The following study investigates the components of critical friendship in the hope of establishing a measure that can be used to assess one's ability to serve as a critical friend. Critical friendship is an underserved component of feedback giving and receiving that fits within the collaborative learning framework. A critical friend is defined as "a trusted person who asks provocative questions, provides data to be examined through another lens, and offers critique of a person's work as a friend" (Costa & Kallick, 1993, p. 50). A measure of critical friendship was developed here, The Critical Friendship Scale (CFS), to determine one's level of critical friendship. A principal component analysis revealed the following components of the Critical Friendship Scale: giving feedback, interpersonal trust, receiving feedback, intellectual desire, intrapersonal trust, carefulness, and caring. This scale provides a basis for which to further improve and develop a valid and reliable measure for assessing one's level of critical friendship. As such, future research should look to improve the CFS and then use it in training individuals in critical friendship. The CFS also has the opportunity for broader use within the feedback domain as scholars search for ways to give effective feedback to diverse audiences.

Social isolation and loneliness are serious yet underappreciated public health risks that affect a significant portion of the older adult population. Approximately one-quarter of community-dwelling Americans aged 65 and older are considered to be socially isolated, and a significant proportion of adults in the United States report feeling lonely. People who are 50 years of age or older are more likely to experience many of the risk factors that can cause or exacerbate social isolation or loneliness, such as living alone, the loss of family or friends, chronic illness, and sensory impairments. Over a life course, social isolation and loneliness may be episodic or chronic, depending upon an individual's circumstances and perceptions. A substantial body of evidence demonstrates that social isolation presents a major risk for premature mortality, comparable to other risk factors such as high blood pressure, smoking, or obesity. As older adults are particularly high-volume and high-frequency users of the health care system, there is an opportunity for health care professionals to identify, prevent, and mitigate the adverse health impacts of social isolation and loneliness in older adults. Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults summarizes the evidence base and explores how social isolation and loneliness affect health and quality of life in adults aged 50 and older, particularly among low income, underserved, and vulnerable populations. This report makes recommendations specifically for clinical settings of health care to identify those who suffer the resultant negative health impacts of social isolation and loneliness and target interventions to improve their social conditions. Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults considers clinical tools and methodologies, better education and training for the health care workforce, and dissemination and implementation that will be important for translating research into practice, especially as the evidence base for effective interventions continues to flourish.

Social Relationships And Well Being Rediscovering The Importance Of Adult Friendship written by victor Arnold Kaufman and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020 with categories.

Friendships are important sources of social connection and a valuable source of joy throughout our lives; yet modern relationship researchers have focused the majority of their attention on connections with romantic partners and/or family members. Moreover, few studies have assessed how all three of these relationships simultaneously affect individuals' lives. The aims of the following three studies are to illuminate how and why friendships are uniquely fundamental in the lives of adults, and improve upon the methodology used to assess the value adult friendships have to offer. Study 1 of this dissertation examines how satisfaction in relationships with friends, family, and spouses independently affect individuals' well-being. The findings revealed a significant, negative interaction between intimate relationship satisfaction, friendship satisfaction, and life satisfaction such that, when satisfaction with intimate partners was high, life satisfaction was high regardless of friendship quality; however, when satisfaction with intimate partners was low, those with high quality friendships had moderately high satisfaction with life. Study 2 expands on the findings of Study 1 by asking what aspects of friendships account for their benefits and to whom are each of these aspects more or less relevant. Study 2 accomplishes this by assessing whether or not specific dimensions of friendship (closeness, enjoyment, and utility) are independently associated with individuals' well-being and happiness, and estimating whether these associations vary by gender. The results indicated that only closeness and enjoyment, not utility, were independently associated with individual well-being, and there was a significantly greater positive association between enjoyment and well-being for women than for men. Although Studies 1 and 2 both illuminate the significance of friendships in general well-being, the study of friendships remains limited by a lack of consensus around ways of measuring satisfaction with friends. Most existing friendship satisfaction scales have primarily assessed children, many are long and cumbersome, and none has exploited the most sophisticated available psychometric techniques for scale development (i.e., bi-factor modeling and item-response theory). Thus, there exists a critical need to develop an adult friendship satisfaction scale that can be widely adopted by close relationships' researchers. Study 3 of this dissertation pursued the development and psychometric validation of the unidimensional Adult Friendship Scale (AFS). The results of the first two studies and the outcome of the third study contribute to this area of research by highlighting the unique roles friendships play in well-being. They also offer a novel method by which researchers' can assess friendships to further the field's understanding of how friendships function as sources of joy, intimacy, fun, and connection in adult lives.

The purpose of this study is twofold: (1) to initialize a new conceptualization of positive feature based Friendship Quality (FQUA) scale on the basis of four dimensions: Closeness, Help, Acceptance, and Safety; and (2) to develop and validate FQUA scale in the form of reflective measurement model. The scale development and validation procedures suggested in literature were employed. A total of 480 Malaysian secondary school Form Four students sample was selected using Multistage Stratified Cluster Sampling. Data was analyzed using Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) techniques with the software of SPSS version 15.0. The reliability and construct validity were warranted with the parameter estimates lie within the acceptable range. The factor structure of FQUA scale showed its stability with the parameter estimates were found comparable in three different datasets. Approximately 62% of variance in FQUA was accounted for by Closeness, Help, Acceptance, and Safety. FQUA scale with 21 items measured was validated rigorously. Overall, this study has advanced a set of positive features of friendship in conceptualizing FQUA pertaining to the nature of reflective measurement where the positive features of friendship should be correlated with one and other. The validated FQUA scale deserves to be further explored to ensure its generalizability. An appendix is included. (Contains 9 tables and 1 figure.).
