Along with the 2004 enlargement of the EU - where new countries with new external priorities and orientations have joined the EU - Europe's Foreign, Security, and Defense policy (CFSP/ESDP) has developed rapidly. In order to evaluate their possible influence on the future of CFSP and ESDP, experts from some of the new member states discuss their countries' commitment to the integration project of strengthening the EU's external role. The impression prevails that the newcomers favor a "pro-European Atlanticism" in order to meet European, as well as American, expectations. Furthermore, their major concerns in foreign policy are addressing Russia. Will these options weaken the EU's Foreign, Security, and Defense policy or rather lead to new chances and strength? This book examines these concerns and analyzes the present state of the European Union's capacities to act on the international stage.

The future of European foreign policy is of vital significance to the developing world order. The failure of US policy in Iraq has underscored the need for Europe to play a constructive global role. Nevertheless, divisions within Europe over the Iraq war and over the future development of the European Union have raised questions about the potential for an effective European foreign policy—whether organized through EU institutions or via individual member states. This book will consider why Europe should assume global responsibilities, how they will be organized institutionally, whether they will be adequate to address pressing regional and security concerns, and how they will reflect the foreign policy interests of Europe’s major powers. It is the intention of this book to cover both thematic and country-specific issues, ranging from Europe’s responsibility as a global actor and EU-NATO relations to the specific influence of Germany, France, Italy and the United Kingdom. The contributors come from across the European Union and represent a mix of established and rising scholars. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of European Integration.

In 2004, the European Union's Intergovernmental Conference finalized the historic process of enlarging the EU from fifteen to twenty-five members. This book is the most detailed and up-to-date account of the state of the European Union's biggest enlargement so far, and also considers its future prospects in several key areas. It explains why the ten applicant countries wanted to join the EU and how they succeeded after lengthy negotiations. Each chapter is a cutting-edge overview by a leading figure in the field and subjects covered include: * the enlargement-integration debate * the politics of the EU's new member states * the role of the European Convention * the political economy of an enlarged Europe * the challenges of developing common European foreign and security policy * the EU's relations with its neighbours * EU-American relations.

The book provides an overview of the efforts to develop a Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) for the European Union. It covers the attempts to create a European Defence Community in the 1950s, the establishment of the system of European Political Cooperation (EPC) in the 1970s and the renewed drive for a CFSP culminating in the treaties of Maastricht and Amsterdam. The book assesses the CFSP in operation, discusses the EU response to the Bosnia and Kosovo crises and offers some challenging proposals for the future development of the CFSP in light of the enlargement of the Union. This title is published in conjunction with UACES, the University Association for Contemporary European Studies. UACES web site can be found at www.uaces.org

The central aims of the book is to present, in the form of a collection of papers, a variety of views on NATO from member states “formerly known as new”, and to assess in this context the prospects for NATO enlargement. Therefore, the book consists of two parts. The main objective of the first part is to present how NATO is now perceived in Central and South-Eastern Europe. Papers collected here offer an opportunity to reflect on the impact of the enlargements starting from 1999 on NATO functioning and evolution, roles, tasks and capabilities. The issue of how accession has transformed accessioning states will also be discussed. Last but not least, the perspective of “new” members on NATO’s future will be presented. The authors of the articles in this part mainly come from those countries that joined the Alliance after the end of the Cold War. The second part is devoted strictly to the topic of enlargement. In this part we asked experts from NATO members (both “old” and “new”), potential candidates and other NATO partners (including Russia, Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Sweden, Finland etc.) how they view the future of NATO cooperation with external partners in Europe and the prospects for enlargement of the Alliance.

Managing Security In Europe written by Franco Algieri and has been published by Bertelsmann Foundation Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996 with Political Science categories.

In ten to fifteen years, the European Union could include as many as 25 to 30 member states. In view of such an enlarged Union, a definition of the essential interests regarding foreign and security policy is required, as well as a reform of the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP). Otherwise, the European Union will be unable to effectively tackle the increasing regional and global problems, and as a result of the Union's irresolution, the security of its member states may be impaired. Taking into account the enlargement of the EU with the inclusion of Finland, Austria, and Sweden, the contributors to this book examine the changes taking place in central and eastern Europe, the increasing importance of a broader definition of security, as well as various scenarios for the structure of Europe's security and defense policies. Proposals for future reform of the CFSP are also developed.

The first book to explore the EU's record as a global actor since the creation of the Common Foreign and Security Policy in 1993 within the context of the Treaty of Amsterdam and recent decisions relating to NATO and EU enlargement. The chapters focus on: * the interface between EU foreign and trade policies * the EU's relationship with European defence organizations * its behaviour within the OSCE and UN * the institutional consequences of the CFSP * case studies of EU policies towards Central and Eastern Europe and the Maghreb countries. The editors draw the findings together to assess whether the EU has been successful as a global actor and consider the question: can the EU become a more credible, reliable and unitary global actor?

This concise but wide-ranging work explores the major political, economic, and strategic challenges confronting the European Union in the context of a rapidly changing geopolitical environment.Steve Wood and Wolfgang Quaisser consider the actors and issues at the center of current developments in the integration process. Beginning with some basic conceptual questions - for example, what is Europe? - they focus on the Union's increasingly complex politics and economy. Their discussion ranges from political economy, to policy reform and institutional change, to the arena of international relations. They also address the more intangible factors of European identity and common political will.An intriguing set of possible future scenarios concludes the authors' up-to-date examination of the EU after enlargement.
