When the United States officially entered World War I in 1917, it was woefully underprepared for chemical warfare, in which the British, French, and Germans had been engaged since 1915. In response, the U.S. Army created an entirely new branch: the Chemical Warfare Service. The army turned to trained chemists and engineers to lead the charge—and called on an array of others, including baseball players, to fill out the ranks. The Gas and Flame Men is the first full account of Major League ballplayers who served in the Chemical Warfare Service during World War I. Four players, two club executives, and a manager served in the small and hastily formed branch, six of them as gas officers. Remarkably, five of the seven—Christy Mathewson, Branch Rickey, Ty Cobb, George Sisler, and Eppa “Jeptha” Rixey—are now enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame at Cooperstown, New York. The son of a sixth Hall of Famer, player and manager Ned Hanlon, was a young officer killed in action in France with the First Gas Regiment. Prominent chemical soldiers also included veteran Major League catcher and future manager George “Gabby” Street and Boston Braves president and former Harvard football coach Percy D. Haughton. The Gas and Flame Men explores how these famous baseball men, along with an eclectic mix of polo players, collegiate baseball and football stars, professors, architects, and prominent social figures all came together in the Chemical Warfare Service. Jim Leeke examines their service and its long-term effects on their physical and mental health—and on Major League Baseball and the world of sports. The Gas and Flame Men also addresses historical inaccuracies and misperceptions surrounding Christy Mathewson’s early death from tuberculosis in 1925, long attributed to wartime gas exposure.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1918 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER IV The attack of December, 1915--The Allies' good training tells--The casualties analysed--The new element of surprise--Evidences of the use of phosgene--The incident of the bulb--Improved alarms--The Strombos sirens--Accidents to the horns--The Tear Gas Shell--Its chemical analysis--Combated by antigas goggles--Tommies scoff at Tear Gas.--The Germans make it formidable. The expected German gas attack was actually made on December 19, 1915, at about 5:15 A. M., just before "Stand to" in the morning, the venue being the north of the Ypres salient, from the canal bank at Boesinghe down to Wieltje, a distance of three miles. It was preceded by the appearance of parachute lights of an unusual kind and by a number of red rocket flares. Almost immediately afterward gas was smelt in the front trenches. In some cases a hissing sound made by the gas's leaving the cylinders was heard and was taken as a warning by the soldiers in the trenches. In other cases the noise seems to have been deadened by rifle fire. Taking it altogether, however, there was very little warning, as the wind was favourable and the gas traveled surprisingly quickly. There was absolutely no confusion, and the men put on their helmets at once and lined the parapets within a minute. Where the trenches were close together the men had some difficulty in getting on their helmets in time. This was particularly the case in listening posts where we had patrols out quite close to the German wire. In the support and reserve trenches the arrangements for spreading the warning were not so good as those in the front line, and a number of men were caught by the gas before they had their helmets on. Indeed in a number of cases, especially in batteries, the gas was smelt before the...

Excerpt from Gas and Flame in Modern Warfare The majority Of those in the front line were killed - some, let us hope, immediately, but most Of them slowly and horribly. It is not my intention to try to play upon feel ings, but those Of us who have seen men badly gassed can only think with horror Of a battlefield covered with such cases, over which the Germans subsequently advanced. The Canadians on the British left fared both better and worse than the French coloured troops. Only their left appears to have been in the main path Of the poison cloud, but there is little doubt that in the thickest part those who did not escape either to a flank or to the rear were killed on the field. Thousands Of those in the support trenches and reserve lines and in billets be hind the line were suffocated - many to die later in the field ambulances and casualty clearing stations. The First Gas Regiment was established as the result of an order of the War Department in 1917, requiring that each army have a gas and flame service, and requiring as part of it an offensive Gas Regiment. The Boston Transcript reported: "Like the celebrated Camouflage Battalion, it is being organized on the cable request of Lieutenant-General John J. Pershing for a body of men to do pioneer work in the front-line trenches in Flanders. The Germans violated all the laws of war and humanity with their introduction of searing flames and poison gases into the trenches of the Allies, and now American genius and patriotism are relied upon to beat the Hun at his own game."

The author of this book was a junior major in the Royal Engineers, stationed at the Depot in Chatham when war broke out. He went to France in October 1914 to 3 Base, Boulogne, but some three weeks later, 8th November, he was sent forward to 2nd Division where he took over 11 Fd Coy RE at Zillebeke. The C-in-C has therefore appointed Major Foulkes RE for this duty. He has no pretence to technical knowledge, as far as I know, and it is not considered that he need have very much. But he has had much experience at the front, and can explain generally what we need and how we can perhaps best use it. In this fashion did Charles Howard Foulkes, a complete novice in the science of chemical warfare, become GHQ's Gas Guru, responsible for the conduct of gas operations of the British Army in France and for planning, organising, raising and training what came to be known as the Special Brigade – part of the RE. He certainly didn't have much time to create a new unit and train it in a new aspect of warfare; the Battle of Loos, in which the British would first use gas, was only four months away. Volunteers with a knowledge of chemistry were sought among universities and colleges at home, as well as from the ranks of the BEF, with immediate promotion to corporal – chemist corporal. A suitable base was found at Helfaut, a village four or five miles due south of St Omer (where GHQ was located at the time), where it remained as the depot for the rest of the war. At first two Special Companies were formed but they had been increased to four by the time the Loos offensive opened on 25 September 1915. In 1916 the four companies were expanded into the ‘Special Brigade’ consisting of 16 ‘Cylinder’ companies, one ‘Projector’ company (flame thrower) and four ‘Mortar’ companies, some 6,000 officers and men. This organisation remained unchanged to the end of the war. All this is described in detail as are all the operations involving the use of gas, the various inventions such as the gas shell, the Stokes mortar and the flame projector as well as the new types of gases, especially the deadly phosgene which proved to be our main battle gas for the remainder of the war, and mustard gas. According to Foulkes the total British casualties due to gas amounted to 181,053 of which 6,109 were fatal – but of course many lingered on after the war till they succumbed to the effects of gas poisoning. He remarks that the true total of German gas casualties was unlikely to be made known; to my knowledge no figure has been published.
