The Re Mediation Of Media In The Fae Richards Photo Archive written by Rebecca Schlossberg and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014 with Archives categories.
The Fae Richards Photo Archive (1993-1996) by Zoe Leonard was originally made as "source material" for Cheryl Dunye's 1996 film The Watermelon Woman, but has since been exhibited as a standalone artwork in over 14 exhibitions. The film chronicles the making of a documentary on the fictional character Fae Richards, an African-American, lesbian performer who played "mammy" or maid roles in popular films in the 1930s, and starred in black-cast race films in the 1940s. Leonard's photographs "authenticate" Fae Richards, lending credence and facticity to the character created by Dunye by illustrating her personal and professional life through photographs. In this thesis, I argue that the Archive is an important early example of archive as art that draws attention to the failings of the institutional archive of record to store and transmit information about people. I examine the remediation, or "representation of one medium in another" of the Archive across the frameworks of film and exhibition, embedded as each medium is in a set of "material social practices." By first establishing a historically plausible visual record, then revealing the Archive as a fiction, Leonard critiques the archive as an authentic and necessary receptacle of knowledge, and analog photography as its privileged medium. Thus, the Archive does not try to retroactively fill in the gaps of a partial history, but instead reveals how history itself is constructed through specific uses of media.

Winner, 2018 Winifred Bryan Horner Outstanding Book Award Grassroots historiography has been essential in shaping American sexual identities in the twentieth century. Retroactivism in the Lesbian Archives examines how lesbian collectives have employed “retroactivist” rhetorics to propel change in present identification and politics. By appropriating and composing versions of the past, these collectives question, challenge, deconstruct, and reinvent historical discourse itself to negotiate and contest lesbian identity. Bessette considers a diverse array of primary sources, including grassroots newsletters, place-based archives, experimental documentary films, and digital video collections, to investigate how retroactivists have revised and replaced dominant accounts of lesbian deviance. Her analysis reveals inventive rhetorical strategies leveraged by these rhetors to belie the alienating, dispersing effects of discourses that painted women with same-sex desire as diseased and criminal. Focusing on the Daughters of Bilitis, the Lesbian Herstory Archives, and the June L. Mazer Archives, and on historiographic filmmakers such as Barbara Hammer and Cheryl Dunye, Bessette argues that these retroactivists composed versions of a queer past that challenged then-present oppressions, joined together provisional communities, and disrupted static definitions and associations of lesbian identity. Retroactivism in the Lesbian Archives issues a challenge to feminist and queer scholars to acknowledge how historiographic rhetoric functions in defining and contesting identities and the historical forces that shape them.

A richly illustrated history of the glittering world of queer artistic life in the 1920s and ’30s In Queer Moderns, Alice Friedman tells the fascinating story of the queer avant-garde of the 1920s and ’30s in New York, Paris, and Venice, as seen through the eyes of Max Ewing (1903–1934), a young musician, photographer, and man-about-town who, although virtually unknown today, moved in extraordinary circles. In his photographs and letters, we meet the rising stars of modern art, music, dance, and literature and enter a world of interracial friendship, “queer space,” and experimentation that shone brightly before being swept away by the Depression. It is a remarkable story that reveals that the history of modernism is more queer and more Black than previously recognized. In the 1920s, Ewing became part of an international coterie of artists led by Carl Van Vechten and Muriel Draper. In Europe, he was entertained by Gertrude Stein, met Stravinsky, and took a road trip with Romaine Brooks and Natalie Barney. In 1928, in a closet in his apartment, Ewing created the Gallery of Extraordinary Portraits, an installation of photos of his favorite celebrities—Black and white, clothed and nude. For his Carnival of Venice, he took portraits of more than a hundred friends—including Paul Robeson, Berenice Abbott, Isamu Noguchi, Agnes de Mille, and E. E. Cummings—posed in front of a backdrop of Saint Mark’s Square. Like a character from a story by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ewing joined the party and then died tragically, unable to accept the end of his era or the lost dream of a new way of living. His story sheds new light on modernism and an artistic milieu that was ahead of its time.

From its invention to the internet age, photography has been considered universal, pervasive, and omnipresent. This anthology of essays posits how the question of when photography came to be everywhere shapes our understanding of all manner of photographic media. Whether looking at a portrait image on the polished silver surface of the daguerreotype, or a viral image on the reflective glass of the smartphone, the experience of looking at photographs and thinking with photography is inseparable from the idea of ubiquity—that is, the apparent ability to be everywhere at once. While photography’s distribution across cultures today is undeniable, the insidious logics and pervasive myths that have governed its spread demand our critical attention, now more than ever.

Outliers And American Vanguard Art written by Lynne Cooke and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018 with Art and society categories.
Some 250 works explore three distinct periods in American history when mainstream and outlier artists intersected, ushering in new paradigms based on inclusion, integration, and assimilation. The exhibition aligns work by such diverse artists as Charles Sheeler, Christina Ramberg, and Matt Mullican with both historic folk art and works by self-taught artists ranging from Horace Pippin to Janet Sobel and Joseph Yoakum. It also examines a recent influx of radically expressive work made on the margins that redefined the boundaries of the mainstream art world, while challenging the very categories of "outsider" and "self-taught." Historicizing the shifting identity and role of this distinctly American version of modernism's "other," the exhibition probes assumptions about creativity, artistic practice, and the role of the artist in contemporary culture. The exhibition is curated by Lynne Cooke, senior curator, special projects in modern art, National Gallery of Art.--Provided by publisher.
