What can the great crises of the past teach us about contemporary revolutions? Arguing from an exciting and original perspective, Goldstone suggests that great revolutions were the product of 'ecological crises' that occurred when inflexible political, economic, and social institutions were overwhelmed by the cumulative pressure of population growth on limited available resources. Moreover, he contends that the causes of the great revolutions of Europe—the English and French revolutions—were similar to those of the great rebellions of Asia, which shattered dynasties in Ottoman Turkey, China, and Japan. The author observes that revolutions and rebellions have more often produced a crushing state orthodoxy than liberal institutions, leading to the conclusion that perhaps it is vain to expect revolution to bring democracy and economic progress. Instead, contends Goldstone, the path to these goals must begin with respect for individual liberty rather than authoritarian movements of 'national liberation.' Arguing that the threat of revolution is still with us, Goldstone urges us to heed the lessons of the past. He sees in the United States a repetition of the behavior patterns that have led to internal decay and international decline in the past, a situation calling for new leadership and careful attention to the balance between our consumption and our resources. Meticulously researched, forcefully argued, and strikingly original, Revolutions and Rebellions in the Early Modern World is a tour de force by a brilliant young scholar. It is a book that will surely engender much discussion and debate.

In the face of oppression and injustice, revolution emerges as the ultimate act of defiance, a catalyst for profound social change. This book delves into the complex and multifaceted world of revolutions, examining the factors that give rise to revolutionary movements, the strategies and tactics employed by revolutionaries, and the potential rewards and risks of revolutionary struggle. Drawing upon historical examples and contemporary case studies, this book provides a comprehensive overview of revolutions throughout history, from the French Revolution to the American Revolution, from the Russian Revolution to the Chinese Revolution. It explores the role of ideology, leadership, and mass mobilization in shaping the course of revolutions, and it considers the ethical dimensions of revolutionary violence and the challenges of building a just and sustainable society in the aftermath of revolution. This book is not merely a historical account of past revolutions; it is also a call to action, an invitation to reflect on the role of revolution in the face of ongoing injustice and oppression. It argues that the revolutionary spirit continues to burn brightly in the hearts of those who yearn for freedom, equality, and social justice, and it challenges readers to consider their own responsibility in the struggle for a better world. With its thought-provoking insights and engaging narrative, this book is essential reading for anyone interested in social change, political movements, and the human capacity for transformation. It is a timely reminder that the fight for a just and equitable world is an ongoing process, and that the revolutionary spirit is an enduring force for progress. Whenever leadership emerges within a group, there will be resistance to that leadership. Discontent may manifest in a number of ways, and action will always be determined by factors such as resource, numbers, time, space, and the legitimacy of the resistance. What, then, turns discontent into mutiny? Mutiny is often associated with the occasional mis-leadership of the masses by politically inspired hotheads, or a spontaneous and unusually romantic gesture of defiance against a uniquely overbearing military superior. In reality it is seldom either and usually has far more mundane origins, not in the absolute poverty of the subordinates but in the relative poverty of the relationships between leaders and the led in a military situation. The roots of mutiny lie in the leadership skills of a small number of leaders, and what transforms that into a constructive dialogue, or a catastrophic disaster, depends on how the leaders of both sides mobilise their supporters and their networks. Using contemporary leadership theory to cast a critical light on an array of mutinies throughout history, this book suggests we consider mutiny as a permanent possibility that is further encouraged or discouraged in some contexts. From mutinies in ancient Roman and Greek armies to those that toppled the German and Russian states and forced governments to face their own disastrous policies and changed them forever, this book covers an array of cases across land, sea, and air that still pose a threat to military establishments today. The critical theoretical line also puts into sharp relief the assumption that oftentimes people have little choice in how they respond to circumstances not of their own making. If mutineers could choose to resist what they saw as tyranny, then so can we.

Joseph Esherick reconstructs the early history of the Boxers, challenging the traditional view that they grew from earlier anti-dynastic sects, and stressing instead the impact of social ecology and popular culture.

Deluxe A4 Edition of this new version of the whole story of the Bounty, covers everything, from its disastrous crew selection, the Mutiny, incitement of Polynesian wars, trials, executions, pardons, kidnaps, rapes, enslavement to the brutal island murders. Make no mistake; it may have been the beginning of the Romantic Age but there was nothing romantic about the mutiny on the Bounty, why did Fletcher Christian choose oblivion over common sense on that hot sunny morning so long ago? Was it because far from freeing the crew from oppression he was actually mentally unstable? Where exactly was Peter Heywood and why did half the crew choose certain death in an open boat rather than sail away with the mutineers? Just some of the questions answered in this book, for the first time the whole story, the complete story, including the Pandora's hunt for the mutineers and the Admiralty's revenge, and the true price of Peter Heywood's freedom.

All people deal with intrusive thoughts at times. All of us have some practices in our lives we are not proud of. Many would call these struggles sins. Why are there thoughts and deeds we hate, yet that recur so often in our lives? The Bible teaches there is a real, supernatural source behind these thoughts and deeds. Satan is real but so is God. God’s word has all the truth and power we need to set us free from the influence of sin and Satan. Satan will use the events of our personal lives to convince us that lies are true. He is very convincing. He will lie to us about God, about ourselves, about the gospel, and about all of life. He roots his lies in enough truth to make them very believable. Discerning them is not always easy. Satan is very crafty, shrewd, and subtle. God’s word and Spirit are able to give us all that we need to take each sinful thought captive. Further, God supplies the truth that must replace Satan’s lies. God’s truth is the foundation for a holy life. God’s truth is the pure substance we need to replace the roots of our sinful practices.
