What does it mean to be a moral person? And whose morality are we talking about?Does being moral actually make a difference in one's life? Does it affect the larger community? If so, what are the benefits and how are they manifest? Are moral principles intuitive, placed in us by the Creator? And does that make it easier to be moral? Does achieving virtue in any degree come as a result of following our conscience (and natural law) that permeate our universe? Are the tried-and-true universal virtues- a manual for living a happy and prosperous life? How do we cultivate morality and virtue in our lives? Are there objective principles of right and wrong? If so, what are they and where are they found? Is there anyone who can declare or confirm truth- with moral authority? Do they have credibility? The founders of the United States of America wanted to establish a free and lasting government. To determine what that would be, they examined the teachings of the great thinkers and writers of the ages. Did you know they even studied sacred scripture?.They discovered that freedom and liberty were only achieved when the people lived by moral and virtuous principles. History confirms that when any nation ceases to abide by natural law or virtue, they decline. Benjamin Franklin believed that, "Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom."How do you see America as a nation- today? How would you evaluate yourself personally (in terms of living by a moral code)?Natural law is essentially synonymous with virtue and morality. When we choose to pursue and live by these principles, in the best way possible, we will find real happiness and peace. The mission of this book is to help you personally discover or reclaim the "ageless" principles that this country was founded upon, and to live by them; learning for yourself that they truly bring a deeper meaning and satisfaction to your life.

ALL TRUE GRACE IS SUMMED UP IN CHARITY "but the greatest of these is charity." - 1 Corinthians 13:13 In these words we observe that something is spoken of as of special importance, and as peculiarly essential in Christians, which the apostle calls charity. And this charity, we find, is abundantly insisted on in the New Testament by Christ and His apostles-more insisted on, indeed, than any other virtue. But, then, the word "charity," as used in the New Testament, is of much more extensive signification than as it is used generally in common discourse. What persons very often mean by "charity," in their ordinary conversation, is a disposition to hope and think the best of others, and to put a good construction on their words and behavior. Sometimes the word is used for a disposition to give to the poor. But these things are only certain particular branches or fruits of that great virtue of charity which is so much insisted on throughout the New Testament. The word properly signifies love, or that disposition or affection whereby one is dear to another; and the original agape which is here translated "charity," might better have been rendered "love," for that is the proper English of it. So that by charity in the New Testament is meant the very same thing as Christian love. Though it be more frequently used for love to men, yet sometimes it is used to signify not only love to men, but love to God.

Jesuits Daniel Harrington and James Keenan have successfully team-taught the content of this landmark study to the delight of students for years. In this book they take the fruits of their own experiences as theologians, writers, teachers, mentors, and friends to propose virtue ethics as a bridge between the fields of New Testament Studies and Moral Theology. Answering the call of the Second Vatican Council for moral theology to "draw more fully on the teaching of Holy Scripture," the authors examine the virtues that both flow from Scripture and provide a lens by which to interpret Scripture. By remaining true to both the New Testament's emphasis on the human response to God's gracious activity in Jesus Christ and to the ethical needs and desires of Christians in the twenty-first century, the authors address key topics such as discipleship, the Sermon on the Mount, love, sin, politics, justice, sexuality, marriage, divorce, bioethics, and ecology. Covering the entire sweep of ethical teaching from its foundations in Scripture and especially in Jesus' life, death, and resurrection to its goal or "end" with the full coming of God's kingdom, the authors invite readers more deeply into an appreciation of the central biblical themes and how, based on the themes, Catholic Christian moral theology bears on general ethical issues in culture. Complete with reflection questions and suggestions for further reading, this book is essential reading for professors, students, pastors, preachers, and interested Catholics.
