In the year 1408, in the lands of Enabladoor, upon the sister planet to Earth-Solestia, the bloodied, massacred bodies of soldiers- both attackers and defenders- lay upon the grassy slope afoot the castle Magniforte. Our story begins almost 1400 years earlier upon the very same land upon the very same planet as unwittingly the inhabitants go about their daily lives. Descending from the coastal regions of the North, the nomadic hunting and gathering people known as the Axeons arrive for their once in a century hunt, for the giant Cent-terrapin turtle of Ocean’s Deep. The highly prized, dinosaur sized, mystical creatures come ashore to lay their eggs in the sand at night, on a full moon once every 100 years; providing only a very small window for the hunt. Following in their wake and in search of the Axeon boy Neptune and the Oceanic Trident of power, two recently pirated black galleons, one of which is carrying the tribal witch Absysiam, lurk ominously upon the horizon. Meanwhile inland a simple farming woman flees with her children from her burnt out home, following the savage revenge attack by ghosts of her past. And in the partially snow coveredReptilight Mountains to the North and the parched, sandy Great Desert to the East, men of the land hunt their prey for survival. It is at this time when a great star known as the Fulcrum Star from a circle of five of these glowing beacons, located in deep space and responsible for balancing the universe, is lost by the gods and arrives in a solidified state to the planet. In a dazzling show of both colourful light and incredible sound the fallen star separates into seven individual crystal pieces and crashes to the surface. The fall of the star causes a loss of equilibrium and “Balance is Disturbed” throughout the universe. With the balance disturbed the gods summon from the deepest recesses of the universe, a collective of forces both good and evil to temporarily maintain the balance until the crystals can be collected and the star restored. Using these powerful forces they create two beings, Lord Dark-sky, bringer of darkness and all that is evil, and Sir ZandicoreSolatore, the wizard of white light and kindness. With the arrival and disposition of the seven powerful crystals the ultimate fight between good and evil is set to be played out.

Origins and Principles of Clinical Biomechanics in Human Locomotion discusses key concepts of how biomechanics links to the development of pathology through mechanical laws, anatomy, physiology and health. It provides fundamental principles and practical data, and guidance of how to apply these in the clinical biomechanics field. Coverage includes: major joint movement, muscle action around joints, physiology and patho-physiology of bone, muscle and neurologic disorders. This reference is ideal for teaching students in biomechanics, orthopedics and physiotherapy. It should also be of interest to product development engineers, rehabilitation engineers, those working in prosthetics and orthotics, physiotherapists and occupational therapists. The authors explore the simple laws of motion as applied to anatomy and physiology, in order to help readers understand human pathology within the human lower limb and mobility. They then go on to look at materials science concerns within this field, such as engineering stresses and strains, principles and types of material properties and the shaping of structural properties. Readers will also find within this book information on tissue science, force generation, biological sciences, evolution in biomechanics, human gait, functional units of the lower limb and foot, and finally pathomechanical principles; all as applied to clinical biomechanics. Bridges the void between research biomechanics and clinically applied biomechanics Links human locomotive biomechanics to medicine, physiology and evolutionary anatomy and medicine Prepares students, bioengineers and clinicians for the reality of utilizing biomechanical principles in clinical practice, while informing researchers of the environment limits that most clinical biomechanics practice occurs in

In the second book in the Legion of Space series, Jay Kalam, Hal Samdu and Giles Habibula fight The Cometeers, an alien race of energy beings controlling a "comet" which is really a giant force field containing a swarm of planets populated by their slaves. The slave races are of flesh and blood, but none are remotely similar to humans. The Cometeers cannot be destroyed by AKKA, as they are incorporeal from the Universe's point of view and exist for the most part in an alternate reality. The ruling Cometeers feed on their slaves and literally absorb their souls, leaving disgusting, dying hulks in their wake. It is said that they do so, as they were once fleshly entities themselves of various species. Hence, the ruling Cometeers keep other intelligent beings as slaves and "cattle." They fear AKKA, though, as it can erase all their possessions.

"Aden B. Meinel and wife Marjorie P. Meinel stood at the confluence of several overarching technological developments of the 20th century: postwar aerial surveillance by spy planes and satellites, solar energy, the evolution of telescope design, interdisciplinary optics, and photonics. In 1945 he was a Navy Ensign ordered to find the secret tunnels in Nazi Germany where the V-2 rockets menacing Great Britain and Belgium were being manufactured. After receiving both his B.A. degree and Ph.D. in astronomy from the University of California at Berkeley within three years, Aden was invited to join the scientific staff at Yerkes Observatory/University of Chicago. While there he was selected by the National Science Foundation to manage the development of a new national observatory on Kitt Peak, Arizona, and served as its first Director. In the early 1960s he founded the Optical Sciences Center at the University of Arizona, which later metamorphosed into the College of Optical Sciences with the doctoral program in interdisciplinary optics. It was here that he also designed the first Multiple Mirror Telescope and with wife Marjorie pioneered the feasibility of solar energy power on a commercial scale. Aden's knowledge and expertise in optics made him invaluable in research on cameras for spy satellites and spy planes overflying the Soviet Union and Southeast Asia. After retirement the Meinels worked for NASA/JPL on the precursor of the James Webb Space Telescope and on the exoplanet program. They also served on the team that corrected spherical aberration in the Hubble Space Telescope"--

A graduate-level textbook on the astrophysics of binary star systems and their evolution Physics of Binary Star Evolution is an up-to-date textbook on the astrophysics and evolution of binary star systems. Theoretical astrophysicists Thomas Tauris and Edward van den Heuvel cover a wide range of phenomena and processes, including mass transfer and ejection, common envelopes, novae and supernovae, X-ray binaries, millisecond radio pulsars, and gravitational wave (GW) sources, and their links to stellar evolution. The authors walk through the observed properties and evolution of different types of binaries, with special emphasis on those containing compact objects (neutron stars, black holes, and white dwarfs). Attention is given to the formation mechanisms of GW sources—merging double neutron stars and black holes as well as ultra-compact GW binaries hosting white dwarfs—and to the progenitors of these sources and how they are observed with radio telescopes, X-ray satellites, and GW detectors (LIGO, Virgo, KAGRA, Einstein Telescope, Cosmic Explorer, and LISA). Supported by illustrations, equations, and exercises, Physics of Binary Star Evolution combines theory and observations to guide readers through the wonders of a field that will play a central role in modern astrophysics for decades to come. 465 equations, 47 tables, and 350+ figures More than 80 exercises (analytical, numerical, and computational) Over 2,500 extensive, up-to-date references

Causal Powers written by Jonathan D. Jacobs and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-04-05 with Philosophy categories.

Causal powers are ubiquitous. Electrons are negatively charged; they have the power to repel other electrons. Water is a solvent; it has the power to dissolve salt. We use concepts of causal powers and their relatives-dispositions, capacities, abilities, and so on-to describe the world around us, both in everyday life and in scientific practice. But what is it about the world that makes such descriptions apt? On one view, the neo-Humean view, there is nothing intrinsic about, say, negative charge, that makes its bearers have the power to repel other negatively charged particles. Rather, matters extrinsic to negative charge, the patterns and regularities in which negatively charged particles are embedded, fix the powers its bearers have. But on a different view, the anti-Humean view, causal powers are intrinsically powerful, bringing with them their own causal, nomic, and modal nature independent of extrinsic patterns and regularities-even fixing those patterns and regularities. This collection brings together new and important work by both emerging scholars and those who helped shape the field on the nature of causal powers, and the connections between causal powers and other phenomena within metaphysics, philosophy of science, and philosophy of mind. Contributors discuss how one who takes causal powers to be in some sense irreducible should think about laws of nature, scientific practice, causation, modality, space and time, persistence, and the metaphysics of mind.

At a moment of great discovery, one Big Idea can change the world... The greatest mathematician of his time, Archimedes transformed the development of early maths. But it is his revolutionary insights into mechanical science for which he is so revered, inventing the fulcrum and lever, pulley and water pump, among other technological advances that changed the course of history. Archimedes & the Fulcrum is a captivating and easily digestible investigation into the legendary life and work of the greatest mathematical mind the world had seen, up until his tragic death at the hands of the Romans. Single-handedly launching a 4,000 ton ship, calculating volumes and perfect spirals, laying the foundations of theoretical physics and inventing military weaponry as a seventy-year-old, Archimedes' Big Idea was so much more than his famed leap from his bath, shouting 'Eureka!' The Big Idea series is a fascinating look at the greatest advances in our scientific history, and at the men and women who made these fundamental breakthroughs.
