The novel that inspired Field of Dreams: "A lyrical, seductive, and altogether winning concoction." — The New York Times Book Review One of Sports Illustrated 's 100 Greatest Sports Books "If you build it, he will come." When Ray Kinsella hears these mysterious words spoken in the voice of an Iowa baseball announcer, he is inspired to carve a baseball diamond in his cornfield. It is a tribute to his hero, the legendary Shoeless Joe Jackson, whose reputation was forever tarnished by the scandalous 1919 World Series. What follows is a timeless story that is "not so much about baseball as it is about dreams, magic, life, and what is quintessentially American" ( The Philadelphia Inquirer). "A triumph of hope." — The Boston Globe "A moonlit novel about baseball, dreams, family, the land, and literature." — Sports Illustrated

"When Bob Salisbury and his wife Rosemary were nearing retirement, they moved back to County Tyrone from Nottinghamshire, bought a fifteen-acre site and started to build a house. `It was when we first spent time on the land we now owned that Rosemary asked whether I noticed anything odd. Eventually I gave up. There is no birdsong, she said. In terms of wildlife this land is barren. She was absolutely right.' This is the inspiring story of how the Salisburys - both enthusiastic but amateur gardeners - transformed an unloved rural wasteland into a thriving, renowned wildlife garden - home to lapwings, hares, yellowhammers, otters, woodcocks, bats and many other species that hadn't been seen in the area for years. 'The Field of Dreams' celebrates the Irish countryside and its wildlife with great warmth, humour and lightness of touch - and is a book that reminds us of the profound importance of maintaining a connection to the land."--

Federico Fellini is one of the most beloved and revered filmmakers of the twentieth century, having entertained audiences worldwide with his ability to breathe life into imagery normally confined to human memory and emotion. His insights into the world of dreams have contributed to his many famous cinematic creations, including La Dolce Vita, 8 1/2, and La Strada. A unique combination of memory, fantasy, and desire, this illustrated volume is a personal diary of Fellini's private visions and nighttime fantasies. Fellini, winner of four Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film, kept notebooks filled with unique sketches and notes from his dreams from the 1960s onward. This collection delves into his cinematic genius as it is captured in widely detailed caricatures and personal writings. This dream diary exhibits Fellini's deeply personal taste for the bizarre and the irrational. His sketches focus on the profound struggle of the soul and are tinged with humor, empathy, and insight. The real-life Moonlight Graham didn't play just a half-inning for John McGraw's New York Giants, as depicted in Field of Dreams. Neither did he retire from baseball after his lone major league appearance. Rather, he became a fan favorite during a noteworthy professional career, all the while juggling baseball with medical residencies.

100 years of Wembley Stadium told through 100 matches. Hundreds of thousands of fans, 5,000 were on the pitch, and a horse called Billy. That was the scene for the inauspicious first football match to be played at the British Empire Exhibition Stadium back in 1923, soon to be known as Wembley. More than a century later, Wembley remains the world's most famous football stadium. Watching your team there is the highlight of a fan's lifetime of support; playing on its hallowed turf the fulfilment of a childhood dream. Nige Tassell chooses 100 matches that have shaped Wembley's legacy - from England's triumphs in World Cup and Euros tournaments to groundbreaking women's matches and various non-league finals, by way of greyhounds, stunt motorcycles and the feet of 72,000 music fans at Live Aid - and tells a lively and original alternative history of the past century of football, and of Britain. Field of Dreams is the story of how football found its home.

The Hero And The Perennial Journey Home In American Film written by Susan Mackey-Kallis and has been published by University of Pennsylvania Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-08-03 with Social Science categories.

In contemporary America, myths find expression primarily in film. What's more, many of the highest-grossing American movies of the past several decades have been rooted in one of the most fundamental mythic narratives, the hero quest. Why is the hero quest so persistently renewed and retold? In what ways does this universal myth manifest itself in American cinema? And what is the significance of the popularity of these modern myths? The Hero and the Perennial Journey Home in American Film by Susan Mackey-Kallis is an exploration of the appeal of films that recreate and reinterpret this mythic structure. She closely analyzes such films as E.T., the Star Wars trilogy, It's a Wonderful Life, The Wizard of Oz, The Lion King, Field of Dreams, The Piano, Thelma and Louise, and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Elements of the quest mythology made popular by Joseph Campbell, Homer's Odyssey, the perennial philosophy of Aldous Huxley, and Jungian psychology all contribute to the compelling interpretive framework in which Mackey-Kallis crafts her study. She argues that the purpose of the hero quest is not limited to the discovery of some boon or Holy Grail, but also involves finding oneself and finding a home in the universe. The home that is sought is simultaneously the literal home from which the hero sets out and the terminus of the personal growth he or she undergoes during the journey back. Thus the quest, Mackey-Kallis asserts, is an outward journey into the world of action and events which eventually requires a journey inward if the hero is to grow, and ultimately necessitates a journey homeward if the hero is to understand the grail and share it with the culture at large. Finally, she examines the value of mythic criticism and addresses questions about myth currently being debated in the field of communication studies.
