The teacher using this book can teach by any method which he may prefer ; but the experience of many years has convinced us that a judicious combination of the word and phonic methods is the best. It makes the shortest step from the known to the unknown ; it makes the pupil independent of the aid of the teacher sooner than any other. As a preparation for the reading-exercises, we would provoke the children to use in conversation the new words which are to be found at the head of each reading-lesson ; from which words, again, we would derive the new sounds which are about to claim special notice in the succeeding lesson or lessons.

Reading-Literature: First Reader uses well-written folk tales, Mother Goose rhymes, and poetry to teach reading basics. The simple style of the stories and rhymes allows children to read for themselves right away. First Reader is part of the Reading-Literature Series by Harriette Treadwell and Margaret Free published by Living Books Press. The series challenges the notion that learning to read is a matter of word repetition and phonic drill. Learning to read is an easy road when using literature that captures the child's interest. Reading-Literature: First Reader is a republication of the 1911 edition. Living Books Press has taken care to faithfully reproduce the type and illustrations of the original. The book includes guidelines for phonics instruction and vocabulary building coordinated with Reading-Literature Teacher's Guide: To accompany The Primer and First and Second Reader.

This is the first volume to consider the popular literary category of Early Readers – books written and designed for children who are just beginning to read independently. It argues that Early Readers deserve more scholarly attention and careful thought because they are, for many younger readers, their first opportunity to engage with a work of literature on their own, to feel a sense of mastery over a text, and to experience pleasure from the act of reading independently. Using interdisciplinary approaches that draw upon and synthesize research being done in education, child psychology, sociology, cultural studies, and children’s literature, the volume visits Early Readers from a variety of angles: as teaching tools; as cultural artifacts that shape cultural and individual subjectivity; as mass produced products sold to a niche market of parents, educators, and young children; and as aesthetic objects, works of literature and art with specific conventions. Examining the reasons such books are so popular with young readers, as well as the reasons that some adults challenge and censor them, the volume considers the ways Early Readers contribute to the construction of younger children as readers, thinkers, consumers, and as gendered, raced, classed subjects. It also addresses children’s texts that have been translated and sold around the globe, examining them as part of an increasingly transnational children’s media culture that may add to or supplant regional, ethnic, and national children’s literatures and cultures. While this collection focuses mostly on books written in English and often aimed at children living in the US, it is important to acknowledge that these Early Readers are a major US cultural export, influencing the reading habits and development of children across the globe.

Excerpt from The American School Readers: First Reader The american school first reader is planned as the children's second reading book. It assumes that they can read the usual vocabulary of a good primer, either of this series or of any other. It is, however, closely related to the American School Primer. The children and their pets, whose acquaintance was made in that book, appear again here, with new experiences, in the earlier pages. But the keynote of the book is children's lore. The characters of the primer appear less and less frequently and finally drop out altogether. The latter part of the book contains children's literature only. The authors believe that this literature is of so excel lent a quality that it will intensify the interest of chil dren in the reading book, and hence in learning to read, and will also implant the seeds of good literary taste. Carefully organized lists of words for phonic drill are given on pages 135 - 137. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A First Reader: Designed to Teach Animated, Expressive, Oral Reading There is no break between the Primer and First Reader of this series. To make the transition from one book to the other very simple and easy, the last thirty new words introduced into the Primer are used in the first twenty pages of the First Reader in new combinations. Thus the same vocabulary is being used, but the words are in entirely new relations. This makes the bridge between the Primer and First Reader very easy to cross. The vocabulary is carried on through the first half of the book in connection with subjects suited to arouse the active interest of children. The form of the stories then changes, but without the slightest break in the grading of the vocabulary. The second part consists of a simple, connected story of a kitten, called The Life of Snowball. It is arranged in this form so that the children may be gradually led from short, simple statements of inter esting objects and actions to the smooth, easy sentence forms of the Second Reader. The next part of the book is in still a different form. It couples the play idea of the dolls with the true home life of the children themselves. Here alsothe vocabulary is drawn wholly from Objects familiar to children in their own homes, thus making the inter est vital and keen. Each doll is mistress of a certain room in the doll house, and a simple title to each story forms another step toward the appreciation of the Second Reader. This reader closes with a short series of stories called The Boys' Club, which will be found especially interesting to boys of the First Reader age. The vocabulary is developed in the same careful way to the very end of the book. As in the Primer, the new words are found at the head of each lesson. The First Reader and Primer stand as com panion books in aim and method and so close is the relation of one to the other, that the First Reader needs the support of the Primer to round out the course as planned. Note. While there are words in this book, there are only 255 new words. There are 32 words carried over from the Primer, which makes 287 fundamental words altogether. Since Expressive Oral Reading is the aim of this series, the advantages of the limited vocabulary will readily appear.
