This book provides students and music teachers with a comprehensive overview of the flute from its origin to its use and important facts not covered in traditional method books. It can be used concurrently with any method book, expanding the learning experience beyond “learning how to play” to include all topics relevant to the flute. These topics include: The parts of the instrument How it works The different kinds of flutes How it’s made How to care for it Planning a practice session A survey of the history of woodwind instruments The accessories needed to play the instrument An appendix includes a discussion of the science of sound, a glossary of woodwind instrument terms, a dictionary of the subject instrument terms, an illustrated index of the subject instrument parts, and an instrument ownership record. This provides greater insight into that instrument’s relationship to others in its family and to those companion instruments with which the player will be working. The enrichment results in a well-rounded musician instead of one who can just play an instrument.

Excerpt from An Illustrated History of the Flute, and Sketch of the Successive Improvements Made in the Flute, and a Statement of the Principles Upon Which Flutes Are Constructed: With a Description of the New or Boehm Flute This Flute has two great defects; it is out of tune some of its notes being too flat, and some too sharp and it varies in quality of tone - some of its notes being free and clear, and others feeble and muffled. The two prin cipal causes of these defects are, the unequal distribu tion of the holes, some being above and others below their correct position, and the existence of closed or shut keys. That these are the causes of the imperfections of this instrument will be demonstrated by a very brief ex amination of the principles upon which the fingered wind instruments are, or obviously should be, constructed. "It was estimated in 1829 that one man in ten in London played the flute. Players, teachers, composers and makers competed for their share of the vast market for anything to do with the flute. Much of the history of the flute in the nineteenth century is based on the works in this collection, which includes descriptions of newly-invented flutes, arguments about their relative merits and some extraordinary battles between rival makers and players."--Publisher's description.
