In the fog of London town, a man is hounded by mysterious attackers. Each morning John Harden is silently menaced by a different passenger on his train. Objects keep disappearing in his house, then reappearing in bizarre places. Is he losing his mind, or can Holmes and Watson find a pattern to this sly terrorisation? Holmes and Watson are just coming to grips with this mystery when another lands on their doorstep. So marks the beginning of an unprecedented spate of cases, each more alarming than the next: a tormented translator, an assaulted actress, a murder with the hallmarks of Jack the Ripper... It can be no coincidence that the world's greatest detective is presented with so many cases at once. The crimes have been designed with the sole aim of bringing him face-to-face with a deadly adversary. Holmes and Watson are drawn into a dangerous four-handed game against an organisation of immense power and ruthless intent. In a dastardly final move, their foe make the consequences of losing the game appallingly concrete. In the second part of the beautifully written Odyssey of Sherlock Holmes Trilogy, Paul D. Gilbert pitches Holmes and Watson against a teeming criminal underworld.

The Pawnee Ghost Dance Hand Game written by Alexander Lesser and has been published by U of Nebraska Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996-01-01 with Social Science categories.

The Ghost Dance religion that swept through the Plains Indian tribes in the early 1890s was embraced wholeheartedly by the Pawnees. It was a message of hope to a people devastated by the attacks of enemy tribes, the encroachment of white settlers, and the outbreak of epidemics. For the Pawnees, who were looking to the U.S. government and trying unsuccessfully to farm their land, the Ghost Dance movement promised salvation: a restoration of the Indian dead, the buffalo, and the old times. Alexander Lesser shows how the Ghost Dance brought about a partial revival of traditional Pawnee culture and its dances and songs. The ancient guessing hand game, remembered best by a tribe starved for the joy of play, became an important part of the Ghost Dance ritual. What had been a gambling game, a representation of warfare played by men, was transformed into a sacred game played by both sexes as an expression of faith or ?good fortune.? Lesser surveys the history of the Pawnee Indians and their relations with the federal government and describes in detail the Ghost Dance hand games that ?were the chief intellectual product of Pawnee culture? from the onset of the messianic movement to the original publication of this book in 1933. Citing such authorities as James Mooney and Stewart Culin, Lesser produced an enduring classic, now introduced by Alice Beck Kehoe, a professor of anthropology at Marquette University and the author of The Ghost Dance: Ethnohistory and Revitalization.

History Of Chess written by H. J. R. Murray and has been published by Good Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-12-16 with Games & Activities categories.

History of Chess by H. J. R. Murray is widely regarded as the most authoritative and most comprehensive history of the game. Murray's aim is threefold: to present as complete a record as is possible of the varieties of chess that exist or have existed in different parts of the world; to investigate the ultimate origin of these games and the circumstances of the invention of chess; and to trace the development of the modern European game from the first appearance of its ancestor, the Indian chaturanga, in the beginning of the 7th century. The first part of the book describes the history of the Asiatic varieties of chess, the Arabic and Persian literature on chess, and the theory and practice of the game of shatranj. The second part is concerned with chess in Europe in the Middle Ages, its role in literature and in the moralities, and with medieval chess problems, leading up to the beginning of modern chess and the history of the modern game through to the 19th century.
