A beautiful, moving collection of short stories, in many of which Updike revisits the haunts of his childhood from the vantage point of old age. In 'Fiftieth' old friends reconnect at a class reunion, and one of them is left wondering, 'What does it mean: the enormity of having been children and now being old, living next to death.' In the story 'The Full Glass' the protagonist describes somewhat ruefully the rituals of old age. Before going to bed, he raises his nightly water glass 'drinking a toast to the visible world, his impending disappearance from it be damned.' In 'Varieties of Religious Experiences' a grandfather, visiting his daughter in Brooklyn Heights, watches the tower of the World Trade Centre fall, and his view of a God is forever altered. Again and again in these memorable stories, Updike strikes to the heart, giving words to what is so often left unsaid. He is at once witty, devastatingly observant, touching - and, of course, a consummate storyteller. This is a collection that will be admired and cherished.

We live in radical times when God is transforming us into His image. We need fathers. We also need mothers. God always intended that fathers and mothers would complement one another. Male and female He made them. Without good godly mothering so many children are not nourished and their dreams die in the womb. May God breathe upon the mothers in Israel who will nourish, intercede and travail to bring forth His purposes. May they take their place alongside the fathers in this hour and provide a safe place for the orphans and for the abandoned ones, for the desolate and the lonely, for the dreamers and the intercessors-both in the Church and for those yet to come in that End Times almighty harvest of souls we are promised in this hour.

This powerful memoir from a #1 New York Times bestselling author and Newbery Medalist features poetry, letters, recipes, and other personal artifacts that provide an intimate look into his life and the loved ones he shares it with. In an intimate and non-traditional (or "new-fashioned") memoir, Kwame Alexander shares snapshots of a man learning how to love. He takes us through stories of his parents: from being awkward newlyweds in the sticky Chicago summer of 1967, to the sometimes-confusing ways they showed their love to each other, and for him. He explores his own relationships—his difficulties as a newly wedded, 22-year-old father, and the precariousness of his early marriage working in a jazz club with his second wife. Alexander attempts to deal with the unravelling of his marriage and the grief of his mother's recent passing while sharing the solace he found in learning how to perfect her famous fried chicken dish. With an open heart, Alexander weaves together memories of his past to try and understand his greatest love: his daughters. Full of heartfelt reminisces, family recipes, love poems, and personal letters, Why Fathers Cry at Night inspires bravery and vulnerability in every reader who has experienced the reckless passion, heartbreak, failure, and joy that define the whirlwind woes and wonders of love.

The second novel from the critically acclaimed writer of Pike, which was nominated for France’s prestigious Grand Prix de Littérature Policière crime fiction award and “easily rivals Larry Brown’s most renowned novels” (Spinetingler Magazine). In the tradition of Cormac McCarthy and Larry Brown comes a haunting story about men, their fathers, their sons, and the legacy of violence. For Patterson Wells, disaster is the norm. Working alongside dangerous, desperate, itinerant men as a tree clearer in disaster zones, he's still dealing with the loss of his young son. Writing letters to the boy offers some solace. The bottle gives more. Upon a return trip to Colorado, Patterson stops to go fishing with an old acquaintance, only to find him in a meth-induced delirium and keeping a woman tied up in the bathtub. In the ensuing chain of events, which will test not only his future but his past, Patterson tries to do the right thing. Still, in the lives of those he knows, violence and justice have made of each other strange, intoxicating bedfellows. Hailed as “the next great American writer” (Frank Bill, author of Crimes in Southern Indiana), Benjamin Whitmer has crafted a literary triumph that is by turns harrowing, darkly comic, and wise.

Where Are The Fathers The Babies Are Crying written by Mike N Apraku and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-10-30 with categories.

The book, "Where are the fathers? The babies are crying!" seeks to promote sanity in the church of God with regard to the excesses which have characterised the activities and conduct of some fathers in the Lord. It also seeks to encourage the Church generally, and the children in particular, to defend, support and promote the fathers in the Lord. It touches on the need for the fathers not to bless because of the meat (financial and other benefits) as Isaac sought to do when he asked Esau to prepare a meal so that he could bless him. It teaches that when the fathers bless because of meat, they deprive themselves of the ability to bless as was the case of Isaac who could not bless Esau when he had been satisfied by meat from his son, Jacob. It teaches that blessing because of meat dilutes their ability to bless and the fathers lose their spiritual sensitivity, come under the influence of deception, and create enmity among brethren. The book encourages the fathers to be giving rather than receiving fathers. It further encourages the children in the Lord to defend and support the fathers. It stresses that fathers are human beings and their strength can falter when faced with the unceasing battles of life. Failure however to defend the fathers deprive the church of her guiding light in moments of darkness. Fathers therefore require loyal sons to defend them against the onslaught of the enemy. This book draws out the importance of the fathers and warns that failure of the Church to protect and defend the fathers deprives her of their direction, covering and protection and the light which flows from them. With such deprivation, they can easily descend into premature death and sin.Furthermore, the book relates to the reasons why some children leave the fathers. It acknowledges that rebellion has not been in short supply ever since the devil revolted against the Lord. It accepts the fact that some sons leave the fathers because they might have been led by the Lord. The book shows how the sons should leave the fathers even if God is behind their departure. The response of the fathers towards departing children has been addressed in this book. The book further demonstrates that some sons however were led by the devil to leave their fathers and these categories of sons were motivated by the spirit of rebellion, greed, false prophecy, deception, pride, ingratitude, bitterness and resentment. The books encourages faithfulness, transparency, and accountability of the fathers toward their people in order to win them over in the fear of the Lord. In order to be trusted by their people, they must demonstrate their love for the people, live by example, and lay their lives for the people.

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the indie rock sensation known as Japanese Breakfast, an unforgettable memoir about family, food, grief, love, and growing up Korean American—“in losing her mother and cooking to bring her back to life, Zauner became herself” (NPR). • CELEBRATING OVER ONE YEAR ON THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER LIST In this exquisite story of family, food, grief, and endurance, Michelle Zauner proves herself far more than a dazzling singer, songwriter, and guitarist. With humor and heart, she tells of growing up one of the few Asian American kids at her school in Eugene, Oregon; of struggling with her mother's particular, high expectations of her; of a painful adolescence; of treasured months spent in her grandmother's tiny apartment in Seoul, where she and her mother would bond, late at night, over heaping plates of food. As she grew up, moving to the East Coast for college, finding work in the restaurant industry, and performing gigs with her fledgling band--and meeting the man who would become her husband--her Koreanness began to feel ever more distant, even as she found the life she wanted to live. It was her mother's diagnosis of terminal cancer, when Michelle was twenty-five, that forced a reckoning with her identity and brought her to reclaim the gifts of taste, language, and history her mother had given her. Vivacious and plainspoken, lyrical and honest, Zauner's voice is as radiantly alive on the page as it is onstage. Rich with intimate anecdotes that will resonate widely, and complete with family photos, Crying in H Mart is a book to cherish, share, and reread.
