If there is such a thing as reason, it has to be universal. Reason must reflect objective principles whose validity is independent of our point of view--principles that anyone with enough intelligence ought to be able to recognize as correct. But this generality of reason is what relativists and subjectivists deny in ever-increasing numbers. And such subjectivism is not just an inconsequential intellectual flourish or badge of theoretical chic. It is exploited to deflect argument and to belittle the pretensions of the arguments of others. The continuing spread of this relativistic way of thinking threatens to make public discourse increasingly difficult and to exacerbate the deep divisions of our society. In The Last Word, Thomas Nagel, one of the most influential philosophers writing in English, presents a sustained defense of reason against the attacks of subjectivism, delivering systematic rebuttals of relativistic claims with respect to language, logic, science, and ethics. He shows that the last word in disputes about the objective validity of any form of thought must lie in some unqualified thoughts about how things are--thoughts that we cannot regard from outside as mere psychological dispositions.

“I was the one to be called upon in the night for reasons I do not know and compelled to follow my God through places I could never have imagined. I would become a part of something so overwhelmingly grotesque and foul but, yet, laden with such beauty and power that I could not look away.” The Final Word begins with Jenny Taylor’s midnight prayer for her father’s salvation and expands into an intricately woven story of murder, fraught family history, and dangerous confrontations with family and strangers. Jenny not only ends up face-to-face with her dad’s murderer in a Tennessee courthouse, but through a humbling experience she is also called to forgive the man who brutally took her father’s life. This memoir is rich with bold characters, Southern roots, and unforgettable events that expose the horrors and glory of this tale.

Author Jim Edwards is well-grounded in the Christian faith, a gift facilitated by his grandparents beginning early in his life. In The Final Word, he shares his experiences and ideas about the Christian faith, using personal anecdotes and third-party stories to illustrate how God works in the lives of the faithful. He explores some of the obligations and responsibilities of Christians and illustrates how to find comfort and guidance in the Bible. Edwards offers a rational approach to develop a thought-based comprehension of who God is, who we are, why we are here, and where we go when we leave earth. The Final Word challenges Christians to think about their relationship with God using unique and interesting simulated dialogues between the author, God, and a friend. These scenarios draw a clearer understanding of the word of God and show that God has the final word on the whereabouts of mankind in eternity. Featuring a simulated interview with God, The Final Word explores an array of mysteries such as the Tree of Life and Gods Mathematical Laws.

Set in Pacific City, a fictional southern California town nationally recognized for its safety. A promiscuous teenager is murdered: suspects include a respected football coach, family members, an escaped convict and a high school student planning to replicate the Columbine massacre. A white supremacist group within the police department intent on furthering its racist agenda inhibits the investigation, led by a former Marine hero. The murdered girl was seeing a therapist for treatment of a sex addiction. Her promiscuity, revealed in her diary and exposed on a homemade sex tape, led to her murder. The lead detective on the case, a widower, falls in love with one of his subordinates who, unknown to him, an undercover FBI agent is sent to investigate the racist cops in the department. Their budding relationship is derailed when she is slain by one of the racist cops leading him to exact revenge outside of the justice system in a manner reminiscent of how he gained Marine Corps fame as "The Ghost." The Gaudiya Vaisnava movement is one of the most vibrant religious groups in all of South Asia. Unlike most devotional communities that flourished in 15th-, 16th-, and 17th-century Bengal, however, the group had no formal founder. Today its devotees are uniform in their devotion to the historical figure of Krishna Caitanya (1486-1533), whom they believe to be not just Krishna incarnate, but Radha and Krishna fused into a single androgynous form. But Caitanya neither founded the community that coalesced around him nor named a successor. Tony Stewart seeks to discover how, with no central leadership, no institutional authority, and no geographic center, a religious community nevertheless comes to successfully define itself, fix its canon and flourish. He finds the answer in the brilliant hagiographical exercise in Sanskrit and Bengali titled the Caitanya Caritamrita (CC) of Krishnadasa Kaviraja.

From Canada's foremost graveyard historian comes the first-ever collection of Canadian epitaphs. Strange as it is to say, graveyards are historical documents; they have a lot to say about who we were--and who we are. From the strange and humorous to the majestic and moving, the baldly factual (Horses ran away) to the possibly fantastical (Milicent Milroy, A. M. M. M. / Wife of Edward VIII / Duke of Windsor / 1894-1972), the wildly famous to the completely anonymous, The Final Word chronicles the little-travelled terrain of Canadian grave words with wit, grace, humour, and a fine sense of what a bittersweet thing it is to be mortal.
