This is the first time that a substantial and representative selection of Flint's poetry has been collected. The Introduction supplies important biographical information, and traces how Flint became involved, along with Ezra Pound, Richard Aldington, and H.D., in the Imagist project. There are sixty-three poems drawn from Flint's three published collections of poetry--In the Net of the Stars (1909), Cadences (1915), and Otherworld (1920), and a further twenty-two uncollected or previously unpublished poems, making eighty-five poems in all. The Introduction also offers a sustained and illuminating discussion of the evolution of Flint's art through three volumes. In addition, there are five appendices, among them Flint's important essays, "Imagisme" and "The History of Imagism." The book seeks to establish Flint as a significant contributor to early Modernist poetry, i.e., Imagism, and to reassess the qualities and achievement of an undeservedly overlooked poet.

Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel (Englisches Seminar), language: English, abstract: Though there was a movement since 1890 that began to break with previous norms, Modernism refers to the modern period from 1910 to 1945. The year 1913 is referred to as the beginning of the age of modernism when the Amory Show took place in New York in March 1913. It was the first large exhibition that showed modern art in the U.S., which was radical art in contrast to American standards. The time of modernism brought about the development of new inventions like radio broadcasting, the rise of motion pictures, mass production and the spread of consumerism, automobiles and aviation. Due to these inventions, the economic, social and political conditions changed and also literature was affected by these changes of society. Modernism as a literary movement caused a fundamental break with traditional modes of western art, concerning religion, social conventions and morality. It is an artistic movement that was characterized by its "sense of engagement with ideas of the 'new'" (Armstrong 2005, 24). This term paper deals with the Imagist movement that came into being in 1912, and which is part of the modernist movement. The term paper further deals with Hilda Doolittle's place within the Imagist movement and her poem Sea Rose.

Sometimes the word “lyric” seems to appear everywhere: either it’s used interchangeably with the word “poetry” or it attaches to descriptions of literature, art, film, and even ordinary objects in order to capture some quality of aesthetic appeal or meaning. Lyric Trade is not yet another attempt to define the lyric, but instead it digs into how poems use lyric in relation to race, gender, nation, and empire. Engaging with poets such as Gwendolyn Brooks, H.D., Lorine Niedecker, Alice Notley, and Myung Mi Kim, this book asks: What does lyric mean, and why should it matter to poets and readers? Lyric Trade argues that lyric in the postwar long poem not only registers the ideological contradictions of modernism’s insistence on new forms, but that it also maps spaces for formal reimaginings of the subject.

Even before the first books of her poems were published in the 1890s, friends, neighbors, and even apparently strangers knew Emily Dickinson was a writer of remarkable verses. Featuring both well-known documents and material printed or collected here for the first time, this book offers a broad range of writings that convey impressions of Dickinson in her own time and for the first decades following the publication of her poems. It all begins with her school days and continues to the centennial of her birth in 1930. In addition, promotional items, reviews, and correspondence relating to early publications are included, as well as some later documents that reveal the changing assessments of Dickinson’s poetry in response to evolving critical standards. These documents provide evidence that counters many popular conceptions of her life and reception, such as the belief that the writer best known for poems focused on loss, death, and immortality was herself a morose soul. In fact, those who knew her found her humorous, playful, and interested in other people. Dickinson maintained literary and personal correspondence with major representatives of the national literary scene, developing a reputation as a remarkable writer even as she maintained extreme levels of privacy. Evidence compiled here also demonstrates that she herself made considerable provision for the survival of her poems and laid the groundwork for their eventual publication. Dickinson in Her Own Time reveals the poet as her contemporaries knew her, before her legend took hold.

From quantum physics and genetics to psychology and the social sciences, from the development of atomic weapons to the growing mass media of film and radio, the early 20th century was a period of intense scientific and technological change. Modernism, Science, and Technology surveys the scientific contexts of writers from H.G. Wells and Gertrude Stein to James Joyce and Virginia Woolf and the ways in modernist writers responded to these paradigm shifts. Introducing key concepts from science studies and their implications for the study of modernist literature, the book includes chapters covering the physical sciences, mathematics, life sciences, social sciences and 'pseudosciences'. Including a timeline of key developments and guides to further reading, this is an essential guide to students and researchers studying the topic at all levels.

Taking 44 Mecklenburgh Square as the focal point and springboard for a critical group study of D.H. Lawrence, H.D. and Richard Aldington, this book offers a fresh perspective on the relationship of modernist biofiction and poetry to the literature of the First World War. A group that Perdita Schaffner described as 'another Bloomsbury set', the Mecklenburgh Square writers, like the Bloomsbury Group proper, 'lived in squares' and 'loved in triangles', in Dorothy Parker's famous formulation. Geographically adjacent, these sets intersected socially and, at points, in their aesthetics: both practiced innovative forms of what may broadly be defined as 'life writing'. But, demarcating the Mecklenburgh Square writers from the Bloomsbury Set, the former had its origins in the transatlantic avant-garde: Lawrence. H.D., Aldington (and John Cournos) were all associated with Imagism, the poetic movement which instantiated Anglo-American modernism. Considered as a pro-tem collective, these four poets, all of whom were also novelists and translators, contest the binaries that still obtain between modernist and First World War writing. This group study of Lawrence, H.D., Aldington and Cournos tracks the transition of Imagism from a pre-war mode to a war poetics which includes but is not confined to the trench lyric and it traces, in the transtextual relations between the Mecklenburgh Square novels, the traumatic imprint of the war on modernist life writing.
