The second volume of the Epigraphic Survey's series on Luxor Temple is devoted to the in situ reliefs and inscriptions of Tutankhamun's Colonnade Hall that were not documented in the first of the series, The Festival Procession of Opet in the Colonnade Hall (OIP 112). Included in this volume are reconstructions of the Eighteenth Dynasty facade of the hall, the northern and southern doorjamb reliefs, the upper register scenes, the decoration of the columns and their architraves, the dedicatory bandeau texts of the New Kingdom, graffiti from the later periods, and the three colossal statues that still stand in the northern end of the hall. The plates are accompanied by a booklet of translations and commentary on the iconographic and textual additions and revisions that were made by a long succession of Egyptian rulers and reflect the complex history of the monument.

In Egypt, from the Old to the New Kingdom, enigmatic texts were created on the basis of non-standardized lists of characters and phonetic signs, the exact principles of which are still unclear to this day. For the first time, this study examines in detail the three most comprehensive known inscription texts from the New Kingdom, which were discovered in the tombs of Tutenchamun, Ramses VI and Ramses IX. Darnell shows that these three texts have a theological, iconographic and formal connection, and calls them collectively the "Book of the Solar-Osirian Unity". Differentiated and lively, he presents the content and theological peculiarities of these texts that deal with the afterlife with each other and in relation to other enigmatic texts of the new as well as the Middle and Old Kingdom.

This volume presents a series of papers delivered at a two-day session of the Theban Workshop held at the British Museum in September 2003. This is the first complete translation and commentary on the important tableau and inscription of Queen Katimala/Karimala at Semna. Proper understanding of the paleography, grammar, and content reveals Katimala to have been a Nubian ruler at the time of the Twenty-First to Twenty-Second Dynasties of Ancient Egypt. She emerges as a political and military leader who took control of at least Lower Nubia in the wake of failed military activities on the part of a male predecessor. Katimala's inscription is not illegible, as has often been stated, but is a well-composed Lower Nubian example of a politico-religious manifesto applying many of the conventions of early Egyptian literary and historical compositions.

The second monograph devoted to the work of the Theban Desert Road Survey presents the major rock inscriptions of the northwestern Theban Desert and the western hinterlands of Qamula. The material includes six larger sites and several smaller collections and individual inscriptions and images, sites discovered by the Theban Desert Road Survey over the course of approximately twelve field seasons.
