Excerpt from The Foundation of American Dermatology: Being the President's Address at the Fourth Annual Meeting of the American Dermatological Association Held at Newport R. I., August 31, 1880 The year 1870 is, moreover, memorable for the arrival in Boston of a valuable dermatological museum, consisting of duplicates of the more important models in the Hopital St. Louis, Paris. The collection was purchased by Dr. Wigglesworth, and consists of many beautiful representations of disease from the hand of the well-known artist, M. Baretta. There are one hundred and seventy-nine models; of these, one hundred and thirty-four portray non-syphilitic and forty-five syphilitic diseases of the skin. Among the rarer affections, four examples of peculiar forms of scrofuloderma, six of lupus, three of lymphangitis, one of pityriasis rubra, and one of that but little understood disease called by the French mycosis fung01de, may be noted. The last mentioned model shows the head, arm, and forearm, and anterior surface of the trunk, which regions are the seat of variously sized, apparently soft, flat and prominently-raised, smooth and scaly, circumscribed and diffused, pinkish, fungoid tumors, tuber cles, and shallow ulcers, the latter discharging a yellowish, sanious fluid. Some of these lesions are the size of coins, while others are 'as large as the palm of a hand. Over those which have not broken down numerous distinctly - defined, superficial, capillary blood-ves sels ar'e conspicuous. The patient was a woman aged about 50, but, unfortunately, there is no history. I have called special attention to this case because the subject of fungoid diseases of the skin is one of much interest, and moreover because it has occurred to me that the disease was probably the same as that which I brought before the Association at a former meeting, with the title inflam matory fungoid neoplasm. This costly and valuable collection was in 1873 donated by Dr. Wigglesworth to Harvard University. I believe that no catalogue of the museum has as yet been pre pared. This concise, easy-to-read book summarizes the current clinical evidence and basic science relating to aging and the skin, assisting the clinician in addressing skin problems in older dermatologic patients. Each chapter focuses on a particular area in which new knowledge has rapidly emerged over the past 5 years, ensuring that the book is completely up-to-date. Recent insights into aging skin from basic and translational science are first discussed, covering the underlying genetics and the potential role of topical agents and procedures in reversing the aging process. Evidence-based prescribing in older patients is then explained, and the evidence relating to treatments for psoriasis, reviewed. Further chapters in Geriatric Dermatology address non-surgical treatment options for basal cell carcinoma, the increase in and management of sexually transmitted diseases in older dermatology patients, and cutaneous signs of elder mistreatment. Case vignettes and informative illustrations assist the reader in quickly grasping the connection between an age-related process and its clinical impact. Geriatric Dermatology is written for dermatologists, research scientists with translational interest, geriatricians, and gerontologists.

Clinical Dermatology written by Richard B. Weller and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-01-27 with Medical categories.

The best-selling text has been completely revised and revitalised in this fifth edition, with the authors once again encouraging general practitioners, medical students, general physicians and early stage dermatology specialist trainees and interns to relish the unique challenge of diagnosing and treating skin conditions. Clinical Dermatology, 5th edition contains over 400 high quality pictures and diagrams combined with colourful phrases to illustrate and entertain as it teaches. The book has established a reputation as a ‘way of learning’ and as an accessible guide to the subject for the aspiring specialist. Readers are guided through the maze that too often lies between the presenting skin complaint and its final diagnosis and treatment. The authors have skilfully crafted an easily read text with enough detail to clarify the subject, but not enough to obscure it. This fifth edition contains new chapters on non-invasive physical treatment and dermoscopy, and new material on cosmetic dermatology, surgical dermatology, the skin and the psyche, and dermatoses of non-Caucasian skin. The text throughout the book has been updated in line with developments in the science and practice of dermatology. “... brilliantly succeeds in enticing you to look further. The writing is clear, and the joint British-American authorship avoids any parochial views.” From a review of a previous edition in BMJ “...a very well-presented book...an excellent aid for teaching. I recommend this book highly to individuals and departments.” From a review of a previous edition in J Derm Treatment “… provides a good overview of the structure and function of the skin as well as a good foundation for learning dermatology…well organized and includes a chapter dedicated to skin signs of systemic disease which is not covered in the other dermatology primers.” From a review of a previous edition in JAMA
