It contains four freedoms that guarantee free movements of goods, services, capital and people. With a possession of 4.325 Mio. km2 and 493 Mio. citizens it is one of the biggest internal markets on earth. Due to the omitted border formalities people are free to choose their place of residence, university and work place. But also the increasing quantity of goods followed by much more competition on the market in the EU leads to a price advantage for the consumers and therefore to a competitive position on the international market. Furthermore, the European Union framed some rules and additives to regulate the domestic market, like the implementation of a single currency in year 2001. In addition particular minimum standards, common standards for the environment, energy political measures, arrangements for consumer protection, a common transport policy, research funding as well as a solidary contribution for less developed Member States exist or are in process in the new regions which now belong to the EU. But there is still plenty of room for improvement with regard to the implementation of these regulations. Actually critics suppose that the transformation of normal markets in different countries into an internal market for all countries is a dubious method with incidental negative ancillary effects with unpredictable extents for the future. On account of this, the Research Paper primarily implies an explanation of the four freedoms of the European Union’s Single Market considerably. Secondly the main advantages as well as the disadvantages of the internal European trade are carved out and analysed.

In the first step, the fundamental freedoms are characterized and distinguished. Afterwards, a detailed look at their history is taken and their most important milestones discussed. Furthermore, their development is traced. Subsequently, two exemplary recent events, the British exit out of the European Union and the European refugee crisis, are examined. On their basis, the importance of the four fundamental freedoms today, is discussed. Special attention is paid on the free movement of persons, as this appears to be the one which has arisen the most displease. In connection to this, possible implications are weighted and the actual discontent of the free movement of persons questioned.

This book explores how the right to the free movement of goods, persons, services and capital in the European Union legal order affects welfare states. These "four freedoms", as they are known, are vital instruments for the protection of a European market unencumbered by internal frontiers. The European Constitution, Welfare States and Democracy explore the relationships and conflicts that have emerged between the European constitution and the legal regulation of mixed economies and markets within welfare-states. The reach of free movement within the EU Internal Market and what constitutes a restriction are the topics of this book. For many years the tension between free movement and restrictions have been the subject of intense discussion and controversy, and this includes the constitutional reach of the rights conferred by the Treaty of Lisbon. Anything that makes movement less attractive or more burdensome may constitute a restriction. Restrictions may be justified, but only if proportionate. The reach of free movement is fundamental to the Internal Market, both for the economic constitution and increasingly for individual rights in a European legal order that provides constitutional guarantees for rights, exceeding those of free movement. The interaction between fundamental rights and fundamental freedoms to movement distinguishes the EU legal order from the national legal systems. The book falls into four parts, ‘The reach of free movement’, ‘Justifications and Proportionality’, ‘Fundamental rights’, and ‘Looking Abroad’. After the world war two the Europe was periled: it was disjointed, the economies of majority European countries were devastated and the contravention of the equipoise in Europe menaced it to face the upcoming economical and political catastrophes in region, the situation acquired immediate handicapping, betimes the idea how to resolve problems and the remedy of the situation arose in Sir Winston Churchill’s words: “Recreate the European Family or as much of it as we can and provide it with a structure under which it can dwell in peace in safety and in freedom. We must build a kind of United States of Europe” and this words stimulated the main European countries to establish the “European United States” another “land of opportunity”, without borders and with much more opportunities and capacity to achieve a better life. In 1957 was signed the Treaty of Rome which laid the essential legal foundations for European Committee. After the establishing the European Committee its main tasks regarded to the achieving the high point of standard of living and economical expansion, for further development of mentioned tasks the Internal Market was subsisted by the EC treaty provisions which was the incarnation of Sir Winston Churchill’s idea and significant tool of economic integration, no boarders, no custom duties and the abolition of barriers to the free movement of goods, services, workers and capital within the member states known as the ‘four freedoms’, was the great step towards the European consolidation.
