The Malabar Independent Syrian Church is the smallest of the jurisdictions into which the St Thomas Christian community is divided today. It has, however, played a crucial role in the development of the Syrian Churches, whose stories can not be told without it. The present work shows how the bishops of this tiny, one-Diocese Church, now largely forgotten, once stood at the centre of the events that shaped the present ecclesiastical situation.

Contrary to popular assumption, the doctrine of predestination is part of the Catholic Church's teachings. The research in "Not Without Us" aims at showing how saints, bishops, and theologians from Augustine to the Second Council of Orange (529 a.d.) upheld this theology and even defended it. Together with a forthcoming volume, covering the developments in the history of this doctrine from Orange to Thomas Aquinas, author Guido Stucco outlines, in an easily accessible way to nonspecialists, the Catholic Church's comprehensive, pre-Reformation understanding of predestination.

Excerpt from Our Bishops: A Sketch of the Origin and Growth of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ as Shown in the Lives of Its Distinguished Leaders There are many others of these fathers whose faithful, self denying labors the pen of the historian should record before the waves of oblivion have rolled over them. The author has confined his labors to those, whom the church by her highest authority, has called from the ranks and placed in positions of honor and influence. The means of information at his command were limited, but he aimed to gather what was accessible from living men, from private diaries, from church publications, and to present them to the church as his space would allow. Excerpt from The Bishops in the Tower: A Record of Stirring Events Affecting the Church and Nonconformists From the Restoration to the Revolution Professor Kirkpatrick, last year, dealt with the history of the translations of the Bible, with especial reference to the Revised Version. This year, being again called upon, I availed myself of the opportunity of taking up the thread of the history of the English Church where I had dropped it, viz. At the Caroline Settlement of the form of Public Worship. The following pages contain the substance, though in a somewhat altered form, of the lectures then delivered. I greet you in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It is my sincere prayer that you are being Blessed even as you read this. Why does Man live such wretched lives and die, when they can live according to God's plan and live again. Man's eternal life is hidden in Christ Jesus and should be the " The Reason Why ". Man must repent to receive God's plan for salvation. Man must continue to praise God and acknowledge him as creator, sustainer and Lord of all things. Man must study God's word to defeat Satan. Man's heart must unify with God and his son Jesus Christ in order to have the witness of the word that became flesh. Do I need to say more?

The Forgotten Prophet: Bishop Henry McNeal Turner and the African American Prophetic Tradition, by Andre E. Johnson, is a study of the prophetic rhetoric of nineteenth century African Methodist Episcopal Church bishop Henry McNeal Turner. By locating Turner within the African American prophetic tradition, Johnson examines how Bishop Turner adopted a prophetic persona. As one of America's earliest black activists and social reformers, Bishop Turner made an indelible mark in American history and left behind an enduring social influence through his speeches, writings, and prophetic addresses. This text offers a definition of prophetic rhetoric and examines the existing genres of prophetic discourse, suggesting that there are other types of prophetic rhetorics, especially within the African American prophetic tradition. In examining these modes of discourses from 1866-1895, this study further examines how Turner's rhetoric shifted over time. It examines how Turner found a voice to article not only his views and positions, but also in the prophetic tradition, the views of people he claimed to represent. The Forgotten Prophet is a significant contribution to the study of Bishop Turner and the African American prophetic tradition.

Ministry With The Forgotten written by Bishop Kenneth L. Carder and has been published by Abingdon Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-09-17 with Religion categories.

Dementia diseases represent a crisis of faith for many family members and congregations. Magnifying this crisis is the way people with dementia tend to be objectified by both medical and religious communities. They are recipients of treatment and projects for mission. Ministry is done to and for them rather than with them. While acknowledging the devastation of dementia diseases, Ken Carder draws on his own experience as a caregiver, hospice chaplain, and pastoral practitioner to portray the gifts as well as the challenges accompanying dementia diseases. He confronts the deep personal and theological questions created by loving people with dementia diseases, demonstrating how living with dementia can be a means of growing in faith, wholeness, and ministry for the entire community of faith. He also reveals that authentic faith transcends intellectual beliefs, verbal affirmations, and prescribed practices. Carder asserts that the Judeo-Christian tradition offers a broader lens, defining personhood in relationship to God’s story and humanity’s participation in God’s mighty acts of creation and new creation; thereby contributing to hope, community, and self-worth. Pastors and congregations will be better equipped to minister with people affected by dementia, receiving their gifts and responding to their unique needs. They will learn how people with dementia contribute to the community and the church’s life and mission, discovering practical ways those contributions can be identified, nurtured, and incorporated into the church’s life and ministry.
