Have you ever driven by a classy, gated community and wondered what the hell is going on in there? Perfect for fans of the Anthony Bourdain’s Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly, which gave the reader a behind-the-scenes view of the inner workings of the New York City restaurant scene, The Florida Club offers an inside look at country club living in a gated Florida community. In 2019, with his partners mired in legal trouble and danger closing in, New York businessman Ray Brown decided on a major life change, trading the frenzied world of New York real estate for a relaxed life of leisure in Southwest Florida. The Florida Club follows Ray's story as he acclimates to his new environment and learns about the golf, socializing—and partying—that goes on inside the Florida club. The gated communities in the Sunshine State are full of more than just bunch of stuffy old blue-hairs sitting around playing bridge and waiting for a dirt nap. Others are playing golf, drinking everything they can get their grubby little hands on, and doing pretty much anything and everything to offend the snooty members without getting bounced from the club. Their exploits will amuse, inform, appall, and make you wish you could be one of them. Even if you're skeptical, please buy the book anyhow. It won't take too long to read, and we could really use the money; our bar tab has gotten out of control.

Re-Evaluating Women’s Page Journalism in the Post-World War II Era tells the stories of significant women’s page journalists who contributed to the women’s liberation movement and the journalism community. Previous versions of journalism history had reduced the role these women played at their newspapers and in their communities—if they were mentioned at all. For decades, the only place for women in newspapers was the women’s pages. While often dismissed as fluff by management, these sections in fact documented social changes in communities. These women were smart, feisty and ahead of their times. They left a great legacy for today’s women journalists. This book brings these individual women together and allows for a broader understanding of women’s page journalism in the 1950s and 1960s. It details the significant roles they played in the post-World War II years, laying the foundation for a changing role for women.

WINNER OF THE TIMES BIOGRAPHY OF THE YEAR AT THE BRITISH SPORTS BOOK AWARDS In the 1930s, as the world hurtled towards terrible global conflict, speed was all the rage. It was described by Aldous Huxley as 'the one genuinely modern pleasure', and one of the fastest and most thrilling ways to attain it was through the new sport of bobsledding. Exotic, exciting and above all dangerous, it was by far the most popular event at the Lake Placid Winter Olympics. It required an abundance of skill and bravery. And the four men who triumphed at those Games lived the most extraordinary lives. Billy Fiske was an infamous daredevil, blessed with a natural talent for driving. He would later become the first American airman to die in the war - flying for the RAF. Clifford Gray was a notorious playboy and a player on both Broadway and Hollywood. Or was he? His identity was a mystery for decades. Jay O'Brien was a gambler and a rogue who, according to one ex-wife, forced women to marry him at gunpoint. And Eddie Eagan, a heavyweight boxer and brilliant lawyer, remains the only man to win gold at both the Summer and Winter Olympics. This is their story, of loose living, risk-taking and hell-raising in an age of decadence, and of their race against the odds to become the fastest men on ice. We will never see their like again. Especially after the world did descend into that second, terrible global conflict.

Some of baseball's most powerful and enduring memories have come as a result of watching a team for a season, a decade, or a lifetime. Some teams achieved the unexpected task of pulling themselves up from the bottom to reach the height of success, like the 1914 Miracle Boston Braves and the 1969 Amazin' New York Mets, who both went on to win World Championships. Other teams, like the 1964 Philadelphia Phillies and 1969 Chicago Cubs, experienced an astonishing fall from the roof to the cellar. This work examines some of baseball's greatest comebacks and disappointments. Included are the sagas of the 1903 and 1951 New York Giants, 1906 and 1969 Chicago Cubs, 1914 Boston Braves, 1934 Detroit Tigers, 1946 and 1978 Boston Red Sox, 1950 and 1964 Philadelphia Phillies, 1969 and 1999 New York Mets, 1987 Toronto Blue Jays, 1989 Baltimore Orioles, 1991 Atlanta Braves and Minnesota Twins, and 1998 Florida Marlins.

Florida has long been viewed as a land of hope and endless possibilities. Visionaries seeking to establish new communities where they could escape the influences of society at large have turned to Florida to construct their utopias--from the vast plantations of British philanthropists and entrepreneurs in the eighteenth century to the more exotic Koreshan Unity and its theory that humans live in the center of a Hollow Earth. Some came to the Sunshine State seeking religious freedom, such as the settlers in Moses Levy's Jewish colony, while others settled in Florida to establish alternative lifestyles, like the spiritualists of Cassadaga. Still others created their communities to practice new agricultural techniques or political philosophies. Historians Joe Knetsch and Nick Wynne examine a number of these distinctive utopian communities and how they have contributed to Florida's unique social fabric.

Nigeria has been blessed with a few well-trained organist-composers since the arrival of Christianity in the most populous African country around the 1840s. The institutions established by European missionaries and the colonial administration had a great impact on the emergence of the 'Nigerian organ school'. The musicians had their formative periods at the mission schools, church choirs, and under organ playing apprenticeships. This book focuses on selected organ works by the most celebrated African art musician, Fela Sowande, a Nigerian organist-composer. Fela Sowande is the first African to popularize organ works by natives of Africa in Europe and the United States. He was one of the pioneer composers to incorporate indigenous African elements such as folksongs, rhythms and other types of traditional source materials in solo works for organ. He is considered the most prolific Nigerian composer for solo organ in Nigeria. The discussion of Sowande's music enunciates the relationship between traditional and contemporary musical processes in postcolonial Nigeria. A cultural and/or ethnomusicological analysis of Sowande's selected pieces for organ solo involves an examination of specific indigenous source materials such as rhythmic organization, melodic constructs/thematic materials (music communication), interrelations of music and dance, and elements of musical conception.

We all know about Florida's sun, surf, and senior citizen population, but what do we know about its seedy underbelly? It is a fact that Florida's loophole-laden tax laws and laissez-faire attitude have attracted all kinds of swindlers, from the garden variety con man to criminals as infamous as Al Capone. It is also a fact that Vic Knight knows virtually all there is to know about every one of them. As a tenth-generation Floridian, Knight has abundant personal knowledge of Florida history, which augments his wealth of research on scams. Taking the immortal words of his Papa Johnson and Papa Knight, he has compiled a set of Grandaddy's Rules that can help a person see through the "smooth-talking jaspers" who over the years have bamboozled victims out of billions of dollars. Witty, informal, and sprinkled with down-home Florida vernacular, Knight's tales of the strange educate as they delight. Shady characters like mayor/preacher/convicted felon Oyster King Willie Popham, the fictitious Prince Michael of Austria, and "the mysterious fifty-dollar tipper" carry off a potpourri of scams involving everything from luxury cars to ostrich eggs to phony tax returns. Knight explains how Boca Raton is a city based on the scam, like Treasure Island, whose very name comes from the scam that put it on the map. These cons attract scores of people because they seem fool-proof; but remember Grandaddy's Rule #3:"Nobody ever pulled a rabbit out of a hat without carefully puttin' one in there first." Victor M. Knight, a successful radio-station owner turned Florida guru, is a busy lecturer and television-show host.
