'Zairian Buddhism' is book three of the Time Hero Chronicles. Unlike the first two books, which contain a fictional account of the collision of three human cultures from three different time periods, this book explores in depth the philosophy of mindfulness and compassion that governs the future pacifist society of the people of Zarnia as described in the first two books of this series; TIME LOVES A HERO and THE LEGACY. This book was created to respond to questions from readers intrigued by the nature of the Zairian culture. The book describes how such a society might actually be created and function in a real world. The author is a serious practitioner of Mahayana Buddhism and draws from those principles as he lays out how and why a secular version of a mindful, compassionate society should play a role in future human society as Albert Einstein predicted might happen. He also explores the idea that the continued viability of the human species may depend upon our ability to travel down some version of this more peaceful path if we desire to avoid the barriers that ego attachment and tribalism present for our survival.

Dying To Self And Detachment written by James Kellenberger and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-29 with Philosophy categories.

Exploring the religious category of dying to self, this book aims to resolve contemporary issues that relate to detachment. Beginning with an examination of humility in its general notion and as a religious virtue that detachment presupposes, Kellenberger draws on a range of ancient, medieval, modern, and contemporary sources that address the main characteristics of detachment, including the work of Meister Eckhart, St. Teresa, and Simone Weil, as well as writers as varied as Gregory of Nyssa, Rabi'a al-Adawiyya, Søren Kierkegaard, Andrew Newberg, John Hick and Keiji Nishitani. Kellenberger explores the key issues that arise for detachment, including the place of the individual's will in detachment, the relationship of detachment to desire, to attachment to persons, and to self-love and self-respect, and issues of contemporary secular detachment such as inducement via chemicals. This book heeds the relevance of the religious virtue of detachment for those living in the twenty-first century.

The Sociology of Religion is a comprehensive and wide-ranging introduction to theoretical debates in the sociology of religion, placing these theories in the context of specific religious beliefs and practices. Using examples as diverse as primitive religions, Buddhism, millenial movements, the Protestant Ethic, secularisation, cults and the new religious movements, Malcolm Hamilton demonstrates the multiplicity of religious traditions and enables readers to place their own experiences in a wider context. He draws on both historical and anthropological perspectives in his examination of religious practices and outlines the work of major sociological theorists including Marx, Durkheim, Malinowski and other Functionalists, Frazer and Weber in the examination of world religion, bringing these theories up-to-date. The significance of each theoretical perspective is illustrated by chapters on particular beliefs and practices.

The primitive meaning of this celebrated word, Nirvana, seems to be twofold: on the one hand, 'becoming cool, cooling'; on the other hand, 'blowing out, ' 'extinguishing.' There is a nirvana of a man who is thirsty as well as of a candle. Hence two directions in the evolution of the religious or philosophical meaning of the word. Cooling, refreshment, the refreshment of a man who is suffering, the cooling of a man who is hot with desire, comfort, peace, serenity, bliss. Also extinction, detachment or extinction of the fire of the passions, negative bliss or extinction of suffering, annihilation or extinction of individual existence. Each metaphor is apt to convey two distinct ideas. On the one hand, Nirvana is Sanctity (arhattva). For a Saint (arhat) has become cold (sitibhuta), as he is no more burned by the fire of passions, and he has extinguished this fire. On the other hand, Nirvana is the ultimate end of a man, the state of a Saint after death. For Nirvana may be cooling of suffering-an eternal refreshment-or extinction of existence.
