Excerpt from The French Revolution a Short History The object of this book is similar to that with which, a few years ago, I wrote a short biography of Napoleon. The main outlines of the Revolution, the proportion and relation of things, tend to become obscured under the accumulation of historical detail that is now proceeding. This is an attempt, therefore, to disentangle from the mass of details the shape, the movement, the significance of this great historical cataclysm. To keep the outline clear I have deliberately avoided mentioning the names of many subordinate actors; thinking that if nothing essential was connected with them the mention of their names would only tend to confuse matters. Similarly with incidents, I have omitted a few, such as the troubles at Avignon, and changed the emphasis on others, judging freely their importance and not following the footsteps of my predecessors, as in the case of the capture of the Bastille, the importance of which was vastly exaggerated by early writers on the subject. Excerpt from The History of the French Revolution, Vol. 1 of 4 It is to be regretted that an author so well versed in the annals of his country as M. Thiers, has not thought it worth his while to enter more into detail on the subject of the numerous secondary causes which helped to bring about the French Revolution. It will be observed that, after a few brief introductory paragraphs, of a didactic rather than an historical character, he comes at once to his subject, as if he took for granted that all his readers were as well acquainted as himself with the remote, as well as with the immediate, origin of that memorable event His history may be said to commence with the derangement of the national finances after the death of Maurepas; but the seeds of the revolution were sown long before his time. The immediately pro pelling cause was no doubt financial, but the struggle had become ne cessary - it may almost be said from the day of the decease (if the Grand Monarque. Excerpt from History of the French Revolution of 1848, Vol. 1 of 2 Louis Philippe of Orleans was called to the throne as the living and crowned revolution of 1789. This prince yet lives, but there is as wide a Space between the throne and exile as between life and death, and Ishull speak of him with the same freedom as if he had ceased to exist. Living, I did not atter him. I held myself at a respectful distance from his kingdom and his favors; and, exiled and dead to power, I will not insult him. Exile and years command more respect than even the grave, from the hearts of men. France had the right to suffer him to fall from the throne. History, in my opinion, will have neither the right of hating nor that of disdaining him. The man occupies a large space by himself in his reign, and his reign will fill a great space also in history. There is nothing so mean as to dwarf one's enemies. The people who have suc ceeded Louis Philippe have no need of this subterfuge of kings, who always insult their predecessors. The people are great enough to measure themselves with a dethroned king, and to concede his full height to the sovereign they have displaced. Excerpt from History of the French Revolution: Its Causes and Consequences The faults of the people are more insisted upon than those of the rulers, because it is written for the former, not for the latter; and because, if the latter have a lesson to learn from history, the former have a still greater one, and one that, if well learned by. Excerpt from Narrative of the French Revolution of 1848 And never was so much work done, and well done, in so brief a space of time. The Three Days Of July, glorious as they were to the great-hearted victors, resulted in nothing more than a transposition of the established order of things; they shifted the parts in the political drama from one set of actors to another, but the play remained the same. The Three Days of February were days both of destruction and creation, and produced a fundamental change in the whole political and social system of the country. Between the ancient France Of Louis Philippe and the new-born Republic there lies the interval of a deluge. Excerpt from The Story of the French Revolution The following Sketch of the course of the French Revolution was originally published during 1889 in serial form in Justice, the weekly organ of the Social Demo' cratic Federation. It has been revised, corrected, and, in some parts, added to, for the present re-issue. It need scarcely be said that it in no way pretends to be a com plete history of the great political, social, and intellectual movement it describes. The present volume is designed primarily as a guide to those who, not having the time to study larger works on the subject, yet wish during these centennial years to have in a small compass a con nected description of the main events of the French Revolution, more especially from the point Of View of modern Socialism. It is undeniable that there are many Englishmen who would indignantly repudiate any'asper sions on their education for whom the French Revolution means little more than the destruction of one institution called the Bastille, the erection of another institution called theguillotine, and the establishment of the Napo leonic Empire on the ruins of both. They have no idea Of the complex forces, economical, speculative, and po litical, which manifested themselves in the succession of crises (scarcely, indeed, of the existence of the crises themselves) which took place between the assembling of the states-general in 1789, _and the suppression of the Babmuf conspiracy in 1796. Excerpt from The French Revolution in English History While much labour has been spent over the period of the French Revolution, no general account of its in uence in English history exists. An attempt is here made to fill the gap, and to sketch in outline the workings of a force which penetrated English life, directly and by reaction, far into the nineteenth century. The general thread of politics, theory. And literature are traced, and concrete illustration is also supplied from the experiences of individuals, poets, politicians, and working men. Some unused material remains in the Public Record Office, the British Museum, and in the Privy Council records; and this has been drawn upon. Printed biographies, pamphlets, and news papers supply the bulk of the evidence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
