It was an age without GPS and the Internet, without high-tech monitoring and instantaneous reporting. And it was a time when women simply didn t do such things. None of this deterred Sharon Sites Adams. In June 1965 Adams made history as the first woman to sail solo from the mainland United States to Hawaii. Four years later, just as Neil Armstrong very publicly stepped onto the moon, the diminutive Adams, alone and unobserved, finally sighted Point Arguello, California, after seventy-four days sailing a thirty-one-foot ketch from Japan, across the violent and unpredictable Pacific. She was the first woman to do so, setting another world record. Inspiring and exciting, Adams s memoir recounts the personal path leading to her historic achievements: a tomboy childhood in the Oregon high desert, an early marriage and painful divorce, and a second marriage that ended when her husband died of cancer. In the wake of his death and almost by accident, Adams discovered sailing. Six weeks after her first sailing lesson she bought a boat, and within eight months she set out to achieve her first world record. Pacific Lady recounts the inward journey that paralleled her sailing feats, as Adams drew on every scrap of courage and navigational skill she could muster to overcome the seasickness, exhaustion, and loneliness that marked her harrowing crossings.

Phillip Winters is a computer guy with a dream to set sail. His lawyer wife Lucy only half shares his vision but begrudgingly follows Phillip to their first sailing class in the sailing capital of America, Annapolis, MD. She excels, while he falls behind. Setting out to find the perfect boat, whether his wife approves or not, Phillip finds a storm-ravaged boat and gets in over his head, much to his wife's disapproval. They move to Beaufort, NC, and fix up the derelict vessel without having the first clue of how to fix a boat or even how to sail for that matter. They quickly realize that it is a task they are ill-equipped to handle, and one which they lack the experience or know-how to tackle. Thankfully, like so many who have gone before them, they have the financial means to push forward, even if they should run away. A brief stay in a town that resembles a third-world banana republic and a run-in with what all Southerners affectionately call “water bugs”, they manage to launch their dream boat and set sail after a rum-soaked christening in Oriental, the sailing capital of North Carolina. Bumping down the coast to Florida, hopping from port to port, the couple experiences the highs and lows of the live-aboard lifestyle, including surprise expenses, sweaty nights on the high seas, and morally questionable port adventures with fellow boat owners. The Sailboat is a cautionary tale about boat ownership and relationships and demonstrates to those who are dreaming of ditching their COVID cocoon by heading out on the high seas that the live-aboard life is rarely smooth sailing.

Over The Top written by Adrian Flanagan and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-03-08 with Sports & Recreation categories.

Only one person has ever sailed vertically around the world - Adrian Flanagan. Sailing horizontally is difficult enough, crossing thousands of miles of ocean only to get near land at the Capes and battle treacherous currents. However, hundreds of sailors have still managed it. Adrian became obsessed with the idea of sailing vertically around the world as a boy, before he even knew whether it was possible. Thirty years later he managed it. This is his own account of his remarkable adventure. It was an epic challenge, sailing through the perilous waters around Cape Horn and across the remote, hostile stretch of the Russian Arctic. He survived being washed overboard, capsizing, a close encounter with pirates, and also managed to treat not one but two dislocated wrists - all of this alone, a thousand miles or more from anyone who could help him complete his quest. It wasn't all high drama, however. Adrian experienced moments of awe-inspiring beauty - being accompanied by a pod of whales, and swimming with dolphins. This is a timeless and unique story, pacily written with a sense of humour, but which captures the zeal and determination required to accomplish something nobody else has ever done before.

Joshua Slocum's epic solo voyage around the world in 1895 in the 37 foot sloop Spray stands as one of the greatest sea adventures of all time. It remains one of the major feats of singlehanded voyaging, and has since been the inspiration for the many who have gone to sea in small boats. Starting from Boston in 1895, by the time he dropped anchor in Newport, Rhode Island over three years after his journey began, he had cruised some 46,000 miles entirely by sail and entirely alone. Slocum's account of his epic voyage is a classic of sailing literature, acclaimed as an unequalled masterpiece of vital yet disciplined prose. It will be welcomed by admirers of his legendary achievement. 'It is a timeless work that can be read again and again, and a story that totally absorbs the reader with it's enormity and honest endeavour' RNSA Journal 'Slocum's prose is a model of its kind: honest, vivid, salty, and at times, lyrical' Traditional Boats and Tall Ships 'One of the all-time classic sailing narratives' Classic Boat
