Law studies and law practice present psychological, emotional, ethical, and other challenges that test the faith of law students and lawyers. Failures in faith can produce doubt, fear, anxiety, and even depression, substance abuse, and burnout. Law studies and law practice, like other worthwhile yet challenging endeavors, force law students and lawyers to define and commit to articles of faith. This guide helps law students and lawyers connect law studies and practice to faith, to give pursuit of a law career its greatest meaning. The guide illustrates how law students and lawyers develop in faith, passing through moral fields to discover and embrace a transcendent law practice--one that blesses the lawyer and lawyer's family while supporting and serving the flourishing of others. By footnoting the guide with Bible verses, the author shows law students and lawyers how closely law study and law practice are to faith, and how traditional forms of faith can guide and support a law student and lawyer in professional development. Even those who do not sense law studies and law practice to be spiritual pursuits can benefit from this unique and thought-provoking text. Chapters include: Introduction: Law as an Expression of Faith (Morality, Faith, Redemption, Transformation); Chapter 1: Law Studies: Challenges Strengthening Faith (Belief, Obedience, Honesty, Truth); Chapter 2: Law Knowledge: Faith at Law's Foundations (Love, Covenant, Provision, Community); Chapter 3: Law Skills: Faith Informing Services (Reason, Relationship, Counsel, Discernment); Chapter 4: Law Identity: Becoming a Lawyer of Faith (Calling, Character, Fitness, Responsibility); Chapter 5: Law Practice: The Demonstration of Faith (Service, Stewardship, Diligence, Charity); Conclusion: Faithful Professionals; Suggested Readings

Until the mid-1700s, law was not thought of as a science or profession. Most Virginians adhered to the English country tradition that considered law to be a local and personal affair. The growth of cities and business, however, guaranteed that disputes would spill over county boundaries. As law proliferated and became more complex, it encouraged the growth of a legal profession composed of men who shared specialized knowledge of law and the courts. Originally published in 1981. A UNC Press Enduring Edition -- UNC Press Enduring Editions use the latest in digital technology to make available again books from our distinguished backlist that were previously out of print. Fueled by grassroots activism and a growing collection of formal political organizations, the Christian Right became an enormously influential force in American law and politics in the 1980s and 90s. While this vocal and visible political movement has long voiced grave concerns about the Supreme Court and cases such as Roe v. Wade, they weren't able to effectively enter the courtroom in a serious and sustained way until recently. During the pivot from the 20th to the 21st century, a small constellation of high-profile Christian Right leaders began to address this imbalance by investing in an array of institutions aimed at radically transforming American law and legal culture. In Separate But Faithful, Amanda Hollis-Brusky and Joshua C. Wilson provide an in-depth examination of these efforts, including their causes, contours and consequences. Drawing on an impressive amount of original data from a variety of sources, they look at the conditions that gave rise to a set of distinctly "Christian Worldview" law schools and legal institutions. Further, Hollis-Brusky and Wilson analyze their institutional missions and cultural makeup and evaluate their transformative impacts on law and legal culture to date. In doing so, they find that this movement, while struggling to influence the legal and political mainstream, has succeeded in establishing a Christian conservative beacon of resistance; a separate but faithful space from which to incrementally challenge the dominant legal culture. Both a compelling narrative of the rise of Christian Right lawyers and a trenchant analysis of how institutional networks fuel the growth of social movements, Separate But Faithful challenges the dominant perspectives of the politics of law in contemporary America.
