The Future of Adventism offers a stimulating introduction to the cutting edge of Seventh-day Adventist thought. Authored by leading scholars from multiple strands of the Adventist community, the essays that make up this collection are rooted in an understanding of Adventist history and the Christian heritage while simultaneously attuned to vital contemporary issues. Non-dogmatic and reflective, they are designed to prompt ongoing conversation about possible directions Adventist faith and life might take in the new millennium. "On the basis of this volume, the future of Seventh-day Adventist theology-rather than mere doctrine-looks bright indeed. As these theological thinkers make clear, Seventh-day Adventism has much to contribute to wider conversations on topics like eschatology, anthropology, the doctrine of God, and hope. This volume will serve as an essential touchstone for new generations of Seventh-day Adventist theological thinkers." -Linn Tonstad, Yale University "Based on an insightful re-reading of Adventist history and a careful description of current spiritual and existential trends, this collection delineates reasonable and meaningful potential horizons for Adventism. While remaining loyal to our church, these heterogeneous and complementary essays encourage an honest dialogue with the rest of God's world and welcome-with fidelity and clarity, realism and creativity-some pressing questions posed by that world as sources of opportunity for tomorrow." -Hanz Gutierrez, Adventist Theological School, Florence, Italy "On the 150th anniversary of their forbears' Great Disappointment in October 1844, a group of male Seventh-day Adventist scholars gathered at La Sierra University to present and discuss essays that predicted and prescribed the future of Adventist faith and practice in the context of its history. Twenty years later this volume makes those essays available to a wider public. Although a generation of change has significantly altered both Adventism and the world in which its believers live, the historical and theological trajectories mapped in this volume offer unique and revealing insights into the movement's shifting identities. Both insiders and outsiders seeking to understand contemporary Adventism will find much to ponder in this fine volume-both what it does and what it does not include." -Rennie B. Schoepflin, California State University, Los Angeles "This volume offers carefully-crafted lectures delivered by some of Adventism's best minds, presenting fascinating evidence that the tradition of affectionate self-critical examination continues in the Church. It supplies some important pieces in the puzzle of Adventist self-understanding, and so aids the community's maturing process. It poses the question which is crucial to the prospering of the Church in the future: Is the Adventist imagination alive and well?" -Michael Pearson, Newbold College "This book is exceptional. It will undoubtedly contribute to the future of Adventism as it is received with concern and assessed with sympathy. It examines crucial traditional and present positions with great care. That does not mean all problems are solved. The achievement is that they are here recognized and competently discussed. We have waited for this a very long time. It provides the needed opportunity for honest discussion, inviting participation in the renewal of Adventist theology." -Edward W. H. Vick, author of From Inspiration to Understanding and Philosophy for Believers

The New World Order--one of the climactic events in the Earth's end times. Correct? Not So! The New World Order--Part of Adventism? is where author Allen Roesch seeks to prove the invalidity of the New World Order doctrine. Divided into two parts, the author shows both sides of the New World Order issue. Part one shows how certain authors like Malachi Martin, Gary Kah, Don McAlvany, and Gary North live lives and hold beliefs contrary to those of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Part two studies the pages of the Spirit of Prophecy and the Bible to prove that the doctrine of the New World Order is not even mentioned in either one. If this doctrine is such a cornerstone of future history, wouldn't it be found in the inspired writings depicting the last days? God speaks through His church, and believing a doctrine that is not in harmony with the church or its writings is not safe. If God has any new light to communicate, he will let his chosen and beloved understand it without their going to have their minds enlightened by hearing those who are in darkness and error.--Early Writings 124. Part three--We as adventists should not be so caught up with the terminology The New World Order. Our Pioneers never even referred to it, so why should we?

Open theism has reached its adolescence. How did it get here? And where does it go from here? Since IVP's publication of The Openness of God in 1994, evangelical theology has grappled with the alternative vision of the doctrine of God that open theism offers. Responding to critics who claim that it proposes a truncated version of God that fails to account for Scripture and denies many of the traditional attributes of God, open theism's proponents contend that its view of God is not only biblically warranted but also more accurate—with a portrayal of God that emphasizes divine love for humanity and responsiveness to human free will. No matter what one's assessment, open theism inarguably has made a significant impact on recent theological discourse. Now, twenty-five years later, Richard Rice recounts in this volume the history of open theism from its antecedents and early developments to its more recent and varied expressions. He then considers different directions that open theism might continue to develop in relation to several primary doctrines of the Christian faith.

The first, second, and third Sunday Laws, the Little Time of Trouble, the Latter Rain, the Loud Cry, the Shaking, the Great Time of Trouble, the Time of Jacob's Trouble, the Seven Last Plagues. If someone asked you to explain what will happen during these periods of time, could you do so? As Seventh-day Adventists, we believe that we are living in the last days of earth's history, and many Christians are constructing end-times scenarios based on passages plucked out of context from the Bible and Spirit of Prophecy writings which creates confusion and error. This book presents the principle of allowing these precious resources to interpret themselves so that we can avoid being confused, and come to a true understanding of what lies ahead. As the end of time draws near, world legislation will make life impossible for Seventh-day Sabbath keepers, who will have to stand up for their faith as they battle the principalities and powers of darkness. The most important aspect of preparing for these Final Events is developing an ever-closer relationship with Jesus. As we spend time with our Lord on a daily basis, share our faith with others, and allow the Holy Spirit to work in our hearts and minds, we will endure the perilous time, and be prepared for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.

My book's objective is to describe the beliefs, practices, and ventures of the Adventist church that have had or still have a significant impact on my life. Looking back, I now have a better understanding why ancient Israel was repeatedly told to remember what God had done for them. For this reason, there will be much reminiscing, retelling of personal experiences, and evaluating church teachings and decisions, all in the endeavor to make sense of what has happened. That can only take place if we bathe our words and expressions in grace, love and understanding. The book endeavors to answer the underlying question: what do we mean when we use the term "church"? What are the primary reasons for its existence? When you ask Adventists such a question, we hope they answer with a reply that is inspiring and practical. In presenting my view of Adventism over the past seventy-five years, it's had a positive effect on my knowing and understanding Jesus-and I hope the same goes for you!
