Egypt, in Relation to Hebrew Tradition In these lectures an attempt is made, not so much to restate familiar facts, as to accommodate them to new and supplementary evidence which has been published in America since the outbreak of the war. But even without the excuse of recent discovery, no apology would be needed for any comparison or contrast of Hebrew tradition with the mythological and legendary beliefs of Babylon and Egypt. Hebrew achievements in the sphere of religion and ethics are only thrown into stronger relief when studied against their contemporary background. The bulk of our new material is furnished by some early texts, written towards the close of the third millennium B.c. They incorporate traditions which extend in unbroken outline from their own period into the remote ages of the past, and claim to trace the history of man back to his creation. They represent the early national traditions of the Sumerian people, who preceded the Semites as the ruling race in Babylonia; and incidentally they necessitate a revision of current views with regard to the cradle of Babylonian civilization. The most remarkable of the new documents is one which relates in poetical narrative an account of the Creation, of Antediluvian history, and of the Deluge. It thus exhibits a close resemblance in structure to the corresponding Hebrew traditions, a resemblance that is not shared by the Semitic-Babylonian Versions at present known. But in matter the Sumerian tradition is more primitive than any of the Semitic versions. In spite of the fact that the text appears to have reached us in a magical setting, and to some extent in epitomized form, this early document enables us to tap the stream of tradition at a point far above any at which approach has hitherto been possible. Excerpt from The Life of the Ancient East: Being Some Chapters of the Romance of Modern Excavation The sites chosen for study have not been taken at random, as might appear on a casual glance. Each one finds its place here because of some special contribution which it made in bygone days to human knowledge and culture, or else because of some special advance of our knowledge of the past which has resulted from its excavation. Thus, to take instances, Babylon has its place, not only because of its ancient greatness, but because of the inestimable value to the human race of its venerable system of Law, revealed by the discovery of the Code of Hammurabi; Abydos, not only because it was the chief seat of that form of faith which expressed the Egyptian's invincible yearning for immortality, but also because its excavation has given back to us the centuries which went before the dawn of History in Egypt and Gezer, because its very Obscurity has enabled it to pre serve for us, almost unbroken, the evidence of the strange sequence of races which strove for dominion in the most interesting land on earth. Excerpt from Babylon of Egypt: A Study in the History of Old Cairo On the contrary I shall show, or aim at showing, in this essay that for many centuries before the conquest Babylon was the recognized name of a town or city of great importance: that the term was so understood at the time of the conquest: and that this usage prevailed for some centuries after the conquest. At the same time it will be made clear that, owing to that strange dualism of nomenclature which the normal coexistence of different languages in Egypt renders so common there, the usage of the term cannot be sharply distinguished from other names of the same town or locality: but that in fact the primeval name of xruu, the ancient name of Misr (which was also adopted by the Arabs), the name of Memphis, the old capital, the Greek name Letopolis, and finally the name Fustat, bestowed on the place by the Arabs, are all used more or less interchangeably with Babylon at different epochs by various writers, Coptic, Greek, or Arabic. Excerpt from The History of Babylonia Our astronomical system came originally from the plains of Chaldea. The Babylonians divided the face of the heavens into constellations of stars, and named these after their supposed influence, or from their resemblance to various fantastic forms. Excerpt from Mesopotamian Archaeology: An Introduction to the Archaeology of Babylonia and Assyria In addition to the chapters which deal expressly with the cultural evolution of the dwellers in Mesopotamia, two chapters are devoted to the consideration of the Cuneiform writing - its pictorial origin, the history of its decipherment, and the literature of which it is the vehicle, while another chapter is occupied with a bistori cal review of the excavations. The short chronological summary at the end obviously makes not the slightest pretension to even being a comprehensive summary it merely purports to give the general chronological order of some of the better known rulers and kings of Baby lonia and Assyria to whom allusion is made in this volume, together with a notice of some of the more sig nificant landmarks in the history of the two countries.
