Polemic Paper from the year 2018 in the subject Sport - Sport Economics, Sport Management, grade: 1, , language: English, abstract: Football on the field has always been associated with ethereal beauty. As such, FIFA World Cup provides an opportunity to billions of spectators to reap the benefits of fun-making, a phenomenon that seems to be associated with social satisfaction. On the other hand, this international sporting event creates an opportunity for entrepreneurs, as well as the host countries to reap the related economic benefits. This implies that FIFA World Cup plays significant social and economic roles. Despite the benefits related to this international sporting event, it appears that Qatar, the host of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, might loss its fortune owing to the ambiguity surrounding the event, including the bidding process and suitability of the country. This is why it is suggested that FIFA should “change its World Cup vote procedures to ensure fairness and transparency” (Becker, 2013, p. 133). It is argued that the choosing Qatar as the host of 2022 FIFA World Cup was a surprise. This is evidenced by remarks that “the bestowment of the hosting privilege was a shock to many people worldwide; most news analysts thought the country didn’t stand a chance” (Beydoun & Baum, 2012 p. 12). Therefore, this argumentative essay will justify the existence of ambiguity behind Qatar’s hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Communications - Intercultural Communication, grade: 1,3, University of applied sciences, Cologne, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this paper is to give the reader an understanding of two very contrary cultures, Germany's and Thailand's, in order to help preventing cultural misunderstandings when working together. At first, an explanation of the word "culture" will be given, although, so far, there has not yet been one exact definition all scientists approve of. After giving some general information about the two countries, a comparison will be drawn between Germany and Thailand based on two individual theories of so-called "Cultural Dimensions" put forward by the scientists Edward T. Hall and Fons Trompenaars. Additionally, the reader will find a brief elaboration of suggestions on how the two cultures may approach one another to lay potential differences aside. Thus, the aim of this paper is pointing out possibilities to enable business to develop further and that the people from these two countries will find it easier to cooperate in the future.

Whether it’s bungee jumping in Queenstown or visiting the Guinness factory in Dublin, where we travel – and what we do when we get there - has changed significantly in the past twenty years. This innovative textbook explores what is possibly the most unrecognized of international service industries, placing tourism in the context of contemporary globalization and trade-in services. It provides new perspectives on tourism as a form of international business, and the implications for firms, the state and individuals. Split into four separate sections, with introductions outlining the key themes in each, it examines important topics such as: the role of governance and regulation in tourism services the effects of increased global mobility on tourism entrepreneurship how tourism businesses are becoming internationalized why other business sectors are increasingly interested in tourism. Case studies are used throughout to highlight important issues, from developments in the aviation industry to the rise of working holidays. This book gets to the core of a crucial service industry, and is essential reading for any researcher or student of tourism or international business.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Tourism, grade: 2,0, University of Cooperative Education Ravensburg, language: English, abstract: Tourism is the most superficial way of an intercultural encounter1 and one of the biggest industrial sectors in the world. “The WTTC (World Travel and Tourism Council) estimates that over 230 million jobs in world are supported by the tourism industry, which equates to 8.3 per cent of total global employment, or one in every 12 jobs.”2 Furthermore, the latest statistics from 2008 show that tourism has not reached its peak yet. Over 80 countries earned more than € 642 billion through international tourism in 2008, while in 1990 it had only been € 207 billion.3 Another statistic representing and pointing up the booming tendency is the one showing the international tourist arrivals: while there had only been 25 million arrivals in 1950, the number constantly rose to 922 million in 2008 and by 2020 1.6 billion international tourist arrivals are expected.4 With so many tourists spending time abroad every year it is a logical consequence that different culture groups meet. From time to time, people may spend two weeks in Turkey, Dubai, Cancun or on Bali. This unfortunately might happen without the people even getting the local culture rudimentarily. But if they try to get to know the local culture, difficulties may occur. It is not only the language which is different and causes troubles and misunderstandings in communication; attitudes and the way people think vary greatly. Tourists often do not prepare themselves properly for their stays abroad; just reading a travel guide may not be sufficient at all. When going abroad people need to be aware of different behavioural rules and patterns. But not only tourists have to face this problem. In the tourism industry many people work abroad which not only leads to multicultural teams but also to misunderstandings going back to cultural differences. These groups, both tourists and employees, need to face their upcoming cultural communication challenges. Communication is an important and indispensible commodity; especially in the tourism industry conversations and interpersonal contact are trivial. Imagine a city tour or a checkout without a single word spoken. According to scientific investigations on interpersonal communications in the economy, managers spend 70% of their daily labour time with communicating.5 Due to the increasing internationalisation and globalisation of the tourism industry, the effects of intercultural relations on human resource management need to be taken into consideration.
