Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject American Studies - Miscellaneous, grade: 2,0, Free University of Berlin (John F. Kennedy Institut für Nordamerikastudien), course: Framing Reality, language: English, abstract: The study of film has been going on for several decades. During this time, the focus has been, especially in the 1970s, on looking (the gaze) and the spectator in general. Here in this paper I would like to look at the female also a bit on male gaze in connection with the movies Network and Blow Up. This means I will also consider film theory of the 1970s and 1980s but I want to focus my insight on contemporary spectatorship. To do this, I will also give a short overview of historical findings and important authors and their theses and how their theses would work in this day and age. However, my intention is to argue that Laura Mulvey’s thesis that the male gaze focuses on female objects only is partly outdated and that she left the female as a passive spectator, which is not true, because nowadays females are more active than males in terms of identification with their favourite stars on the screen. That identification can take on different levels starting with admiration because of looks, talent or taking them as role models which will furthermore end in consumption; may it be fashion, cosmetics or hairstyles.

The Female Gaze in Documentary Film – an International Perspective makes a timely contribution to the recent rise in interest in the status, presence, achievements and issues for women in contemporary screen industries. It examines the works, contributions and participation of female documentary directors globally. The central preoccupation of the book is to consider what might constitute a ‘female gaze’, an inquiry that has had a long history in filmmaking, film theory and women’s art. It fills a gap in the literature which to date has not substantially examined the work of female documentary directors. Moreover, research on sex, gender and the gaze has infrequently been the subject of scholarship on documentary film, particularly in comparison to narrative film or television drama. A distinctive feature of the book is that it is based on interviews with significant female documentarians from Europe, Asia and North America.

The female gaze is used by writers and readers to examine narratives from a perspective that sees women as subjects instead of objects, and the application of a female gaze to male-dominated discourses can open new avenues of interpretation. This book explores how female manga artists have encouraged the female gaze within their work and how female readers have challenged the male gaze pervasive in many forms of popular media. Each of the chapters offers a close reading of influential manga and fancomics to illustrate the female gaze as a mode of resistant reading and creative empowerment. By employing a female gaze, professional and amateur creators are able to shape and interpret texts in a manner that emphasizes the role of female characters while challenging and reconfiguring gendered themes and issues.

Frank but scathing in her remarks, Chatterji in this collection of essays voices those who have been muted but not silenced. She scrutinizes the intertwined fabric of social and financial milieu that determines a woman's place in society. Her observations on the systemic silence of women, the physical and mental abuse, the stereotypes that women are forced to live up to, are some of the many things that force you to stop and think. Ranging from issues that affect women and society to the representation of women in cinema, she goes through important societal issues one by one with a fine-tooth comb and analyses them through multiple lenses.

In The World Wars Through the Female Gaze, Jean Gallagher maps one portion of the historicized, gendered territory of what Nancy K. Miller calls the "gaze in representation." Expanding the notion of the gaze in critical discourse, Gallagher situates a number of visual acts within specific historic contexts to reconstruct the wartime female subject. She looks at both the female observer's physical act of seeing - and the refusal to see - for example, a battlefield, a wounded soldier, a torture victim, a national flag, a fashion model, a bombed city, or a wartime hallucination. Interdisciplinary in focus, this book brings together visual (twenty-two illustrations) and literary texts, "high" and "popular" expressive forms, and well-known and lesser-known figures and texts.

What is the female gaze and why is it important?Arts, entertainment, and culture have been defined through the male gaze for centuries. But things are rapidly changing. The question is not whether society is ready, but whether women themselves are ready to fully express what they see through their gaze - their unique perspective as women. The Female Gaze discusses how the female gaze differs from the male gaze in books and movies such as Star Wars, Fifty Shades of Grey, Nomadland, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Emily the Criminal, and The Woman King, and also examines slash, Japanese yaoi, and m/m romance as alternatives to traditional heteronormative romance stories.

The female gaze hasn't been dominant; as a concept in its infancy, it's harder to define, and it looks different than the male gaze. The female gaze looks at the world through a female's eyes. Given the understanding of the male gaze, the parallel assumption would be that the heterosexual female gaze focuses on the way men are seen, objectifies the male body, and uses male characters only to perpetuate the female characters' roles. This book features fantasy Art and poetry, with a female gaze. Why did Lilith really leave Adam? Was her choice to find magic and feminine energy worth all the condemnation? What is it like to be a woman who embodies feminism in the purest, most original sense? What is it like to be a woman immortalized for your sex? How can we love ourselves as women, without ridiculing the men in our lives? Can a woman choose to be seductive in the female gaze without being politically galvanized? Do we own our bodies? Do we own our magic?
