Would you be willing to give up all aspects of your public religion for peace on Earth? Is God dead, and man abandoned to his own fate, or is help coming? How much longer will the universe leave us on our own? Do you care what modern mathematics and physics are doing to your everyday reality? Can the human genome be reprogrammed like your laptop computer? This is the story of God returning to earth and choosing a scientist as his next prophet. As at any time in the history of the world, everyday events and global chaos intermingle. Why now? Is God angry enough to bring fire, and nuclear destruction? Is God choosing new believers and giving them a technological rainbow? The Family of Man survives and prospers through war, pestilence, personal dangers, and the Second Dark Ages. Will they succeed and go to the stars, or will the world turn on them? Much of the 'action' is intellectual, mathematical, religious, genetic, political, astronomical, but some people will die bloody deaths. Begin with the first Theorem of the New Deists: Religion is fundamentally evil, and God does not approve of it. Follow the Fifth Prophet and his Family of Man as they attempt to build a new Eden on Earth.

The fifth meeting of the Edinburgh prophecy network focussed on the presence of prophets and prophecy in narrative texts. The papers in this volume scrutinize the image of prophecy through the analysis of narrative processes. The papers deal with a great time span: from the Hittite Empire, via the Hebrew Bible, Judaism and Islam, up to the early Modern Period. Although all sorts of variations could be detected - especially due to the variety of temporal contexts, some features are recurring especially in view of the anthropological phenomenon of prophecy and its function in narratives.

There is currently much interest in the history of interpretation, reader-response and the sociology of sacred texts - in what the text does as much as what it means. Isaiah, 'more evangelist than prophet' according to Jerome and others, provides an ideal case study, because of his profound influence on the language and imagery of Christianity. With illustrations from art, music, literature and the media as well as commentaries, sermons and official church pronouncements, Professor Sawyer shows how Isaiah has been used in all kinds of context, from the cult of the Virgin Mary, mediaeval passion iconography and antisemitic propaganda to Christian feminism and liberation theology. This first attempt at a comprehensive critical study of an essential part of biblical interpretation will provide a model for further research, and ensure that commentaries will never be the same again.

Excerpt from The Prophets of Israel: From the Eighth to the Fifth Century; Their Faith and Their Message There is perhaps, at the present day, no subject of biblical study which possesses more interest for the lay public than Prophecy, a fact which must be most gratifying to writers on this subject, though it carries with it one serious difficulty. For there is also probably no subject of biblical study which engages the attention of the specialists to the extent that Prophecy does; and a presentation which would fill the needs of the one class of readers would hardly meet the requirements of the other. I cannot claim to have solved this difficulty. I am aware that there are parts of the present volume which the lay reader may prefer to pass over, and that there are other parts which may seem commonplace to the scholar, but I believe that this is almost inevitable in the present stage of biblical criticism. The general reader will probably find the first and the last chapter most readable, as these were originally lectures delivered before a lay audience, the first as an exposition of the Faith of the Prophets, the second as an exposition of their Message. These lectures, which were delivered in Albany, N. Y. in January, 1910, at the request of my friend and former pupil, Rev. S. H. Goldenson, I was strongly urged to publish at the time. They are here substantially unchanged, though the second has been necessarily somewhat enlarged. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
