The Five Classics associated with Confucius formed the core curriculum in the education of Chinese literati throughout most of the imperial period. In this book Michael Nylan offers a sweeping assessment of these ancient texts and shows how their influence spread across East Asia. Nylan begins by tracing the formation of the Five Classics canon in the pre-Han and Han periods, 206 B.C.–A.D. 220, revising standard views on the topic. She assesses the impact on this canon of the invention of a rival corpus, the Four Books, in the twelfth century. She then analyzes each of the Five Classics, discussing when they were written, how they were transmitted and edited in later periods, and what political, historical, and ethical themes were associated with them through the ages. Finally she deliberates on the intertwined fates of Confucius and the Five Classics over the course of the twentieth century and shows how the contents of the Five Classics are relevant to much newer concerns.

The Five Classics, a foundational text within the Confucian canon, comprises essential works that shaped Chinese thought and cultural values. These texts'Äîincluding the Yijing (Book of Changes), Shijing (Book of Songs), Shangshu (Book of Documents), Liji (Book of Rites), and Chunqiu (Spring and Autumn Annals)'Äîdemonstrate a distinctive literary style characterized by aphorisms, poetry, and historical narrative. Set against the backdrop of the tumultuous Spring and Autumn period, these classics reflect not only the philosophical inquiries of Confucius but also the socio-political realities of his time, advocating for moral integrity and virtuous governance within a hierarchical society. Confucius (Kong Fuzi), an influential philosopher and educator, dedicated his life to elucidating ethical leadership and the importance of harmonious social relations. His teachings emphasize the cultivation of virtue through education and the reverence for tradition, features starkly present in The Five Classics. The compilation of these texts represents his commitment to preserving and transmitting wisdom from prior generations while adapting it to address contemporary societal issues. The Five Classics is essential reading for anyone interested in East Asian philosophy, cultural history, or political ethics. Its timeless principles offer profound insights into governance and human relationships, making it a relevant work for both scholars and general readers alike who seek to understand the origins of moral thought in Chinese civilization.

Five Classics Of Fengshui written by Michael Paton and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-17 with Philosophy categories.

In Five Classics of Fengshui Michael Paton traces the theoretical development of this form of spiritual geography through full translations of major texts: the Burial Classic of Qing Wu, Book of Burial, Yellow Emperor’s Classic of House Siting, Twenty Four Difficult Problems, and Water Dragon Classic. This theoretical development is analysed through the lens of history, philosophy and sociology of science in an attempt to address Joseph Needham’s conundrum of the "great beauty of the siting" in traditional China being based of such a “grossly superstitious system” and to understand what part fengshui played in the environmental history of China.

This compact volume shows how the Four Books -- the Greater Learning, the Analects, the Mencius, and the Doctrine of the Mean -- have been read and understood by the Chinese since the twelfth century. Included are selected passages in translation, accompanied by Daniel Gardner's comments and the selected commentary of Zhu Xi (1130-1200), the renowned Neo-Confucian thinker. The book provides an introduction to the later imperial Confucian tradition; introduces the reader to Zhu Xi's commentarial understanding of the Four Books; suggests how Neo-Confucians, like Zhu Xi, through commentary, gave coherence and meaning to the Four Books collectively; and illustrates the nature of the standard educational curriculum.

A wonderfully enjoyable storehouse of ancient Chinese history and legends, which also has an important role in understanding 21st-century China 'And remember: Heaven's blessing will cease forever if there's despair and poverty in your lands' The Most Venerable Book (also known as The Book of History) is one of the Five Classics, a key work of Chinese literature which preserves some of the most ancient and dramatic chronicles of the history, both real and mythological, of the Chinese state. For many centuries it was a central work for anyone wishing to work for the Imperial administration, preserving as it does a fascinating mixture of key Confucian concepts as well as page after page of heroes, benevolent rulers, sagacious ministers, and struggles against flood, corruption and vicious, despotic rulers. The First Emperor tried in 213 BC to have all copies of the book destroyed because of its subversive implication that 'the Mandate of Heaven' could be withdrawn from rulers who failed their people. For similar reasons it was also banned by Chairman Mao. Extraordinarily, the values of The Most Venerable Book have been revived by the Chinese government of the 2010s.

Before Confucius written by Edward L. Shaughnessy and has been published by State University of New York Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997-11-25 with History categories.

Edward L. Shaughnessy examines the original composition of China's oldest books, the Classic of Changes, the Venerated Documents, and the Classic of Poetry. By describing the original contexts in which these books were written and what they meant to their original authors and readers, this work sheds light on both the degree to which Chinese culture already was literate by 1000 BC, and also on how the later classical tradition eventually diverged from these origins.
