The book reveals a phenomenological metaphysics, which places it at the cutting edge of contemporary work on phenomenology. It addresses the crisis of world that is all around us as the meaning structures relating to self, nature and divinity all seem to be undermined politically and socially within the current reality of climatic, geo-political and ideology turmoil. Divinity in Things: Religion without Myth provides a credible alternative to the so-called 'Western' religions, which all trace their ancestry to the Hebrew Yahweh, who was the first sky-god to divorce (or be divorced by) his earth-mother consort, so initiating the long separation of God from Nature, putting an end to the feeling of oneness with Nature that had typified primal forms of religion. The author goes back in time, beyond the gods and goddesses of natural forces to the natural forces themselves, and then to the earliest known god-concept, generally known as 'mana, ' translatable as 'energy' and denoting not only the forces of external nature, but also the creative powers of human beings. For 'mana, ' he substitutes the more familiar 'divinity' to depict the energy, presumed intelligence and rightness (beauty and goodness) of our universe. A central theme is that religion should be understood as a positive attitude, intellectual and emotional, towards Planet Earth and, by implication, the total cosmos of which we are, spiritually speaking, crucial and significant components. Since the whole universe is the product of energy combined with intelligence, we should put our trust in the rightness of the universe, the rightness of nature. Such an attitude includes an ethical element: if awareness of divinity within all things and therefore within ourselves is cause for positive and joyful self-appraisal, this awareness must be justified by responsible, constructive, and benign employment of our divine-human creativity. Divinity is present in all things, including ourselves. But human beings, who possess intelligence and also considerable freedom of choice, even presuming to know better than Nature, sometimes abuse these gifts with disastrous consequences. This book proposes lessons that humankind needs to take to heart. Geniuses of all kinds, the Einsteins, Bachs, Rembrandts, and Gandhis, whether believers or not, have received inspiration from their indwelling divinity. This message of trusting one's personal divinity has special relevance for today's troubled world.

The volume gathers together over twenty contributions that emerged from a conference held in in honour of Dermot Moran on the occasion of his retirement from University College Dublin. The book explores the contribution of phenomenology to empathy, intersubjectivity, affectivity, and the constitution of the cultural and social world, from both a historical and an applied philosophical perspective. No one theory of time is pursued in these essays, but a major theme that threads them together is Wolfson’s signature idea of the timeswerve as a linear circularity or a circular linearity, expressions that are meant to avoid the conventional split between the two temporal modalities of the line and the circle. The conception of time elicited by Wolfson from a host of philosophical and mystical sources—both Jewish and non-Jewish—buttresses the contention that it is precisely structural invariability that engenders interpretive variation. This hermeneutical axiom is justified, in turn, by the presumption regarding the cadence of time as the constant return of what has always been what is yet to be. The telling of time wells forth from the time of telling. One cannot speak of the being of time, consequently, except from the standpoint of the time of being, nor of the time of being except from the standpoint of the being of time.

Kant's Critique of Pure Reason lays the foundation of his Systematic Metaphysics published across a dozen works with the singular aim of 'fixing' the field by reconciling Rationalism, Idealism, and Empiricism to move Metaphysics into a full form of Science, much, in the same manner, the Greeks did to Logic or The Renaissance logicians to the hard sciences. Kant sparked a metaphysical revolution which he understands as akin to the Copernican revolution. The question of how the iterations of the transcendent 'I' through time and space can 'know' anything (make synthetic a priori judgments) with any level of certainty takes the proscenium in the Critique. David Hume's fundamental error in Kant's view is that he assumes a Rationality which is Techne without Telos, a description only of what is, not what should be. To this end, he uses a Greek conception of Rationality as logos within a Platonic Ontology, splitting reality into two subdivisions between form and sense- perception, between Numinal and a phenomenological world. As physics is pure science, metaphysics is pure philosophy; "Pure knowledge of reason from mere concepts is called pure philosophy, or metaphysics... Metaphysics, then, both of nature and of morals, and especially the critique of reason venturing out on its own wings, which precedes it in a propaedeutic way, are actually the only things that we can call philosophy in the true sense of the word".
