Excerpt from The First Greek Book Since the publication of my Beginner's Greek Book in 1892, I have from time to time had letters from teachers in different parts of the country, who have informed me that the Beginner's Book, because of its length, was not well adapted for use in the schools in which they taught, and who have urged me to prepare a briefer book on the same plan. They wished a book, they said, which could be completed in two terms, and which would properly prepare their pupils for the rapid but exact reading of a book of the Anabasis during the last third of the year. The First Greek Book is an attempt to meet this reasonable request. I am aware that it is impossible that any elementary book should be equally well adapted to the needs of all schools but I have at least succeeded in making this book briefer than its immediate predecessor. In writing it I have aimed to give, first, only such fundamental facts of Greek grammar as the young pupil must know before he can begin to read the connected narrative of Xenophon intelligently and with pleasure, and secondly, a moderate amount of practice, both in reading and in writing, in the application of these principles. I have entirely excluded from the eighty lessons into which the First Greek Book is divided the Attic second declension, the systematic treatment of the affinity of words, word lists, word groups, the principles of word formation, and the divi sion of verbs into eight classes, although provision is made for the study of some of these important matters, if the teacher finds the time for it, in the materials furnished in the Appendix. Further. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from First Greek Book: On the Plan of First Latin Book IN presenting a new and improved edition of the first greek Boox, the American Editor takes great pleasure in acknowledging the very gratifying success of the Arnold Series, as issued under his supervision. He has not spared labor on his part, nor have the Publishers expense on their's, to render the various volumes of the series even still more worthy of the confidence and support of the public; and he ventures to express the Opinion that the present First Greek Book will be found to be admirably adapted to the ground ing of the young student in the fundamea principles of the noble language of Greece, as well as a very considerable improvement on former editions of the same book. Excerpt from First Greek Book: On the Plan of the First Latin Book It may not be deemed amiss here to say, that the educa tional works of Mr. Arnold require activity and energy on the part of the teacher as well as the scholar. They are not meant to supersede the necessity of a competent and faithful instructor, who can take occasion to enlarge upon, render more full (as boys now and then need), and impress upon his classes, the admirably arranged and clearly and logically drawn out course of instruction contained in these volumes. On the contrary, the teacher must be active and hard-work ing as well as his boys: if he be so, it is really surprising how rapid and yet how solid is their progress if he be not, this as well as every other good school-book will be of com paratively little servme In carrying forward the student to ward the goal of his wishes and his efforts. It ought not to be necessary, in these days, to remind any one that there is no royal road to learning, and that the best of books and best of systems will not make thorough scholars, without good teachers, and studious, hard-working pupils. Excerpt from Deigma: A First Greek Book In the third place, recent philological work has thrown so much clear light on many perplexing points in Greek that it seemed unfair, even to the beginner, not to allow him in the notes more frequent glimpses at the original meaning of the forms and their uses than was possible in the case of Latin. These notes are in smaller type and may be omitted on a first reading, save as the teacher may direct. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from First Greek Grammar Greek Course of which this First Greek Grammar should be the starting point. The aim of the new series is to bring into the fore ground the great main lines of Greek accidence and syntax, in short to teach the regular and ordinary modes of expres sion in use at the time when the most precise of languages had reached its highest precision. Accordingly it was necos sary carefully to revise the Grammar if it was to take its proper place in the series. I have to acknowledge a great deal of very generous and valued help, not only from my colleagues and friends, but also from many others who in using the book had detected errors or observed ways of improving it. More especially I have to thank my colleague Mr. Heard for many suggestions and much assistance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
