This well documented collection of personal stories of adventure and tragedy begins with my earliest California ancestors who were some of the first of the 49er families to settle in Sonora during California's Gold Rush. The McQuades left Australia on a long, perilous sea journey with two small children. Bill Price of Kentucky, 18 when he joined a wagon train, barely survived the harrowing trip over the Sierras taking some of the first cattle to Sonora. He would marry Polly McQuade and their stories and those of their eight children, show what drama can occur in ordinary families; an out of wedlock family of the county sheriff, a miner who came home from Nome with enough gold to purchase the largest cattle ranch in the county, and a murder across from City Hall. There was tragedy, also, including three family suicides. The first and most devastating for the family was Polly's drowning when Genie, her youngest child, was five. Genie was my troubled grandmother and I set out to find her backstory. I was immediately led to the Gold Rush that brought her parents together. I saw how the time and place affected them and the effect they had on town and county. This was never intended to be a book but the stories piled upon stories. Genie's is the last chapter.

When gold was found in Northern California, news of it spread like a wildfire during the spring and summer of 1848. At first, most people thought the reports were too good to be true, but as weeks and months flew by, they heard about more people striking it rich – and imaginations started to run wild. Tens of thousands of people started to dream about gold, and some of them left everything they knew to make the journey to California. It didn’t matter if you were black, white or brown – anyone could go. Even people in Central and South America, Australia, China, and Western Europe heard about the gold and made the journey. By 1855, hundreds of thousands of people had converged on California. In this study, the author shares diary entries from gold seekers, painting a detailed portrait of the frenzy that overtook the world, the lives of the miners, and how the move West changed the fabric of a nation. Without the dreams, hard work, and dedication of the miners who moved West, the United States of America would not be what it is today.

When The World Rushed In was first published in 1981, the Washington Post predicted, “It seems unlikely that anyone will write a more comprehensive book about the Gold Rush.” Twenty years later, no one has emerged to contradict that judgment, and the book has gained recognition as a classic. As the San Francisco Examiner noted, “It is not often that a work of history can be said to supplant every book on the same subject that has gone before it.” Through the diary and letters of William Swain--augmented by interpolations from more than five hundred other gold seekers and by letters sent to Swain from his wife and brother back home--the complete cycle of the gold rush is recreated: the overland migration of over thirty thousand men, the struggle to “strike it rich” in the mining camps of the Sierra Nevadas, and the return home through the jungles of the Isthmus of Panama. In a new preface, the author reappraises our continuing fascination with the “gold rush experience” as a defining epoch in western--indeed, American--history.

The very name Deadwood conjures up vivid Wild West images: saloons with swinging doors, brazen dance-hall girls, buckskin-clad Calamity Jane roaming the streets with her erstwhile paramour, Wild Bill Hickok. The setting is the lawless Dakota Territory of 1876 at the start of the Black Hills gold rush, a stampede for the golden pay dirt. One would hardly expect to find a Jewish pioneer grocer named Jacob Goldberg in this scene, yet Deadwood's story is incomplete without Goldberg. And Goldberg's story is incomplete without either Calamity Jane or Wild Bill. Not just Goldberg, but Finkelstein (also known as Franklin), Stern (also known as Star), Jacobs, Schwarzwald, Colman, Hattenbach, and many other Jews joined the throngs. The Jews provided much more than overalls, chamberpots, and the chambers in which to put them. They also became the mayors, legislators, and civic leaders who helped bring sense and stability to this unruly expanse.

The discovery of gold in California enticed many eastern Americans to leave their homes, their businesses, and even their families and rush westward with the dream of striking it rich. Their tales of hard traveling, exhausting work, and busted dreams illustrate the adventurous spirit and nai ve idealism that has become part of America's romantic past.
