The overall objective of Phase II was to conduct the national survey to assess the needs of foreign students from developing nations at U.S. colleges and universities and to compare importance and satisfaction of their needs by sponsorship categories (i.e. AID-sponsored vs. others) and other characteristics of students. A multi-stage cluster sample with probability proportionate to size was used to select schools and students in the nation, based on the sampling procedure determined in Phase I. Copies of the questionnaire developed in Phase I were mailed to students chosen in thirty universities. Nearly 1900 students responded to the questionnaire. In every category of needs, need were not satisfied to the level of students' expectations, even through most of the needs were satisfied to a certain degree rather than unsatisfied. Needs for practical experience (work experience and opportunities to apply knowledge), and anticipated post-return needs were among the least satisfied to the students' expectations and the most problematic ones for educational institutions to accommodate. Financial needs and pre-return informational needs were also least met to the students' expectations, however meeting these needs was less problematic.

Growing up in middle-class India, Rajika Bhandari has seen generations of her family look westward, where an American education means status and success. But she resists the lure of America because those who left never return—they all become flies trapped in honey in a land of opportunity. As a young woman, however, she finds herself heading to a US university to study, following her heart and a relationship. When that relationship ends and she fails in her attempt to move back to India as a foreign-educated woman, she returns to the US and finds herself in a job where the personal is political and professional: she is immersed in the lives of international students who come to America from over 200 countries, the universities that attract them, and the tangled web of immigration that a student must navigate. An unflinching and insightful narrative that explores the global appeal of a Made in America education that is a bridge to America’s successful past and to its future, America Calling is both a deeply personal story of Bhandari’s search for her place and voice, and an incisive analysis of America’s relationship with the rest of the world through the most powerful tool of diplomacy: education. At a time of growing nationalism, a turning inward, and fear of the “other,” America Calling is ultimately a call to action to keep America’s borders—and minds—open.

Study Abroad written by Jerry S. Carlson and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990-08-27 with Education categories.

While it is assumed that American undergraduates who study abroad derive unique benefits from the experience, until now its actual impact has not been assessed. This book, which presents the findings of a long-term evaluation project, provides the kind of systematic and comprehensive data needed to document and give future guidance to programs of study abroad. Using comparative measures, the authors examine the effects of overseas study in terms of education, career, personal satisfaction, and cultural values. Undergraduates in four U.S. college and university programs involving nearly thirty European institutions were chosen for the study. The focus of the research is the role of study abroad in students' acquisition of foreign language proficiency, knowledge of and concern for foreign cultures and international issues, attitudes toward their home country and its values, and career objectives and accomplishments. Student profiles indicate consistent patterns in motivation, achievement, and satisfaction that relate to the experience abroad. In their conclusion, the authors look at the implications of their findings in the context of our times and society and offer suggestions for some new directions for study abroad in the coming years. This analysis will be relevant for educational decision-makers, funding organizations, government, and the research community.
