A rich brew of more than 40 traditional Brazilian tales—from creation stories and stories of enchantment to animal and trickster tales—draws on the varied cultural traditions of indigenous peoples, people of African descent, those of European (and particularly Portuguese) descent, and mixtures of these groups. The stories are retold by today's accomplished Brazilian storytellers. Also includes background information on the country and the tales, color photographs, traditional recipes, and children's games. Brazil, the largest country in South America, covers a vast terrain that ranges from the tropical rain forests of the Amazon basin and upland farms, to towering mountains and sandy beaches; from highly populated urban centers to virtually inaccessible interior jungle regions. Its population is composed of indigenous peoples (e.g., Tupy, Kaxinawa, Taulipang), people of African descent, those of European (mostly Portuguese) descent, and mixtures of these groups. Drawing on the varied cultural traditions and ethnic diversity of the country, this collection offers readers a rich brew of traditional Brazilian tales—from creation stories and stories of enchantment to animal and trickster tales. More than 40 stories are included, along with background information, color photographs, recipes, and games. There are very few collections of Brazilian folktales currently available in English, and none with this depth and range. This is a wonderful treasury for storytellers, folklorists, and educators. Also a great resource for educators planning units on the Amazon rain forest! All grade levels.

Have you ever wondered why all ant mounds are ruled by the Queen ants? What happened to the last King of the ants? These are some of the unanswered questions that puzzled two young ants, Butterbean and the King. Follow them from their ant mound deep in South Texas as they continue on their journey to find the answers to these questions that have plagued the insect world for centuries, where an unexpected discovery changes their lives forever. King Tissell was named as such because his parents thought King was a strong name and would build character in their young son. Rufus Jingles is a rather large ant given the nickname Butterbean due to his overwhelming passion for food. An unknown journey becomes an adventure when the travelers believe there is something new and interesting up ahead. On their quest to the unknown they encounter numerous strange insects and unusual creatures along the way that become both friend and foe. Join author L. Michael Hellums as he weaves another fascinating tale in the continuation of “The Adventures of Butterbean and the King”. Welcome back to Mikey’s World—A place that’s easy to get into but extremely hard to leave. Special thanks to the book illustrator, Malachy McKinney.

My book follows the life of a young man (eighteen to nineteen) as he works for a secret agency in the protection of humankind against the forces of supernatural creatures and the prevention of mankind learning about the real supernatural world. (Every supernatural creature comes from a city kilometres underground—vampires, giants, Cyclops, demons, and so forth.) This agent is code named Black because he has the power to transform to a full-sized black-scaled dragon with red eyes and purple flames. But the first time he transformed, he was trying to protect a little girl from lava lizards, huge one-ton lizards that spit lava. His powers went out of control, and he burned up the little girl. Now, he does not let a lot of people close. One night, he comes across a work site where four teenagers are being attacked by a shadow wraith (a creature of darkness that feeds on the life force of any living thing). After the attack, Agent Black takes them back to this base to get them checked, where they meet Doc, an elven doctor, and the commander, an immortal woman that has lived for more than a thousand years, and she is the head of the SNPA, the Supernatural Protection/Prevention Agency (depends on which world you come from). Soon after all this, they learn that four teenagers have the same power as Black and have the power to change into dragon (three guys, one girl—ice, earth, and fire guys, and golden magical dragon girl) and are asked to learn from Black to control their powers and protect the secret of this world.

Three compelling memoirs from the author of the “moving and inspiring” international bestseller, To Sir, With Love (The New York Times). E. R. Braithwaite wrote powerfully and poignantly about racial discrimination—both in his most famous novel, based on his own experience teaching in London’s East End, To Sir, With Love, which was made into a 1967 film starring Sidney Poitier—and in his candid nonfiction memoirs, three of which are collected here. Honorary White: In 1973, after the South African government lifted a long-standing ban on To Sir, With Love, Braithwaite was granted the official status of “Honorary White” for the length of his six-week visit. As such, he was afforded some of the freedoms that South Africa’s black population was denied, yet was nonetheless still considered inferior by the white establishment. In this “vivid” memoir, Braithwaite honestly presents his struggle with what he witnesses in South Africa under apartheid (The New York Times). Reluctant Neighbors: Sparked by the experience of sharing a train commute with a bigoted white neighbor, Braithwaite recounts a personal history of remarkable accomplishments in the face of racial intolerance and oppression, offering an unforgettable story of one man’s continuous struggle against injustice and his unwavering dedication to the pursuit of human dignity. A Kind of Homecoming: In the early 1960s, the British Guianese author embarked on a pilgrimage to the West African countries of Ghana, Guinea, and Liberia, and across Sierra Leone just as the emerging nation was preparing to declare its independence. Braithwaite discovered a world vastly different from the staid, firmly established British society in which he had spent most of his life. The sights, sounds, and smells of West Africa vividly reawakened lost memories from his childhood. Entering the intimate circles of the local intelligentsia, he was able to view these newly evolving African societies from the inside, struck by their mixtures of passion and naïveté, their political obsessions and technological indifference. He discovered a world that fascinated, excited, and, in some cases, deeply troubled him—and in the process he discovered himself.
