This gentle adventure story about the effects of climate change ends on a hopeful note. Finn and his younger brothers, Leo and Ooley, love reading stories about animals living in forests, on mountains or in the arctic. “When I grow up,” says Finn, “I want to be an explorer and travel around the world. I want to see wild animals and strange birds.”“Why wait?” asks Leo. And so, the next morning, they wake up early and set out on a snowy expedition to search for wild animals. By the end of the 19th century, British imperial medical officers and Christian medical missionaries had introduced Western medicine to Tibet, Sikkim, and Bhutan. Their Footprints Remain uses archival sources, personal letters, diaries, and oral sources in order to tell the fascinating story of how this once-new medical system became imbedded in the Himalayas. Of interest to anyone with an interest in medical history and anthropology, as well as the Himalayan world, this volume not only identifies the individuals involved and describes how they helped to spread this form of imperialist medicine, but also discusses its reception by a local people whose own medical practices were based on an entirely different understanding of the world.

English In Tibet Tibet In English written by L. McMillin and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-11-16 with Literary Criticism categories.

This book explores two kinds of self-presentation in Tibet and the Tibetan diaspora: that of British writers in their travel texts to Tibet from 1774 to 1910 and that of Tibetans in recent autobiographies in English. McMillin contends that Tibet and the Anglophone West have had a long, complex, and convoluted relationship that can be explored, in part, through analysis of English language texts. The first part of the book explores how a myth of epiphany in Tibet comes to dominate English texts of travel in Tibet, while the second part considers how Tibetan autobiographers writing in English have responded and resisted Western images of them.

A systematic, building block-style plan for mastering the most daunting aspect of learning Chinese--how to remember the meaning of more than 2,000 of the most common characters--is provided in this handbook. Beginning with the simplest of strokes, such as those for numbers, scepter, and earth, and progressing to the extremely complex, such as destroy, insert, and mouse, this manual presents a methodology employing memory techniques to associate meanings with the characters' visual components. A sequence of numbered panels displays each character in two font styles, and a notation in the adjacent margin describes the character's pinyin pronunciation. Graphics that identify the components or characters from which the featured characters are drawn, and a listing of both the names of these root components, and the panel numbers that cite their location in the book augment the presentation. Beginners will be best served by using this guide in conjunction with the development of language skills, while those who are familiar with the language will find this book to be a comprehensive reference and refresher.
