Excerpt from The Game of the Chesse So long as the only known method of printing from a raised surface was confined to the cutting each page on a block of wood, the labour of prepa ring to print was so tedious and slow, that this, the most skilful part of the whole operation, required the largest amount of the labour employed, and consequently that the whole of the process, and the power of practising it, were of necessity entrusted and taught to the whole of the persons employed; and it is too consistent with the selfishness of human nature for us to be sur prised that these men (probably mere labourers originally) should, when in possession of this valuable secret, and notwithstanding the oaths of secresy administered to them, desire to practise it in'a greater degree for their own benefit than by working for others. Nor did the introduction of moveable types, cut singly or in words on separate blocks, very greatly facilitate the process, or render the skilled labour required much less. "The Game of the Chesse" is a seminal work in the history of English printing, attributed to William Caxton and based on the writings of Jacobus de Cessolis and Jean de Vignay. This allegorical treatise uses the game of chess as a framework to explore medieval society, morality, and governance. Each chess piece represents a different social role, and the moves of the game illustrate the responsibilities and duties of each class. Caxton's edition, printed in 1474, was one of the first books printed in English, making it a landmark achievement in the development of English literature and printing. This edition offers readers a glimpse into the medieval worldview, reflecting the social structures and moral values of the time. "The Game of the Chesse" is not only a fascinating historical artifact but also a timeless exploration of human nature and the principles of just rule.
