Excerpt from The Genesis of a New England State (Connecticut) In the new interest which has sprung up of late years in the institutional history of the United States, it is a little strange that the territorial forms and features, the bodies, of the States themselves are usually left so far out of account. It may be that this neglect has come from their comparative constancy of outline. It is easy to trace most of the internal workings of the State to the town system or its equivalents, and to accept them as a purely natural outgrowth. But it is just as easy to see that the external outline of New York, Illinois, or Texas has, from a very early period, been much the same as at present, and to accept it as artificial, as imposed on the State spirit by some superior power. And it must be confessed that this distinction holds good as a general rule. Each of our States has had, throughout its history, a remarkable uniformity of feature. There is comparatively little of that breaking up and reuniting, that shooting out of a crystal here, or disappearance of a limb there, which gives the idea of natural growth in a French kingdom, while it makes it difficult to say just where the growth took permanent shape. Our States, we might almost say, came into the world full grown, like Minerva. Even the Massachusetts towns, the accepted exemplars of their class, found their Commonwealth boundaries waiting for them when they came into existence, and conformed to them. Excerpt from Early New England Schools The object of this book is not so much to furnish the author's opinions and conclusions, as to furnish the material from which the reader may form his own opinions and conclusions. With this in view, much is given directly from the old records, retaining the quaint phraseology and construction but modernizing the spelling for greater ease in reading. The order is that of the logical development of the schools through their various transition periods, with such excerpts from the laws as show the growth in legal power. The motive for the work lies in the following statement in Mr. George H. Martin's preface to his book, "The Evolution of the Massachusetts School System." He says, "This book is not a history..., for such a work the materials are ample and only await the approach of some one who has time and the inclination to use them." The curiosity aroused by that statement led to the first record, that to the second, until curiosity became a disease. However, this is not a history, but rather the materials out of which history may be made. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A History of Connecticut: Its People and Institutions; With 100 Illustrations and Maps Guinea; examine afresh the evolution of town and colonial government; the working of Charles ii's liberal charter; the development of courts, schools, colleges, taxation, insurance, temperance, music, art, literature, industries, penal and reformatory methods, philanthropies and religious freedom; how slavery grew, waned and ceased; mines were Opened, inventions multiplied, looms worked and brickyards poured forth their treasure; how tobacco fields, market gardens, orchards, factories, Yankee notions and tin-peddlers flourished. In touching so many interests, adventurous were the daring that should expect to include in one volume all that deserves saying, and with infallible accuracy, but in this endeavor to describe the place and influence of Connecticut in the onward movement of the country, the author believes that the work invites to an instructive and interesting excursion into a vital and inspiring field.
