Occurring in a time of primitive medicine and inconsistent record-keeping, Poe’s death has become one of the enduring mysteries of American literature. David F. Gaylin’s book marks the first attempt to offer a comprehensive and balanced study of this historical event. After chronicling the circumstances that may have contributed to the poet’s death, the book examines key details about the story. It traces Poe’s movements and personal encounters before also exploring how Poe was handled and treated by others who attempted to come to his aid. Proceeding with the liveliness of a detective story, the discussion sheds new light on these events, and it offers new information about the burial of Poe’s body and the subsequent relocations of his tomb. With the addition of supplementary reference materials including a register of formally proposed causes of death, a timeline of relevant events, and a map of Poe’s final movements in Baltimore, this book is an essential resource for both scholars and general readers seeking answers to the mystery of Poe’s death.

"The death of a beautiful woman is unquestionably the most poetical topic in the world." - Edgar Allan Poe In late 1830s, Poe published Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque, a collection of stories. It contained several of his most spine-tingling tales, including "The Fall of the House of Usher," "Ligeia" and "William Wilson." Poe launched the new genre of detective fiction with 1841's "The Murders in the Rue Morgue." A writer on the rise, he won a literary prize in 1843 for "The Gold Bug," a suspenseful tale of secret codes and hunting treasure. Poe became a literary sensation in 1845 with the publication of the poem "The Raven." It is considered a great American literary work and one of the best of Poe's career. In the work, Poe explored some of his common themes-death and loss. An unknown narrator laments the demise of his great love Lenore. That same year, he found himself under attack for his stinging criticisms of his fellow poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Poe claimed that Longfellow, a widely popular literary figure, was a plagiarist, and this written assault on Longfellow created a bit of backlash for Poe. Continuing work in different forms, Poe examined his own methodology and writing in general in several essays, including "The Philosophy of Composition," "The Poetic Principle" and "The Rationale of Verse." He also produced another thrilling tale, "The Cask of Amontillado," and poems such as "Ulalume" and "The Bells." Mysterious Death Poe was overcome by grief after the death of his beloved Virginia in 1847. While he continued to work, he suffered from poor health and struggled financially. His final days remain somewhat of a mystery. He left Richmond on September 27, 1849, and was supposedly on his way to Philadelphia. On October 3, Poe was found in Baltimore in great distress. He was taken to Washington College Hospital where he died on October 7. His last words were "Lord, help my poor soul." Edgar Allan Poe lies dying in a Baltimore hospital. The fever possessing his imagination transports him to the darkest regions of his haunted universe, where he commands the inexorable cataclysm of all that he has created. C. Auguste Dupin, Poe's own detective, races against time to locate and free his creator from the Imp of the Perverse, while the dark and lovely Lenore struggles to withstand the forces drawing her to dissolution. Fleeing the chains of slavery, Lenore and her lover, Danton Reynolds, are guided by Dupin. Their story must win release from a fate otherwise awaiting it in this, the last narrative of Edgar Allan Poe. Poe Man's Poe :Lenore Enters the Twilight Zone Just what cataclysmic failure of mind and body could have befallen the marvelous Edgar Allan Poe in the tormented days between September 27 and October 7, 1949, when the poet died raving and inconsolable with the name "Reynolds" on his lips? In this slightly hallucinogenic telling, Poe teams up with Rod Sterling to create a "final narrative" worthy of the Twilight Zone. Whether Scottsville resident Frank Lovelock, a PVCC English professor, will manage to disengage his own head and send it spinning in a black-and-white vortex while he reads from his new novel, Lenore, on November 4, he clearly is after that effect. His tale, which he characterizes as "a labor of love for Poe," begins with the master of macabre already in the throes of paranoid delusion. Haunted by the thoughts of his beloved cousin and bride-to-be, Poe is staggering about Richmond on the eve of his fateful departure north. Lurching from bad company to worse, Poe soon finds himself drugged, mesmerized, and locked in a coffin. It appears that the writer is to be brought down by his very own literary ghouls. Meanwhile, a love story is in full bloom, and an escape is in train. Mixed identities morph with phantom characters, and Poe's own creation, the detective C. August Dupin is dispatched to save Poe and the hapless lovers from, well, what's the worst that can befall ill-fated folk in the snares of the surreal? Lovelock's Poe scholarship is meted out in faithful passages of poetry, philosophy, and shrieking dismay, His hard-pressed inventions (fair skinned fugitive slaves who are the spitting image of Poe and his beloved meet some Oliver Twist's tormentors who have apparently made a wrong turn) are somehow neutralized by Lovelock's carefully reproduced style of the mid-19th century novel (in which aforementioned Reynolds urges Poe to take nourishment, but the poet declines "unable to command equilibrium"). Just as Poe himself would undertake the telling of Lenore picks up pace page by page, like a possessed metronome or yes, a tell-tale heart. As the narration passes from Poe to the slave Lenore to the desperate Danton Reynolds, the spiral of illusion wraps tighter and tighter, locking the principals and their shadowy counterparts in a dance the Poe himself is calling. At the finale even the raven appears and Edgar Allan Poe, true to history, dies a loathsome death in a Baltimore hospital. The official cause of death is rabies.

Edgar Allan Poe's death remains a mystery even today. There are many theories as to what killed him. Some people believe Poe's death was caused by suicide, some believe murder, others consider cholera to be the leading factor, or hypoglycaemia, rabies, syphilis and even influenza. Whatever happened to him, Poe was found in a delirious state and wearing clothes believed to be belonging to someone else. In the days before his death, he was heard to be calling out for Reynolds, a man to which no one knew of Poe's connection. This book does not tell you the truth in what happened to Poe. That will remain, forever, a mystery. What this book does is bring together some of the biggest names in horror - from the mind behind the horror anthologies Masters Of Horror and NEXT DOOR - to tell THEIR version of what happened to Poe in his final moments. Expect gore, expect black humour, expect sex, expect violence, double-crossing and murder most foul... Expect pure fiction as we let our imaginations run riot.

Baltimore, 1849. The body of Edgar Allan Poe has been buried in an unmarked grave. The conclusion that Poe was a second-rate writer who died a drunkard is accepted by all. But none of this deters Quentin Clark, an ardent admirer who risks his own career and reputation in a passionate crusade to salvage Poe's. Clark discovers that Poe's last days are riddled with vital unanswered questions. But just when Poe's death looks destined to remain a mystery, Quentin seeks out the one person who can solve this strange case: the real-life model for Poe's brilliant fictional detective character, C. Auguste Dupin. Having successfully recruited the man he believes to have inspired Poe's Dupin, Clarke is confronted by another claiming to be the true model. The two master detectives each seek to prove he is the real 'Dupin' by solving the mystery of Poe's death. Clark finds himself enmeshed in sinister machinations involving international political agents, a female assassin, the corrupt Baltimore slave trade and the lost secrets of Poe's final hours. With his own future hanging in the balance, he must turn master investigator himself to unchain his now imperilled fate from that of Poe.
