How do gurus get their power? Gurus are extraordinary individuals who attract fanatical followers and wield incredible and at times destructive control over them. In this remarkable study, Anthony Storr, the acclaimed author of Solitude and Music and the Mind, examines why we are so enthralled with these dogmatic figures who satisfy our need for certainty. Taking as his examples such diverse figures as Jesus, Sigmund Freud, Ignatius Loyola, and David Koresh, Storr traces the typical patterns—often involving psychotic illness—that shape the guru’s development, and reveals how certain gurus become monsters while others become spiritual beacons.

Deena Burton is well known for her accomplishments as a dancer, choreographer, producer, and scholar of Indonesian Arts. In the course of her research she came across the pioneering work of Claire Holt, who had written about art and culture in New York and Europe, especially the rise of Modern Dance, between the fi rst and second World Wars. During a trip to Indonesia in 1930 Claire Holt became enamored of Javanese dance. She stayed for many years, on and off, and was among the community of artists and anthropologists living in Bali at that time including Walter Spies, Colin McPhee, Miguel Covarrubias, Margaret Mead and others who were both deeply infl uenced by this ancient culture and obsessive in documenting Indonesias emergence into the 20th century. This book, which began as Deenas PhD dissertation, is a tribute to her own dedication and that of a kindred spirit - Claire Holt and their love for the arts and peoples of Indonesia. This is Volume 7 of the series At the Feet of a Himalayan Master and includes the reminiscences of eight disciples of Swami Rama, five women and 3 men, three living in the US, one from the UK and four from India. This takes the total numbers of contributors to the series to 33 disciples who have generously shared their inspiring experiences with the Master. As with previous volumes of this series, readers will discover the many dimensions of Swami Rama. The authors of this volume are from diverse backgrounds: geographic, cultural, economic, religious professional. Despite these differences, they were drawn by Swamiji's compassion, love and caring mentorship. he could be a tough taskmaster, but knowing that this was also a manifestation of his love, disciples were not discouraged or driven away, but continued to work on their shortcomings. It is now more than two decades since Wamiji dropped his mortal coil, but his love, guidance and presence continue to instruct and inspire. May the younger generation of spiritual seekers who were born after Swamiji's mortal demise, find inspiration in these volumes and learn to discover the divinity that dwells within them.
