Using the principle that extracting energy from the environment always involves some type of impact on the environment, The Future of Energy discusses the sources, technologies, and tradeoffs involved in meeting the world's energy needs. A historical, scientific, and technical background set the stage for discussions on a wide range of energy sources, including conventional fossil fuels like oil, gas, and coal, as well as emerging renewable sources like solar, wind, geothermal, and biofuels. Readers will learn that there are no truly "green" energy sources—all energy usage involves some tradeoffs—and will understand these tradeoffs and other issues involved in using each energy source. Each potential energy source includes discussions of tradeoffs in economics, environmental, and policy implications Examples and cases of implementing each technology are included throughout the book Technical discussions are supported with equations, graphs, and tables Includes discussions of carbon capture and sequestration as emerging technologies to manage carbon dioxide emissions

Future Energy will allow us to make reasonable, logical and correct decisions on our future energy as a result of two of the most serious problems that the civilized world has to face; the looming shortage of oil (which supplies most of our transport fuel) and the alarming rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide over the past 50 years (resulting from the burning of oil, gas and coal and the loss of forests) that threatens to change the world’s climate through global warming. Future Energy focuses on all the types of energy available to us, taking into account a future involving a reduction in oil and gas production and the rapidly increasing amount of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. It is unique in the genre of books of similar title in that each chapter has been written by a scientist or engineer who is an expert in his or her field. The book is divided into four sections: • Traditional Fossil Fuel and Nuclear Energy • Renewable Energy • Potentially Important New Types of Energy • New Aspects to Future Energy Usage Each chapter highlights the basic theory and implementation, scope, problems and costs associated with a particular type of energy. The traditional fuels are included because they will be with us for decades to come - but, we hope, in a cleaner form. The renewable energy types includes wind power, wave power, tidal energy, two forms of solar energy, bio-mass, hydroelectricity, geothermal and the hydrogen economy. Potentially important new types of energy include: pebble bed nuclear reactors, nuclear fusion, methane hydrates and recent developments in fuel cells and batteries. - Written by experts in the key future energy disciplines from around the globe - Details of all possible forms of energy that are and will be available globally in the next two decades - Puts each type of available energy into perspective with realistic, future options

The Future of Energy 2021 Edition - The guide to sustainability, renewable energy, climate change and the energy transition. The 'Future of Energy' is written to be accessible for anyone interested in learning more about energy. Substantially updated in 2021 to reflect the impact of Covid-19 on the world of energy, the book takes the reader through a future for energy generation, transportation, and utilisation. Concise and comprehensive, the book brings together discussion on energy and thoughts on the range of topics which form the fulcrum of the challenges ahead of us including climate change, hydrogen, heat, sustainability, and renewable energy. Written to spark ideas, discussion and debate the 'Future of Energy' engages the reader in the future challenges and opportunities of this hugely exciting and important field. Background There exists a huge range of information on the 'energy transition' with competing technologies and theories vying for supremacy. It is easy to fall into the trap of believing there is an easy answer or 'silver bullet' to the huge challenges we face. It is substantially more complicated with an inevitable patchwork of future technologies, rather than a single simple solution. There is no perfect answer to the challenges we face but most will in some way shape the way we use energy through the next decade and beyond. About the author John Armstrong is an engineer whose career has spanned the extremes of the energy industry - giving him a front-row seat on the energy roller-coaster. He began his career constructing oil refineries before moving to work across fossil and renewable electricity generation. John lives in Bath in the United Kingdom with his wife and two children. Reviews for the 'Future of Energy' books by John Armstrong Concise while being comprehensive. Thorough but with a bit of a personal perspective that makes it interesting. Realistic about the challenges but with a dose of optimism about what could be done. Well-informed but accessible. David Elmes, Professor, Warwick Business School, Sept 2020. I would highly recommend this book to anybody working within energy or interested in learning more about the movement towards clean energy. I'd been looking for a book like this for years but couldn't find anything that wasn't a chunky textbook. Amazon Review, August 2020 A very good guide to the challenges the energy industry faces today. I will be recommending it to all my team to get up to speed with the industry - incredibly accessible in how the ideas are laid out. Seb, Energy Conference Producer, May 2020 This should be mandatory reading for future undergraduates and graduates as part of our induction process. Darren, Senior Energy Manager, May 2020 The author manages to present a complex topic in an engaging and authoritative way. Andrew, May 2020

The anthology entitled, "The Future of Energy: Challenges, Perspectives, and Solutions" includes a wide range of topics related to the probable and also possible future developments of energy technologies. The collection of papers offers a series of unprecedented perspectives on energy science, unavailable elsewhere. The authors have considered developments in renewable energy, novel energy discoveries, environmental climate futures, possible technological advances, temporal distortion, and gravitational electromagnetism. Specific energy inventors reporting breakthrough results have also been showcased in individual chapters, including Searl, Manelas, Kozyrev, and Storms. The future of energy is presented with possible scenarios such as with microgrids, solar systems, fusion-fission reactors, smart cities, energy storage, electric vehicles, low energy nuclear reactors, electromagnetic devices, proton and electron conversion, theoretical antigravity, and time manipulation. Several interesting models have been considered to provoke and stretch the reader's imagination and awareness of the study of the future. This collection of works provides a broad range of conceptual understanding of energy conversion that is both conventional and unconventional. Each chapter includes a significant use of graphs and charts, as well as explanatory equations where necessary, with plenty of vital references and links to substantiate any new scientific concepts and assist further research. More than one new phenomena of electrical power production have been discovered and the results documented in detail within the pages of this anthology. While the time schedule and specific cause of global warming is detailed, the plan for advanced energy applications is also explored. The Future of Energy: Earth, Wind and Fire by the Editors of Scientific American Since the Industrial Revolution our civilization has depended on fossil fuels to generate energy – first it was coal; then petroleum. But there are two problems: the first is that petroleum isn't an infinite resource; and the second is that burning coal and oil puts billions of tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, trapping heat. Temperatures have risen by about 0.6 degrees Celsius over the last 100 years, which may not sound like much, but even that small increase is showing some large effects. For one, records have been set for the seasonal loss of arctic ice. If business as usual continues, we are looking at a world where sea levels will be high enough to submerge many coastal cities and extreme weather events like 2012's Hurricane Sandy are the new normal. In this eBook, The Future of Energy: Earth, Wind and Fire, we review the energy problem and analyze the options from the mundane to the far out, beginning in Section One with an overview of issues and solutions, including the comprehensive "A Path to Sustainable Energy by 2030" and "7 Radical Energy Solutions." As these authors show, a multitude of possibilities exist. Renewable energy is more than photovoltaic cells and wind turbines – though these are viable options – and subsequent sections look at various sources, including solar power, hydropower, geothermal power, nuclear power and yes, wind power. For example, Section 4's "Can Nuclear Power Compete" examines the possibilities for nuclear rebirth and Section 5's "Turning the Tide" and "Moving Parts" discuss how tides could power coastal cities. Meanwhile we need to power transportation, and Section 7 reviews the search for biofuels that do not negatively impact the environment. Of course, all technologies have drawbacks that must be addressed, and not every idea will succeed. That isn't the point. There's no choice but to change the way we power our lives. The question is how and when. The longer we wait, the more painful the transition will be.
