Not illustrated. 1914 edition. Excerpt: ... INTRODUCTION MATTHEW ARNOLD Matthew Arnold, son of Dr. Thomas Arnold, the famous Head Master of Rugby, was born at Laleham, Middlesex County, England, December 24, 1822. After attending school at Laleham, Winchester, and Rugby, he entered Balliol College, Oxford, where he attracted attention by his brilliant scholarship and poetical proclivities. In 1843 he won the Newdigate prize offered for the best poem by an undergraduate, and in 1845, tne vear after his graduation, was chosen to a fellowship at Oriel, --a much-coveted distinction. After taking his degree, he taught classics for a short time at Rugby, leaving there in 1847 to become private secretary to Lord Lansdowne, then President of the Council. Four years later he was appointed to an inspectorship of schools--a position which he was to occupy for thirty-five years. His career as a poet began in 1849, when he published a slender book of verse under the title of The Strayed Reveller, and Other. Poems. This was followed in 1852 by a second volume, entitled Empedocles on Etna, and Other Poems. These works were; i quietly received by the public at first, but gradually won their; way into favor. Among the poems they contained were many of recognized merit, such as "The Forsaken Merman," " Resigna tion," "Tristram and Iseult," and "Isolation." ix Poems, First Series, appeared in 1853; and Poems, Second Series, in 1855. The first was of special importance, as it included Arnold's masterpiece, " Sohrab and Rustum," with several other classics, among which were " The Scholar Gipsy," "The Church of Brou," and the inimitable little elegy, "Requiescat." The one addition of consequence in the second series was "Balder Dead." Arnold was now regarded as one of the leading poets of the age, and...

Matthew Arnold written by C. Machann and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-03-18 with Literary Criticism categories.

Matthew Arnold, the foremost Victorian 'man of letters', forged a unique literary career, first as an important post-Romantic poet and then as a prose writer who profoundly influenced the formation of modern literary and cultural studies. Machann challenges the popular image of Arnold as an elitist intellectual and shows how his poetry and prose grew out of his personal life and his passionate engagement with the world, emphasizing the journal publications that drove his career as a literary, social and religious critic.

First published in 1969, this edition collection brings together a series of essays offering a re-evaluation of Victorian poetry in the light of early 20th Century criticism. The essays in this collection concentrate upon the poets whose reputations suffered from the great redirection of energy in English criticism initiated in this century by Eliot, Richards and Leavis. What theses poets wrote about, the values they expressed, the form of the poems, the language they used, all these were examined and found wanting in some radical way. One of the results of this criticism was the renewal of interest in metaphysical and eighteenth-century poetry and corresponding ebb of enthusiasm for Romantic poetry and for Victorian poetry in particular. Most of the essays in this book take as their starting point questions raised by the debate on Victorian poetry, both earlier in this century and in the more recent past. There are essays on the poetry of Tennyson, Browning and Arnold, on that of Clough, who until recently has been neglected, and Hopkins, because of, rather than in spite of, the fact that he is usually considered to be a modern poet. The volume is especially valuable in that it will give a clearer understanding of the nature of Victorian poetry, concentrating as it does on those areas of a poet’s work where critical discussion seems most necessary.

This famous work was the result of the wartime collaboration of two Scottish scholars. Their tracing of the course of English poetry has been described by The Times Literary Supplement as a 'volume of masterly compression'. They deliberately spend most time on the greatest poets, believing that, significant as traditions and influences are, the great poet himself affects the spirit of his age and moulds the tradition he has inherited. At the same time, enough attention is paid to minor poets to make the book historically complete, and to fill in the most important links in the chain of poetic development. Thus Gower is here, as well as Chaucer; Patmore, as well as Browning. Both in scope and in detail A Critical History of English Poetry is a distinguished and valuable work.
