Crease is going back to his quaint, quiet hometown of Hangtree. It's where his father the sheriff met ruin in the face of a scandal involving the death of a kidnapped little girl and her missing ransom. It's where crease was beaten, jailed, and kicked clear of the town line ten years earlier. Now Crease is back. He's been undercover for so long that most days he feels more like a mobster than a cop. He doesn't mind much: the corrupt life is easier to stomach than a wife wh ocan't understand him, a son who hates him, and a half-dozen adopted kids he can't even name anymore. He's also just gotten his drug-dealing, knife-wielding psycho boss Tucco's mistress pregnant. A fine time to decide to settle odl scorers and resolve a decade-old mystery. With Tucco hot on his tail, Crease has to find his answers fast. Who kidnapped little mary? Who really killed her? Was his own father guilty? And what happened to the paltry fifteen grand ransom that seems to spell salvation to half the population of Hangtree? The town still has a taste for his blood and secrets it wants to keep. Crease has a single hope; a raw and raging fever driving him toward the truth that might just burn him up along the way.

The deepest evil, the most insidious manifestations of psychopathy, don't necessarily include murder. As the veteran exorcist Huw Owen tells Merrily Watkins, you don't need to kill to take a life. The River Wye, according to local folklore, takes a life every year. But it's a very long river and arguably the most scenic in Britain.

Excerpt from Ten Lectures Introductory to the Study of FeverThese then are the causes of fever. Now let us ask, What is fever Here you observe we are altogether casting aside any nominal fever. We are not speaking of scarlet fever, of typhus fever, and so on; we are taking fever in the general. I daresay you are all aware that fever has been attributed by different authors to local affections; by some to affec tion of the head; by some - the Broussaists I mean to an affection of the intestines. Certainly local diseases may produce a febrile state. We have seen that inflammation gives rise to fever; but this is not the fever of which we are now speaking. We speak now of idiopathic, or as some call it, essential fever; and there is no doubt whatever that idio pathic fever has a real existence, - that there is essential fever, - that there is fever which may kill a man without any local lesion whatever. There is not the least doubt of that. I have inspected the bodies of patients dying of typhus, and found no lesion whatever to which we could attribute the symptoms under which they laboured. Of course fever may become complicated; and in fatal cases it is probably for the most part complicated - with; affections of the lungs, of the bowels, of the throat.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book covers several areas, such as immunology, infectious diseases, physiology, general nursing, and medicine as well as measurement accuracy and the history of our understanding of fever. This book employs an interdisciplinary approach to exploring our concept of body temperature and specifically fever. The present volume revolves around thermometry, taking the reader on a journey from the past to the present. Yet while the emphasis is on the clinical importance of obtaining accurate, quantitative measurements of body temperature, the reader is also introduced to the most recent clinical work on the subject. This book represents a truly cross-disciplinary collaboration, using evidence-based practice to integrate physiological and immunological knowledge. The authors’ intention with this volume is to help readers gain better insight into the importance of using knowledge from different disciplines to develop an appreciation of the different aspects of body temperature. In addition, the reader will come to understand the concept of fever in a broader perspective than is traditionally adopted.

Since the dawn of medical science, people have recognized connections between a change in the weather and the appearance of epidemic disease. With today's technology, some hope that it will be possible to build models for predicting the emergence and spread of many infectious diseases based on climate and weather forecasts. However, separating the effects of climate from other effects presents a tremendous scientific challenge. Can we use climate and weather forecasts to predict infectious disease outbreaks? Can the field of public health advance from "surveillance and response" to "prediction and prevention?" And perhaps the most important question of all: Can we predict how global warming will affect the emergence and transmission of infectious disease agents around the world? Under the Weather evaluates our current understanding of the linkages among climate, ecosystems, and infectious disease; it then goes a step further and outlines the research needed to improve our understanding of these linkages. The book also examines the potential for using climate forecasts and ecological observations to help predict infectious disease outbreaks, identifies the necessary components for an epidemic early warning system, and reviews lessons learned from the use of climate forecasts in other realms of human activity.

Is lowering your temperature when you have a fever helpful? Do you really need to finish every course of antibiotics? Or could some of the treatments you think are healing you actually be harming you? Medicine has significantly advanced in the last few decades. But while we have learned a lot, we still rely on medical interventions that are vastly out of date and can adversely affect our health. In this game-changing book, infectious-disease expert and Rotavirus vaccine inventor Dr Offit highlights fifteen common medical interventions still recommended and practised by medical professionals, despite clear evidence that they are harmful — including the treatment of acid reflux in babies and the reliance on heart stents and knee surgery. By presenting medical alternatives, Overkill gives patients invaluable information to help them ask their doctors better questions and to advocate for their own health.
