Not illustrated. 1876 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER VI. THE FEAR OF GOD IS ACCOMPANIED BY THE MOST IMPORTANT SPIRITUAL BLESSINGS. MlND and body are so closely connected that they constantly and in many ways affect each other, and yet it is possible to look at each of them separately. This is true also of the temporal and spiritual blessings by which genuine religion is accompanied. These two classes of blessings are intimately connected, and in some cases intermingled. This is the case especially with the happiness of which true godliness is the source. Happiness is a temporal blessing, because it is enjoyed in the present world; but it must also be ranked among spiritual blessings, in so far as it is connected with spiritual things. True happiness can be enjoyed only by those whose hearts and minds are right towards God, and in their case it is undoubtedly a spiritual blessing. In connection with religion there are other blessings that have both a temporal and spiritual aspect. But while such blessings meet, and so unite through the connecting-link of religion as to present both a temporal and spiritual aspect, there are also many religious blessings that may be regarded as in their nature entirely spiritual, and to which our attention may be directed with profit. Some of these blessings are so intimately connected with religion as to form a part of it, and in this respect the fear of God is its own reward. As it is a duty to be religious, so religion is in itself a treasure. The duties of religion are precious privileges, and its doctrines, while demanding faith, afford at the same time abundant sources of comfort and consolation. This aspect of religion is well adapted to meet the requirements of human reason. If religion commends itself to reason because it promotes the...

This book covers a variety of approaches to the main issues usually covered by philosophy of religion textbooks, such as the meaning of "religion," six ways of relating theology to philosophy, naturalism versus supernaturalism and their respective difficulties, an explanation and defense of process theism or panentheism, God's attributes, critiques and defenses of the ontological, cosmological, and teleological arguments, religious experience including pluralistic and monistic mysticism, verification after death, and the future of reason and religion. In dealing with the arguments for the existence of God, theism wins. Though published some decades ago, there is very little in this book that the author would change today.

Faith Reason And The Existence Of God written by Denys Turner and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-09-16 with History categories.

The proposition that the existence of God is demonstrable by rational argument is doubted by nearly all philosophical opinion today and is thought by most Christian theologians to be incompatible with Christian faith. This book argues that, on the contrary, there are reasons of faith why in principle the existence of God should be thought rationally demonstrable and that it is worthwhile revisiting the theology of Thomas Aquinas to see why this is so. The book further suggests that philosophical objections to proofs of God's existence rely upon an attenuated and impoverished conception of reason which theologians of all monotheistic traditions might wish to reject. Denys Turner proposes that on a broader and deeper conception of it, human rationality is open to the 'sacramental shape' of creation as such and in its exercise of rational proof of God it in some way participates in that sacramentality of all things.

Reasoning From Faith written by Justin Sands and has been published by Indiana University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-01-16 with Philosophy categories.

Merold Westphal is considered to be one of the preeminent Continental philosophers of religion. His articulation of faith as the task of a lifetime has become a touchstone in contemporary debates concerning faith's relationship to reason. As Justin Sands explores his philosophy, he illuminates how Westphal's concept of faith reveals the pastoral, theological intent behind his thinking. Sands sees Westphal's philosophy as a powerful articulation of Protestant theology, but one that is in ecumenical dialogue with questions concerning apologetics and faith's relationship to ethics and responsibility, a more Catholic point of view. By bringing out these features in Westphal's philosophy, Sands intends to find core philosophical methodologies as well as a passable bridge for philosophers to cross over into theological discourses.
