Jose Juan Tablada (1871-1945) wrote more than 20 books on a range of subjects in several genres but is best known as an avant-garde poet of the Modernista movement. Now all three volumes of his experimental poetry--Un dia...poemas sinteticos, El jarro de flores (disociaciones liricas), and Li-Po y otros poemas--have been translated into English, carefully researched and crafted, and presented here for the first time in one volume. The work also includes translations of Tablada poems that appeared in print prior to his primary works. These precursors trace the path that would lead Tablada to his great experiment.

Engages in a critical reanalysis of historical Ibero-American experimental poetry in order to demonstrate how the contemporary digital vanguard owes much to this tradition. With a broad geographic and linguistic sweep covering more than one hundred years of poetry, this book investigates the relationships between and among technology, aesthetics, and politics in Ibero-American experimental poetry. Eduardo Ledesma analyzes visual, concrete, kinetic, and digital poetry that questions what the “literary” means, what constitutes poetry, and how, if at all, visual and verbal arts should be differentiated. Radical Poetry examines how poets use the latest technologies (cinematography, radio, television, and software) to create poetry that self-consciously interrogates its own form, through close alliances with conceptual and abstract art, performance, photography, film, and new media. To do so, Ledesma draws on pertinent theories of metaphor, affect, time, space, iconicity, and cybernetics. Ledesma shows how José Juan Tablada (Mexico), Joan Salvat-Papasseit (Catalonia), Clemente Padín (Uruguay), Fernando Millán (Spain), Décio Pignatari (Brazil), Ana María Uribe (Argentina), and others turn words, machines, and, more recently, the digital into flesh, making word-objects “come alive” by assembling text to act and seem human, whether on the page, on walls, or on screens. Eduardo Ledesma is Assistant Professor of Spanish at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

It is truly original in its conception and deeply grounded in its knowledge, and it communicates a passion for its topics, especially the digital age. This is a major contribution that surely will be a new model for literary critique in these languages.” — Gwen Kirkpatrick, Georgetown University

Ángel Rama was among the most prominent Latin American literary and cultural critics of the twentieth century. This volume brings together—and makes available in English for the first time—some of his most influential writings from the 1960s up until his death in 1983. Meticulously curated and translated by José Eduardo González and Timothy R. Robbins, Spanish American Literature in the Age of Machines and Other Essays will give readers a new, deeper appreciation of how Rama's views on Latin American literary history reflect the dynamic between the region and the rest of the world. His rich meditations on the relation between narrative technique, social class, and group behavior—from the point of view of the periphery of capitalism—make this volume an important contribution to the study of world literature.

The essays in this book, groundbreaking for its focus on teaching Latin American poetry, reflect the region's geographic and cultural heterogeneity. They address works from Mexico, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Cuba, Brazil, Argentina, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Uruguay, as well as from indigenous communities found within these national distinctions, including the Kaqchikel Maya and Zapotec. The volume's essays help instructors teach poetry written from the second half of the twentieth century on, meaningfully connecting this contemporary corpus with older poetic traditions. Contributors address teaching various topics, from the silva and the long poem to Afro-descendant poetry, in ways that bring performance, digital approaches, queer theory, and translation into action. The insights offered here will demonstrate how Latin American poetry can become a part of classes in African diasporic studies, indigenous studies, history, and anthropology.

This book aims to draw maps about Polypoetry manifestations around Europe and Americas. It gathers scholars and artists who dedicated their work for understanding the avant-garde expressions in print, sound, and visual languages, as well as to demonstrate how the experimentalism affects the world in a political and aesthetical perspective. In order to put different ideas in a framework, the first part of this book ("European Maps of Polypoetry") brings a debate about the space of Polypoetry in relationship with other avant-garde manifestations. The second one ("Intertwining voices") drives our attention to the Americas, focusing on how visual and digital poetry, music, and festivals embraced Polypoetry ideas, in a way to build a broaden art network between Europe and the Americas.

The Borzoi Anthology Of Latin American Literature From The Time Of Columbus To The Twentieth Century written by Emir Rodríguez Monegal and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1977 with English literature categories.

A comprehensive anthology including historical and critical as well as biographical commentary on each writer's work and on each major period in the literature as a whole. Professor Monegal has organized this gigantic anthology, which reaches from the time of Christopher Columbus to our own decade, on the premise that "Latin American literature is more an idea than an actuality, simply because Latin America itself has never achieved cultural integration." True enough, as the reader of any daily newspaper might guess; but Monegal goes further. His selections demonstrate that it wasn't until the middle of the 19th century, when a late-blooming variety of European Romanticism combined with newly achieved Latin American political independence, that the intention of a Latin American literature was even conceived. Then the letters and journals of Vespucci, Bernal Diaz, and their fellow explorers and conquistadors, with their Renaissance insistence on the fabulous, came to serve as a source for the continental vision of men like Andres Bello, Ruben Dario and Jose Enrique Rodo. Independence movements also produced political divisiveness and a backwater brand of literary realism that prevailed for decades; but in spite of this, the tendency of Latin American literature has been toward the marvelous and the formally experimental, and its most compelling metaphor, from Esteban Echeverria to Jorge Luis Borges and Gabriel Marquez, has been that of discovery.
